The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, Modern Two has a detailed recreation of Eduardo Paolozzi's studio on permanent display, as well as his 7.3m tall sculpture, Vulcan, that dominates the cafe where you can enjoy our delicious lunches, cakes and coffee while taking in this stunning work. The area
Address
Neighborhood: Stockbridge & Dean Village
Just downhill of New Town and attractively straddling a river near the elegant Royal Botanic Garden, it’s small wonder that Stockbridge became one of the city’s first hip neighborhoods. It’s now one of Edinburgh’s most desirable, though many bohemian touches have fallen away as its residents have matured and the area has gentrified. Some second-hand shops cling on, but mostly residents display refined tastes in basement bistros, gastropubs, coffee and antique shops, boutiques and delis and at the Sunday farmers' market. A pleasant ten-minute walk away, along a leafy riverside path beside the gurgling Water of Leith, lies Dean Village. This sleepy neighborhood of medieval half-timbered houses still retains much of the village feel it had when watermills plied their trade here. Beyond, the wooded riverside path feels even more remote as it climbs to the sculpture gardens of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

Relaxing view of talent
May 2021
With COVID you need to book a slot, but I am getting used to doing this. We are here today to see the Ray Harryhausen exhibition. It in this tally until 22 June 2021.

The amount of displays, film and models that they have is amazing.

After the gallery, there is a walk along a section of the Water of Leith.

Harryhausen!
May 2021
Visited the Ray Harryhausen exhibition. Firstly for the anxious.. they have all the required processes in place regarding Covid. Staff really efficient and courteous.
As to the exhibition itself, fantastic! The life story, early work and later success of the great man are displayed beautifully. Wonderful to see the actual models of those iconic creatures that were a massive part of my younger days.
If you are a fan (or not ) you must go.

JOAN EARDLEY 100 YEARS ON.
May 2021
Went to see Joan Eardley exhibition , 100years after she was born , good to see her paintings close up ,so vibrant , disappointed not to see her child paintings ,

But I see there are many other cities showing her work.

A very under rated Artist.

Fantastic experience
May 2021 • Solo
I visited this wonderful gallery after a friend's proposal to watch the Ray Harryhausen exhibition and it was totally worth it. The majority of artifacts are awakening memories from the back of your brain, from old films you 've definitely watched, but you hardly remember. The staff was adhering fully to all Covid protection protocols and I will pinpoint Palmeta's assistance to offer a great tour. Many thanks!

It’s now endemic in Scotland

No, not COVID rather the obsession with race and colonial guilt. You might think you could avoid it with an exhibition about the great Ray Harryhausen(Jason and the Argonauts etc) - wrong.

Mostly good & as expected
Dec 2020 • Friends
Visited here today for lunch with a friend. Could not fault food or service. This would have been a 5 star review if we had not encountered one female member of staff who would not let us stand in the corridor for a few moments. Her manner was not the friendliest & although I appreciate the Covid restrictions there was no one else in the corridor & we were wearing our masks. So a lovely lunch ended by us feeling like we were being rushed off the premises and out into the torrential rain & cold afternoon. I m sure it wasn't personal but there are nicer ways to talk to customers. Yours sincerely, an Edinburgh resident.

Both galleries are high quality and the Paula Rego exhibition is fascinating. Walk to/from it via the Water of Leith.

The 2 Galleries of Modern Art are a spectacular combination
Mar 2020
On either side of Belford Road across the Water of Leith from Edinburgh's Georgian classical "New Town" the twin galleries are worth a lengthy visit. In Gallery One at present, until May, there is the most amazingly thought provoking exhibition including work by Scottish Artist, Katie Paterson, on the themes of Time and Light. The 100 Year book project, the Moonlight Sonata bounced from the surface of the moon and the lunar eclipse mirrorball are all spectacular. Then across the road is Gallery 2, with a permanent exhibition of Edinburgh born Eduardo Paolozzi, pop art sculptor, as well as a temporary exhibition by Paula Rego with video autobiography containing interviews about her productive and provocative life.
All this is FREE! but you are requested to donate at least £5 pp. well worth it.

Hi Ron, thank you for the wonderful review! We're so pleased to hear you enjoyed your visit. All our permanent collection and some exhibitions are free, though just to note Paula Rego is a ticketed exhibition. Thank you very much for the donation and we hope to welcome you back again in the future. Best wishes, National Galleries of Scotland

Brilliant Paula Rego exhibition
Feb 2020
The Paula Rego retrospective exhibition runs until April 2020 - it's outstanding. Good to watch the video in room 6 - quite long but a great overview of the life and work of a fascinating artist.

Excellent light lunch
Oct 2019 • Couples
Visited the gallery again, as we always do when we come to Edinburgh. This time we had lunch too downstairs in the very popular and busy restaurant/cafe area. I had a two salad option for £6, excellent value: one was a new potato and aubergine dish and the other was a harissa squash dish. Both were well spiced and dressed to make them even more interesting. We also had a baked potato with butter, cheese and salad. Free tap water to drink. Plenty of other options including a couple of hot meals and a soup of the day. Cakes and coffees also available. Self-service cafe set-up. All good. Recommended.
