The area
Neighborhood: Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

Great room for small events
Nov 2021
Ran a small event in their upstairs room last night. Really nice people who put effort in to make it good for us. Great space for maybe 30 to 50 people tops. People were lovely, the beer was good.

More establishments should be like the Outhouse!!

The Outhouse is a fabulous bar and I am especially happy to hear that it doesn't put up with narrow minded ant trans people! Well done to them. More establishments should be like the Outhouse!!

Avoid unless you enjoy sexual harassment
Aug 2021
Avoid. There are better and more welcoming places in the area to drink from. The clientele are mostly comprised of overly sexualised drunken gay males who behave inappropriately towards other men, particularly any straight men in your crowd. Their attitude is so prehistoric towards men that the chants of 'he's just one more pint away from letting me suck his d*ck' resound around the room. Disgraceful. Should be shut down. No place for sexual assault being normalised in public settings. But that's the gay scene for you these days. No 'pride' in that at all. The Outhouse are complicit in the sexual harassment of their patrons.

Great pub - Friendly and Welcoming
Sep 2021
Excellent venue who always go above and beyond for customers. I have visited with friends and my wife and always been treated with kindness and welcomed.

Great choice of beers and cocktails. Decent wine list and always a smile on the face of staff. Friendly and welcoming venue.

If I’m ever in that side of the City I always try and pop in for a drink.

Nasty manager, nasty venue
Sep 2021 • Friends
Disgraceful and horrible, was treated like dirt. I had a booking and was turned away just because of my beliefs on Life, Marriage and Family if this was the other way around the police and media would have been there.
Treated worst then a terrorist - that's how i felt.

It's a venue that no one should support, much better places to enjoy in Edinburgh that does not discriminate or disappoint and shows what true love is.

Professional or friend?
Jun 2021 • Couples
Visit this place regularly. Nice setting and drinks ok and decent value. Cut short visit on last occasion due to a loud and drunk young lady who spoiled the atmosphere. Seemed to be known to staff cos the question is do you tolerate drunkenness to friends about e quality of service to others?

Big ups Spence
May 2021
Big up Spence! Had a great time, raspberry daiquiris and good vibes flowing. Blankets provided to combat the classic British weather but nothing can bring us down. Cheers!

A lovely setting for outdoor drinks but unfortunately the staff service left a lot to be desired and I will not be returning anytime soon
