It's difficult to explain how it feels being in the close, it'll make you shiver. Very informative, however explained simply and mildly but I guess it's a family friendly activity. It's such an interesting part of Edinburgh's history, I would definitely recommend it!

Had this recommended to me for my Edinburgh trip and I wasn't disappointed! The tour was great and really informative! Our tour guide was Victoria who was great! If you are claustrophobic however I wouldn't suggest this as it is quite cramped.

Our tour guide Katie was excellent. Very informative and knowledgeable. As well as being friendly and humorous. Had my son and his friend both 13 years who throughly enjoyed it. Well worth a visit!

A tour on foot down the old narrow streets of Edinburgh from 16th and 17th century. A well-organised tour with a good guide and plenty of interesting information. It should be said though that the history we learn about is sometimes rather gruesome; I lost my appetite when taking the tour.

Very interesting tour through some of the underground streets of Edinburgh. The tour guide Rachel B was amazing and really funny telling the facts of the history. Highly recommended.

I went on this tour YEARS ago and then again recently. It has changed a lot! The first time I went on this tour, you had to walk into the back of a building, then down a ton of steps just to get in. Now they have costumed guides and great visual effects, while still allowing you to soak up... More

An excellent adventure into how we used to live. It's a bit difficult to imagine the rooms being in a street but it becomes clearer when you see mary kings close.

The tour gave a good picture of what daily life was like in medieval Edinburgh including during the plague. Since the town was built above the earlier houses, everything is now underground, which makes it a bit difficult to imagine what it looked like earlier. Also because it was underground it was quite musty and it began to affect my... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
