- Pip’s ToursAylesbury, United Kingdom279 contributionsAMAZINGWe visited here a day earlier than expected due to the weather. We asked if it was Ok to visit. Linda on arrivals was very welcoming and very helpful. EVERYONE we met during our visit were the most polite, courteous and helpful they could have been, (Even a member of staff walking past in uniform not in position asked if we were enjoying the tour). I have been to many countries and on many trips but I have never encountered a place where all the staff were so pleasant. The Royal Yacht Britannia should open a school teaching others how to treat guests. I booked this for my wife who is very interested in all things Royal but I will admit with the informative audio guide and wonderful display (especially the engine room) was very impressive and I thoroughly recommend this. You will love it. Thank you everyone. What a lovely review! We are thrilled to learn that you had such an amazing experience on board Britannia, and that you found the tour to be so informative. Linda and the rest of our dedicated staff will be delighted to read your kind words as they work hard to ensure that every visitor’s tour of Britannia is extra special. Thank you for visiting Britannia and for recommending the tour to others.Written January 13, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten January 11, 2020
- EliseBerlin, Germany56 contributionsUnique and Cool! Our group purchased the Royal Edinburgh Ticket (57£) which included the Royal Yacht Britannia. This was my first time to the UK, so it was very interesting to see an attraction that provided lots of history and insight in a very specific aspect of the Royal Family's lives. My partner really enjoyed this attraction and the audio guide was complimentary, so that was great! Plan to spend about 2-2.5 hours here if you follow the audio guide from start to finish. Another cool thing about this attraction is that it's located next to the harbor and in a mall, so there are lots of places to eat amazing seafood before or after your tour. Many thanks for visiting. What a lovely review! We are delighted that you enjoyed your tour as part of the Royal Edinburgh ticket. It really is a wonderful way to sightsee en route to Britannia with 48 hours on the tour buses, as well as tickets to Edinburgh Castle, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and The Royal Yacht Britannia. As you say, a tour of the Royal Yacht offers a fascinating insight into the lives of the Royal Family.Written February 3, 2020This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2020Written February 1, 2020
- tanner159Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom453 contributionsRoyal Birthday treatAs a royalist what better way to spend my birthday then on Royal Yacht Britannia. Easy to get to from our hotel in Edinburgh. Yes there are some road works in front of the ocean terminal building but regeneration will in the long term being more tourists to Leith I’m sure and once into the terminal building shopping mall you have a good opportunity to wander out onto the boardwalk for your first view of her. Wow she didn’t disappoint and it brought tears to my eyes. Excellent customer service at both the ticket desk ( pre booked) and the audio tour collection point. You enter a small museum area before boarding the yacht via steps or lift starting on the fourth deck working downwards from the wheelhouse to the engine room with the private and royal quarters and sun terrace in between. Audio tour was free as part of the ticket and we’d highly recommend you take this option and it’s narrated by Mark Bonnar who has an amazing voice. Each deck has so much history but for me there were two highlights that stood out for me. The first was seeing every clock stopped at 15:01 as I so clearly remember watching her Majesty the Queen shed a tear when the yacht was decommissioned after she disembarked at precisely that time and secondly and most poignantly for was walking the same deck that Diana was famously photographed rushing to her sons with her arms flung out to embrace the princes. So much history so many memories shared aboard this living museum. After a couple of hours of wandering the four decks and outside areas we headed to the famous tearoom. Despite not being able to pre book tables our arrival was impeccable timing as we were given table 1 by the window which afforded us fabulous views. As it was my birthday we indulged in a Moët Chandon cream tea for two. Sandwiches (cream cheese with smoked salmon & chicken and bacon) were exquisite as was the warmed fudge cake and fruit scones. Even the little touches like the firework topping on the cappuccino sums up the excellent attention to detail as it was Nov 5th. Biggest shout out goes to Gayle who I believe might be a senior staff member. She went over and beyond to make my birthday trip to the tearoom and yacht a memorable experience. I will treasure the small gift always. Thank you From the moment we took the escalator up the floors in the ocean terminal mall to my final glance of Britannia as we walked away from the port it felt like I was a little part of royal history. Its was definitely the highlight of our four day trip to Edinburgh. Great value and if we lived closer would be making use of the free annual pass upgrade. Worth every penny. Can’t recommend it enough you won’t be disappointed. What a lovely review! We are thrilled to learn that you had such a wonderful experience aboard Britannia, exploring the five decks, and learning about the Yacht’s impressive history acquired over 44 years of Royal service. Indeed, local buses 11, 22 and 35 travel to Ocean Terminal where Britannia is permanently berthed. As you mention, Britannia has a new audio guide, available through a handset or on your mobile phone and narrated by award-winning Scottish actor Mark Bonnar (Shetland and Line of Duty). A visit to our Royal Deck Tea Room for our Moët Cream Tea Special is the perfect way to complete your tour and enjoy the beautiful views out across the Firth of Forth. Gayle and the rest of our dedicated staff will be delighted to read your kind words as they work hard to ensure that every visitor’s tour of Britannia is extra special. - Julie6 contributionsWalking in the Queen's footsteps!Went with my dad who has limited mobility. All of the staff without exception were super with him, very friendly and welcoming but also very patient. We were offered the use of a wheelchair whilst we toured the yacht and it was so easy to get round the yacht in a wheelchair - one of the best places to cater with disabled that I have been to It was fascinating to see how the Queen used to travel as well as all the staff with her. And was different to just going round a stately home. The audio guide was also a great idea as meant my dad could listen to everything, whereas when its all written down, he struggles to read everything There was also a fun "find the corgi" trail for children The tea room is pricey, but then how often can you say you've had tea and scones where the Queen has also dined! If you're in Edinburgh can only recommend you visit - especially on a February day! What a lovely review! We are pleased to learn that you enjoyed exploring Britannia’s five decks and learning about life on board for the Royal Family and dedicated crew. As you mention, the Royal Yacht is a highly accessible visitor attraction with lifts and ramps between each of the decks and an accessible tour route, for wheelchairs of up to 67cm width. Indeed, the tour is self-guided using our complimentary audio handset, allowing visitors to explore Britannia at their own leisure, whilst learning about the Royal Yacht’s unique history. We are pleased to learn that our cuddly corgi treasure hunt proved to be such a hit – we hope you managed to spot them all! A visit to our Royal Deck Tea Room is certainly a perfect way to complete your tour and take in the stunning waterfront views. - Jill DLondon, United Kingdom116 contributionsA wonderful place to visit - Royal Yacht BritanniaAn absolute highlight of our visit to Edinburgh was taking a bus to Leith to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia! What a stunning place to visit, the whole tour is perfect with excellent commentary. Allow at least 2-3 hours hours to get the most out of your visit as there is so much history to absorb and it would be a shame to rush through. The views are absolutely stunning from the decks. We would also recommend afternoon tea in the restaurant either during or once you have finished, service is friendly and welcoming whilst being professional. We would definitely visit again, as this is a wonderful place to visit. Highly recommended. We are delighted to learn that you had such a wonderful tour of Britannia, and that you found it to be a highlight of your visit to Edinburgh! As you mention, the tour is self-guided using our complimentary audio guide, allowing visitors to explore the five decks at their own pace, whilst learning about Britannia’s unique history. A visit to our Royal Deck Tea Room is indeed a wonderful addition to your tour and the views out across the Firth of Forth are certainly stunning. We hope that you will apply for an Annual Pass, included in your admission cost, as this allows each visitor to return, free of charge for up to a year. If you liked Britannia, you’ll love our sister ship, Fingal, Scotland’s only luxury floating hotel, where you can enjoy an overnight stay or a decadent Afternoon Tea, Evening Supper or Cocktails. The tour starts by going through the museum and onto the top deck . You can get an audio handset or download it onto your phone. It was fascinating and informative , seeing all aspects of life on board from the crew to the royal Family. We absolutely loved it Also liked the Royal Tea rooms where we had Scones and Tea - delscious . We would thoroughly recommend if you are in Edinburgh , buses go to the ocean Terminal for the tour.Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia and for providing such a great review. As you say, our audio guides give a wonderful insight into what life was like on board for the Royal Family and those who served on board as Royal Yachtsmen. The freshly baked scones in the Royal Deck Tea Room are indeed delicious. - LlandelyAberystwyth, United Kingdom157 contributionsWhat a corkerVery well organised and maintained tourist attraction. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice touch of humour with comical placement of toy corgis in most rooms (especially the sick bay). Included in admission price were handsets with very informative audio guide which was very good and top marks for having Welsh as an option. Very interesting and informative visit with plenty to see. We were lucky that it was quiet so could wander without crowds . Not suitable in bad weather as decks are obviously open . Spent couple of hours easily. Finished trip with lovely lunch of sandwiches and soup or sandwiches and scones. Very pleasant and enjoyable. We are delighted to learn that you had such an interesting and informative visit to Britannia. Our dedicated staff will be delighted to read your kind words, as they work hard to ensure that every visitor’s tour of Britannia is extra special. We hope you managed to spot all of our cuddly corgis who are hiding around the ship for our Cuddly Corgi Treasure Hunt! As you say, the tour is self-guided using our free audio handset, available in a choice of 30 languages. For the information of others, we are an all-weather attraction with the majority of the tour being inside the ship. - Lizzie J2 contributionsOk visit but disappointedThe yacht itself was beautiful, the rooms were lovely and stunning to see. Upon entry you have a walkthrough and see photos and printed information on the walls. At the end of this, you are advised that you will be given what looks like a phone to listen to the information provided in different languages and there are signs posted advising which number you need to press to listen to the relevant information. About half way through the walk through of the yacht, there are signs for the Tea Rooms and there is a short wait depending on the time of day on your visit. The menu is not large but is very nice and I highly recommend the potato wedges. It isn't cheap as we had soup/sandwich, cake and a drink and it worked out about £35 for 2 people. The downside of this was that I am hard of hearing and could not listen to the information provided on the 'telephones'. I asked if there were sign posted information inside the yacht or any other type of information available and was told no. It would have been helpful if I could have been given a leaflet to read about each area so that I could fully enjoy the visit as I felt I was missing out on information given to other tourists...Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are pleased that you found Britannia stunning to see. As you kindly mention, our complimentary audio guided tour allows you to explore Britannia’s five decks at your own pace. The tour can be listened to on our audio handset which works with the T-loop system, or personal mobile phone, on both of which the volume can be controlled. The self-led tour allows you to learn about life on board, whilst taking in as much or as little of the tour as you wish. We do apologise that you were not offered another version as we do have a printed version of the script, as well as tablets available with the Britannia tour in British and American Sign Language. We will of course pass your feedback regarding the audio tour onto our Visitor Experience Manager, as we are always keen to make improvements where possible. We hope to welcome you back aboard to fully experience all five decks with your free Annual Pass. For the information of others, admission to Britannia is less than other top Edinburgh attractions and includes an Annual Pass, which allows each visitor to return free of charge, for up to a year. Britannia has been named as the UK’s Best Visitor Attraction 2020 by Which? Magazine, and has retained its Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Best of the Best Award for the 9th consecutive year, making us one of the Top 1% in the World.Written June 8, 2022This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2022Traveled with familyWritten June 3, 2022
- JK4226Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom25 contributionsDefinitely worth a visitWe really enjoyed this. To be honest, I wasn’t that bothered about going but it turned out to be one of my favourite things in Edinburgh. It is an easy bus ride from the city centre, with buses running very frequently back and forth. It was really interesting and you get to see lots of the rooms. The audio tour was great, one of the best audio tours that I’ve done. The tour is a set one way route, which means that you don’t miss anything. Would recommend a trip to the tea room as well. It’s really good and reasonably priced. We got to the tea room about midday and it was already busy. The queue shortly after that was quite long, I imagine in summer there would be quite a wait for a table so it could be wise to plan for before or after that peak lunch period. The souvenir shop is really overpriced, which is a shame really because it means people are less likely to buy. But that certainly doesn’t detract from the attraction itself. We are delighted to learn that the tour of Britannia exceeded your expectations, and that you had such a wonderful time touring the five decks. Indeed, local buses 11, 22 and 35 travel to Ocean Terminal where Britannia is permanently berthed. As you say, the tour is self-guided using our free audio guide or your mobile phone, allowing visitors to explore Britannia at their own leisure. - mach1641London, United Kingdom14 contributionsExcursion ahoy!If the weather is chilly (as it was in February) this is a really good way to fill 2 or 3 hours and stay relatively warm. Well presented audio tour and some fascinating artifacts to see. The yacht is in great shape and it’s easy to get an impression of how it functioned. Even better is the insight it provides into the lives of the royals whilst they were on board. The tea room on the top deck is well worth a visit - a little pricey but great service and tasty too.We are delighted to learn that you enjoyed your tour of Britannia, and that you found it to be such a good insight into life on board for the Royal Family and dedicated crew of Royal Yachtsmen. As you mention, we recommend allowing around 2 hours to complete the tour, however as it is self-guided you are free to enjoy the Royal Yacht at your own pace. Visited after getting tickets on line. Lots of people as Edinburgh Castle was closed due to the visit by King Charles III. And it was raining heavily, so not good at all. Very good to see how homey it was & why the Queen was so upset to see it scuttled. You can visit everywhere on board & but their own freshly made Fudge - but it's very expensive! They have a great gift shop & being inside a shopping centre, there are cafes & eateries. Great place for the history but not on a wet day.

We booked a time slot but when we arrived you have to go through a soulless shopping centre and then we were in queue after queue even though we had booked a time slot , people were just walking inn so that formed the queues ( greed by whoever runs it ) once in and down to the second deck it was a little quieter but then you had all the zombies stood around with the devices stuck to there ears , I think it would be a much more enjoyable experience if they were to use written information boards to read about the ship, I would not recommend going there as I thought it was expensive for the experience.

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are sorry to read that Britannia was not your ‘cup of tea’. Indeed, the entrance to Britannia is through our Visitor Centre, which is located on the second floor of Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre and has enabled us to become a highly accessible attraction. For the information of others, an admission ticket includes a complimentary audio guide, available in over 30 languages, something that would be impossible to achieve with written boards, as well as a free Annual Pass for 12 months admission. Our audio guide allows visitors to tour all five decks at their own pace. The Royal Yacht Britannia has again been named as Tripadvisor’s No.1 UK Attraction, and has retained its Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Award, which is awarded to less than 1% of Tripadvisor’s 8 million listings.

Absolutely no idea how the reviewer below came to his conclusion! We had a wonderful time. The staff were very helpful, the audio informative with lots of interesting facts, fabulous photos. Easy to follow route, however it was possible to linger for a longer look at the larger rooms if desired including the engine room for those particularly interested. I thought it was definitely worth every penny. Such an interesting part of our history, even spotted a fabric we had at home when I was growing up!! Visit as early as you can, went at 10am which was definitely a good time to go. Took the tram from the city centre could not have been easier. Very much appreciated the bag drop as we had overnight bags with us. To get the best experience definitely leave at least an hour and a half, longer if you want a cup of tea on board, we didn't as we were catching a train so can't comment on that.

Not a good place to go if you have breathing problems and on oxygen. Was not clearly sign posted as to were you go. Staff not that helpful was looking forward to seeing Britannia but the experience left me disappointed. As you have to go up and down stairs, there was only two toilets and there was a queue Was not worth the money

This tour was money well spent. The ship is impressive, with a hell of a lot of history attached. The tour layout was excellent with great audio accompaniment. We ate in the cafe which was very well presented and to the highest standards. Afternoon tea was reasonable given the surroundings. All staff were attentive and polite. A “must see” if you are visiting Edinburgh. The tram has been extended goes from the city directly to the yacht.

Stunning interiors and a great detailed complementary audio guide, as was expected of this class yacht. I enjoyed the stories of the bear on the ceiling fan and was quite taken by the sheer size of the dining hall. It is educational to see the collection of ceremonial gifts from their journeys.
There wasn't much of a queue when I went to the booking counter. I got a 10% discount as I had a hop-on hop-off pass as well.
It took me about 1.5 - 2 hours (entry ~3 pm) to explore all levels. The engineer in me took longer in the lower decks. To me, that's where the muscle is :))
The Corgi treasure hunt kept me on the lookout. I enjoyed the search for the competition.
All in all, Thank you for opening up this experience to the public.

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. It is a delight to read about your experience. The simple yet elegant furnishings that visitors see on Britannia were chosen by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to create the feeling of a country home at sea. We do suggest visitors allow one and a half to two hours to tour Britannia with additional time should you wish to visit the Royal Deck Tearoom and Gift Shop.

Really enjoyed this visit and a great insight to what life would have been like aboard.
The tea room was very nice - with big portions of cake - and made the trip feel even more special (they didn’t really cater for children apart from having milkshakes on the menu).
It was very easy to get to from the city centre using the trams and well worth visiting. Accessible for wheelchairs in our group too.

Hello and thank you for your question. Until the end of August 2023, our last admission time is 4:00pm, with our closing time being 6:00pm. If you arrived at 3:00pm, you will have three hours to tour Britannia. I hope you have a wonderful visit.

Hi, I read in a previous post that there are concessions for older visitors. Looking today at your website there doesn’t appear to be any?

Hello and thank you for your question. We do not offer a concession for over 60s. All tickets include the use of an audio guide and an application for an Annual Pass which provides 12 months free admission to return to visit Britannia.

Not sure that I will have time for a tour during the day on my next visit. Is it possible to view from the pier during the evening hours? Would we be able to walk alongside the dock for close viewing?

Hello and thank you for your question. For those wishing to view the exterior of the Royal Yacht, a great view of Britannia can be found at the Viewing Terrace within Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.

Hello,
Thank you for your question. There are a number of cruise ship docking/tender locations on Edinburgh's coast therefore it would depend on where your ship is coming in.
We hope you do visit and enjoy your tour!

The Royal Yacht is accessible to wheelchair visitors, but I would contact the staff directly prior to visiting just to make sure.

Is it mandatory to book a visit. I am planning a visit to Edinburgh but don't want to be tied down to a particular ar date and time.

We did, but you can just turn up. The lounge onboard does get busy, and you may need to queue. Enjoy
