- Nicola B8 contributionsOverpriced and disappointingLocated right next to and accessed from a shopping centre. This somewhat distracts from the overall visitor experience and makes it impossible to get an overall view of the ship from the outside. As it is now a visitor attraction I cannot understand why some areas are not accessible including the staircase and why you have to look through glass to see inside some of the rooms and staff quarters. Really not worth the money. Obviously the ship is now very dated but amazing to think the royal family enjoyed such privilege including private holidays all at the tax payers expense. Now the taxpayer is expected to pay again to visit the ship in its retirement. It really does beggar belief! On the plus side the cafe was nice although again completely overpriced.Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. For those wishing to view the exterior of the Royal Yacht, a great view of Britannia can be found at the Viewing Terrace within Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre. Britannia is now owned and cared for by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust and therefore as a charity all surplus funds from ticket sales, the Gift Shop and the Royal Deck Tea Room are reinvested in preserving the Royal Yacht for future generations. For the information of others, The Royal Yacht Britannia has again been named as the UK’s Best Visitor Attraction by readers of Which magazine, and has retained its Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Best of the Best Award, making us one of the Top 1% in the World.Written March 21, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten March 17, 2023
- kaztinCodsall, United Kingdom218 contributionsDisappointing!Such a disappointment! We were so looking forward to this visit. The approach to the Yacht is through a modern shopping complex which is strange. The yacht itself sits quayside by skips of rubbish which is not a very attractive environment for such an iconic boat! The commentary can be accessed on your smartphone or via a hand held console given to you. The tour leads you onto each deck and most areas are viewed through glass, which is disappointing. It was underwhelming and we were disappointed, we were going to try the onboard cafe but £9 for a sandwich was too much money! The toilets available whilst queuing to board were scruffy and not a good look! At £18.50 per adult we felt it wasn’t worth the money. I do think something should be done around the quayside where the yacht is moored as it wasn’t very nice at all!Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. Indeed, the entrance to Britannia is through our Visitor Centre, which is located on the second floor of Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre and has enabled us to become a highly accessible attraction for everyone irrespective of any mobility issues. We are sorry to read that your visit was not your 'cup of tea'. Whilst visitors are free to wander around Britannia at their leisure and enter all the largest rooms, six very small rooms are indeed viewed through windows as that enables everyone to see everything in the room. That said, we will ensure that your review is passed on to our Visitor Experience Manager as the toilets are usually immaculate and should not have appeared ‘scruffy’. - Terese M7 contributionsSkipNot worth the visit. Being in the US Navy seeing the ship was boring. I was looking forward to seeing how the other half lived and was just not impressed. Had lunch in the tea room. My chicken sandwich was nice but we ordered water, wine, whiskey and tea and nothing arrived. Food was delivered quick but we just kept seeing the waiter pass by with no inquiry to how we we were doing or if we needed anything. I finally asked for the check and shocker then the drink arrived. I told him to remove the drinks from the check and paid and left. Disappointing.Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are sorry to read that your visit to the Royal Deck Tea Room was not the five-star experience that we aim to give every visitor. We will pass this comment on to our Tea Room Manager, as they always look to improve guest experience wherever possible. - AburelBucharest, Romania2,488 contributionsOverratedWe were a bit disappointed by this visit. Either it has been toned down, or it is pretty basic. There is no glamour. The ship is used also for events and dinners. The visit allows views of the main deck plus the salon and dining. Later, some other facilities of the ship are displayed. Pretty touristic and neutral.Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are sorry to read that Britannia was not your ‘cup of tea’. For the information of others, 95% of the tour is original to Britannia and is kindly on loan from the Royal Collection Trust. The furnishings, though simple and elegant, are a reflection of the post-war period of austerity in which the Royal Yacht was built. Staff not that helpful was looking forward to seeing Britannia but the experience left me disappointed. As you have to go up and down stairs, there was only two toilets and there was a queue Was not worth the moneyThank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. For the information of others, Britannia is highly accessible with two lifts as well as stairs to each of the five decks. Toilets are located in our Visitor Centre and regularly throughout the tour route. - Brassed O1 contributionGreat ship, but unpleasant experience on arriving. The ship itself and the history and staff were brilliant....but the parking and approach to the ship are frankly awful. We followed signs in our vehicle and arrived at a dead end where there were no clear signs what to do or where to go. Couldn't see the ship and just a multi story car park in front of us with such a restricted height our vehicle couldn't get in. So what to do? While we waited thinking two other vehicles arrived with the same problem. Stuck with nothing to do but turn round, not even sure if we were in the right place. No open parking, no signs pointing to other parking. Eventually decided to try the car park, with 1/2 inch to spare, got in and parked in the dingiest dark place you could imagine. Then no signs saying "Britannia this way", just concrete walls. Then found the lifts - which didn't appear to be working. Finally found steps up to the right level - guess work, because there were no signs saying which level you were at. Finally arrived at the right place and the ship was great, but where they've put it and the experience to find it was awful, my partner quite upset. Not the kind of thing that should happen at one of the leading tourist/historical attractions. Needs improving.Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are pleased that you did enjoy learning about Britannia’s fascinating Royal history but are sorry to read about your experience in finding the car parking that is available within Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre. We will ensure that your comments are passed on to our Visitor Experience Manager. For the information of future guests, free car parking is available in the multi-storey car parks of Ocean Terminal, we suggest visitors park on level E, as this is the closest to our Visitor Centre. Our Visitor Centre and the start of the tour is located within the Shopping Centre itself, on the second floor.Written October 27, 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 25, 2023

Went with my dad who has limited mobility. All of the staff without exception were super with him, very friendly and welcoming but also very patient. We were offered the use of a wheelchair whilst we toured the yacht and it was so easy to get round the yacht in a wheelchair - one of the best places to cater with disabled that I have been to
It was fascinating to see how the Queen used to travel as well as all the staff with her. And was different to just going round a stately home. The audio guide was also a great idea as meant my dad could listen to everything, whereas when its all written down, he struggles to read everything
There was also a fun "find the corgi" trail for children
The tea room is pricey, but then how often can you say you've had tea and scones where the Queen has also dined!
If you're in Edinburgh can only recommend you visit - especially on a February day!

What a lovely review! We are pleased to learn that you enjoyed exploring Britannia’s five decks and learning about life on board for the Royal Family and dedicated crew. As you mention, the Royal Yacht is a highly accessible visitor attraction with lifts and ramps between each of the decks and an accessible tour route, for wheelchairs of up to 67cm width. Indeed, the tour is self-guided using our complimentary audio handset, allowing visitors to explore Britannia at their own leisure, whilst learning about the Royal Yacht’s unique history. We are pleased to learn that our cuddly corgi treasure hunt proved to be such a hit – we hope you managed to spot them all! A visit to our Royal Deck Tea Room is certainly a perfect way to complete your tour and take in the stunning waterfront views. Thank you for visiting and for your kind review.

An absolute highlight of our visit to Edinburgh was taking a bus to Leith to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia! What a stunning place to visit, the whole tour is perfect with excellent commentary. Allow at least 2-3 hours hours to get the most out of your visit as there is so much history to absorb and it would be a shame to rush through. The views are absolutely stunning from the decks. We would also recommend afternoon tea in the restaurant either during or once you have finished, service is friendly and welcoming whilst being professional. We would definitely visit again, as this is a wonderful place to visit. Highly recommended.

A visit to our Royal Deck Tea Room is indeed a wonderful addition to your tour and the views out across the Firth of Forth are certainly stunning. We hope that you will apply for an Annual Pass, included in your admission cost, as this allows each visitor to return, free of charge for up to a year. If you liked Britannia, you’ll love our sister ship, Fingal, Scotland’s only luxury floating hotel, where you can enjoy an overnight stay or a decadent Afternoon Tea, Evening Supper or Cocktails. Thank you for visiting and for your kind recommendation, we really appreciate it.

We pre-booked a ticket for myself and my wife (who works for the NHS) purchased a discounted ticket at the desk .
The tour starts by going through the museum and onto the top deck . You can get an audio handset or download it onto your phone.
It was fascinating and informative , seeing all aspects of life on board from the crew to the royal Family. We absolutely loved it
Also liked the Royal Tea rooms where we had Scones and Tea - delscious . We would thoroughly recommend if you are in Edinburgh , buses go to the ocean Terminal for the tour.

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia and for providing such a great review. As you say, our audio guides give a wonderful insight into what life was like on board for the Royal Family and those who served on board as Royal Yachtsmen. The freshly baked scones in the Royal Deck Tea Room are indeed delicious. For the benefit of future visitors, local buses 11, 22 and 35 travel regularly from the city centre to Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.

Very well organised and maintained tourist attraction. All staff were very friendly and helpful. Nice touch of humour with comical placement of toy corgis in most rooms (especially the sick bay). Included in admission price were handsets with very informative audio guide which was very good and top marks for having Welsh as an option. Very interesting and informative visit with plenty to see. We were lucky that it was quiet so could wander without crowds . Not suitable in bad weather as decks are obviously open . Spent couple of hours easily. Finished trip with lovely lunch of sandwiches and soup or sandwiches and scones. Very pleasant and enjoyable.

We are delighted to learn that you had such an interesting and informative visit to Britannia. Our dedicated staff will be delighted to read your kind words, as they work hard to ensure that every visitor’s tour of Britannia is extra special. We hope you managed to spot all of our cuddly corgis who are hiding around the ship for our Cuddly Corgi Treasure Hunt! As you say, the tour is self-guided using our free audio handset, available in a choice of 30 languages. For the information of others, we are an all-weather attraction with the majority of the tour being inside the ship. Thank you for visiting and for giving us five stars!

The yacht itself was beautiful, the rooms were lovely and stunning to see. Upon entry you have a walkthrough and see photos and printed information on the walls. At the end of this, you are advised that you will be given what looks like a phone to listen to the information provided in different languages and there are signs posted advising which number you need to press to listen to the relevant information.
About half way through the walk through of the yacht, there are signs for the Tea Rooms and there is a short wait depending on the time of day on your visit. The menu is not large but is very nice and I highly recommend the potato wedges. It isn't cheap as we had soup/sandwich, cake and a drink and it worked out about £35 for 2 people.
The downside of this was that I am hard of hearing and could not listen to the information provided on the 'telephones'. I asked if there were sign posted information inside the yacht or any other type of information available and was told no. It would have been helpful if I could have been given a leaflet to read about each area so that I could fully enjoy the visit as I felt I was missing out on information given to other tourists...

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are pleased that you found Britannia stunning to see. As you kindly mention, our complimentary audio guided tour allows you to explore Britannia’s five decks at your own pace. The tour can be listened to on our audio handset which works with the T-loop system, or personal mobile phone, on both of which the volume can be controlled. The self-led tour allows you to learn about life on board, whilst taking in as much or as little of the tour as you wish. We do apologise that you were not offered another version as we do have a printed version of the script, as well as tablets available with the Britannia tour in British and American Sign Language. We will of course pass your feedback regarding the audio tour onto our Visitor Experience Manager, as we are always keen to make improvements where possible. We hope to welcome you back aboard to fully experience all five decks with your free Annual Pass.
For the information of others, admission to Britannia is less than other top Edinburgh attractions and includes an Annual Pass, which allows each visitor to return free of charge, for up to a year. Britannia has been named as the UK’s Best Visitor Attraction 2020 by Which? Magazine, and has retained its Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice Best of the Best Award for the 9th consecutive year, making us one of the Top 1% in the World.

We really enjoyed this. To be honest, I wasn’t that bothered about going but it turned out to be one of my favourite things in Edinburgh. It is an easy bus ride from the city centre, with buses running very frequently back and forth. It was really interesting and you get to see lots of the rooms. The audio tour was great, one of the best audio tours that I’ve done. The tour is a set one way route, which means that you don’t miss anything. Would recommend a trip to the tea room as well. It’s really good and reasonably priced. We got to the tea room about midday and it was already busy. The queue shortly after that was quite long, I imagine in summer there would be quite a wait for a table so it could be wise to plan for before or after that peak lunch period. The souvenir shop is really overpriced, which is a shame really because it means people are less likely to buy. But that certainly doesn’t detract from the attraction itself.

If the weather is chilly (as it was in February) this is a really good way to fill 2 or 3 hours and stay relatively warm.
Well presented audio tour and some fascinating artifacts to see. The yacht is in great shape and it’s easy to get an impression of how it functioned.
Even better is the insight it provides into the lives of the royals whilst they were on board.
The tea room on the top deck is well worth a visit - a little pricey but great service and tasty too.

I wasn't sure about going here, but I went anyway and thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was great to see this ship, a piece of Royal history, preserved like this. The audio tour was full of interesting facts and guided you round the yacht at your own pace.
I loved hearing about the running of the yacht and about all the people who worked on board and their jobs. The living accommodation was also very interesting.
We had a cuppa in the cafe but didn't eat there.
I thought it was worth the money (£17.50) and would highly recommend as something to do when visiting Edinburgh.

This is a great place to visit any day but especially on a wet, windy day as, if you park in the Blue Car Park (level E), you are indoors for the vast majority of the time.
Brittania is thoughtfully and sympathetically presented and you can do the tour at your leisure using a smart phone or a cleaned and sanitised individual handset. Parking and the use of the handset are both free.
The staff are cheery, welcoming and very helpful. Great efforts were made to keep the floors in the lift tower dry and safe.
The royal yacht is beautiful and I can understand Her Majesty's great affection for her. I still haven't forgiven Tony Blair for her decommissioning!

A worth visit! Very interesting and informative. You really get an impression of how the life was back then on the Britannia, when it was still active.
I would definitely recommend to book the audioguide tour around the museum and inside the ship, since you get a lot of extra information.
Important: In the days of Covid-19, you should wear a mask, since it is not always possible to maintain social distancing. Also you have to book a time slot and buy the ticket in advance.
A must see for everyone visiting Edinburgh!

Hi there, I noted that serving members of HM Armed forces and veterans get discount on production of an ID card, however veterans are not issued with an ID card when they leave the forces. I would like to visit next week, but as a veteran of 24 years service in the Army only have my discharge papers which as I am coming from Suffolk I will not be carrying.

Hello and thank you for your question. For those wishing to view the exterior of the Royal Yacht, a great view of Britannia can be found at the Viewing Terrace within Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.

Thank you for your question. There are a number of cruise ship docking/tender locations on Edinburgh's coast therefore it would depend on where your ship is coming in.

The Royal Yacht is accessible to wheelchair visitors, but I would contact the staff directly prior to visiting just to make sure.
