Address
Neighborhood: Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.

Giving The Meadows four stars in part because I know they can't go out of business by my knocking off that coveted 5th but really blades of glass, bluebells, twigs don't have to worry all that much about such stuff. The Meadows are this great green swath like a rug over Edinburgh's nobbly nursing home knees. Ideal to jog around, to listen to music while your walking back from, say, Wee Red Bar or a Zulawski retrospective at the Filmhouse or the latest Linklater film at the Cameo. Ideal for calling an emergency picnic with miniature prosecco bottles in the summer or kicking stray balls back to those passing round in funny circles in jobs strips. Perfect for students throwing frisbys. The Meadows is a perfect gauge of the weather and as soon as it's sunny they get infected by wee Lego figures on a subuteo pitch. But I also like The Meadows in winter when it's misty and mysterious.

meadows is a lovely place to visit but be aware that it is also a dangerous place to be late at night.

My Miniature Poodle and I stayed for a week at a nearby hotel. This was a great place to walk her, a huge expanse of grass and trees.

It's basically in a residential neighborhood and visited by locals for morning and evening walks. Great place to be there just too wind down with a coffee. Nice views of the Meadows and the adjoining park. Not a compulsory visit but do try if possible.

A place, where people come to grill, picnic or walk their dogs. Visit it if you want to escape the overcrowded center for a while and enjoy a sunny day on the green lawn.

I was walking from the Summerhall to King George IV St and had the choice of going via The Meadows, or to go along the road - not a big difference in distance so I opted for the green route. It was a very sunny late afternoon so the children were out in the playground and in the fields. As this park is near Edinburgh university, there were plenty of students about, there were buskers and it was enjoyable to walk through the park.
