Commonly known as the Falkirk wheel, this is an amazing piece of Engineering, alowing a boat to take the "elevator" and to join in minute the upper part of the channel. The boat tour will equally take you through a water tunnel...captivating experience!

We rented a Green Sandpiper from ABC boat hire with two bedrooms and two baths - very spacious and cosy. After a short intro at Falkirk, we set off. They help you up the first locks and onto the wheel - the view and surreal experience of being lifted while still in water is quite something! We'd never canal boated before, so I'd chosen the route towards Edinburgh because once you're past the lock after the wheel (3 locks in total from the pier at Falkirk), there are no more locks to worry about before coming back down a few days later. We followed the advice on what pubs to stop and eat at generously provided during check-inn at Falkirk, and were very happy with them all. We turned around before we ever reached Edinburg, so that we wouldn't have to stress about making it back in time for check-out. Only suggestion we'd make is to head back to the dock on the last night, not to stay overnight down by the turning point - the area seems a bit dodgy and I'm not convinced we'd have spent the night alone if we'd anchored up there. We thoroughly enjoyed our canal boating experience and would recommend it to anyone able to enjoy a slow-paced holiday adventure :)

A bit off the beaten path, the park established around the Falkirk Wheel provides excitement for the whole family. Created as part of the millenium project it contributes to awaking the Scottish Waterways to new life - and what a life it is! Get lifted into the air in a giant boatlift that utilizes gravity and takes you into a tunnel beneath the Antonine Wall (and the motorway, and the railway...) Or just enjoy plenty of water-based activities...

Great place for adults and kids alike. You can just sit and relax and watch the amazing boat lift or pay to experience it first hand.
