As a royalist what better way to spend my birthday then on Royal Yacht Britannia. Easy to get to from our hotel in Edinburgh. Yes there are some road works in front of the ocean terminal building but regeneration will in the long term being more tourists to Leith I’m sure and once into the terminal building shopping mall you have a good opportunity to wander out onto the boardwalk for your first view of her. Wow she didn’t disappoint and it brought tears to my eyes.

Excellent customer service at both the ticket desk ( pre booked) and the audio tour collection point.

You enter a small museum area before boarding the yacht via steps or lift starting on the fourth deck working downwards from the wheelhouse to the engine room with the private and royal quarters and sun terrace in between.

Audio tour was free as part of the ticket and we’d highly recommend you take this option and it’s narrated by Mark Bonnar who has an amazing voice.

Each deck has so much history but for me there were two highlights that stood out for me. The first was seeing every clock stopped at 15:01 as I so clearly remember watching her Majesty the Queen shed a tear when the yacht was decommissioned after she disembarked at precisely that time and secondly and most poignantly for was walking the same deck that Diana was famously photographed rushing to her sons with her arms flung out to embrace the princes.

So much history so many memories shared aboard this living museum.

After a couple of hours of wandering the four decks and outside areas we headed to the famous tearoom. Despite not being able to pre book tables our arrival was impeccable timing as we were given table 1 by the window which afforded us fabulous views.

As it was my birthday we indulged in a Moët Chandon cream tea for two. Sandwiches (cream cheese with smoked salmon & chicken and bacon) were exquisite as was the warmed fudge cake and fruit scones. Even the little touches like the firework topping on the cappuccino sums up the excellent attention to detail as it was Nov 5th.

Biggest shout out goes to Gayle who I believe might be a senior staff member. She went over and beyond to make my birthday trip to the tearoom and yacht a memorable experience. I will treasure the small gift always. Thank you

From the moment we took the escalator up the floors in the ocean terminal mall to my final glance of Britannia as we walked away from the port it felt like I was a little part of royal history.

Its was definitely the highlight of our four day trip to Edinburgh. Great value and if we lived closer would be making use of the free annual pass upgrade. Worth every penny. Can’t recommend it enough you won’t be disappointed.

What a lovely review! We are thrilled to learn that you had such a wonderful experience aboard Britannia, exploring the five decks, and learning about the Yacht’s impressive history acquired over 44 years of Royal service. Indeed, local buses 11, 22 and 35 travel to Ocean Terminal where Britannia is permanently berthed. As you mention, Britannia has a new audio guide, available through a handset or on your mobile phone and narrated by award-winning Scottish actor Mark Bonnar (Shetland and Line of Duty). A visit to our Royal Deck Tea Room for our Moët Cream Tea Special is the perfect way to complete your tour and enjoy the beautiful views out across the Firth of Forth. Gayle and the rest of our dedicated staff will be delighted to read your kind words as they work hard to ensure that every visitor’s tour of Britannia is extra special. Thank you for visiting and for taking the time to leave us such a kind review, we truly appreciate it!

We on our short city break visited the Royal Yacht Britannia after it was recommended by friends, and have to say what a great day out it is.
We initially tried to book our tickets online but eventually phoned the ship booking office and were told to just turn up as there would be plenty of availability for the trip.
The tour itself was really well planned out and gave you access to most of the ship, with a very informative commentary by the use of a hand held device.
All of the departments of the ship are very well exhibited giving the listener a very interesting insight as to the day to day running and serving on board the ship. The size of the ship was very interesting and of it's day was very luxurious ,and it was very interesting to see the Royals accommodation on board along with the crew's cabins, engine room the bridge and so on compared to the modern day cruise ships.
To get to the Yacht was very easy from any service bus with Ocean Terminal on the front at a very reasonable price.
All in all if in Edinburgh very well worth a visit.

We are thrilled to hear that you experienced a great day out on The Royal Yacht Britannia and that you found the tour to be well planned. For the information of other visitors, we recommend that tickets are booked online and in advance from our website to guarantee admission. As you mention, visitors may explore five decks of the Yacht, where they can step inside many rooms including the elegant State Apartments as well as the working areas such as the Bridge and the Engine Room. A complimentary audio handset guide is included with an admission ticket and this brings some of the many fascinating stories of Britannia to life. The Royal Yacht Britannia is a short distance from Edinburgh City Centre and can be reached by local bus with numbers, 22 and 35 travelling from the centre of the city for £1.80 each way (correct change or contactless payment needed). It is wonderful to hear that you enjoyed your visit and we thank you for giving us a five-star review.

We really enjoyed this. To be honest, I wasn’t that bothered about going but it turned out to be one of my favourite things in Edinburgh. It is an easy bus ride from the city centre, with buses running very frequently back and forth. It was really interesting and you get to see lots of the rooms. The audio tour was great, one of the best audio tours that I’ve done. The tour is a set one way route, which means that you don’t miss anything. Would recommend a trip to the tea room as well. It’s really good and reasonably priced. We got to the tea room about midday and it was already busy. The queue shortly after that was quite long, I imagine in summer there would be quite a wait for a table so it could be wise to plan for before or after that peak lunch period. The souvenir shop is really overpriced, which is a shame really because it means people are less likely to buy. But that certainly doesn’t detract from the attraction itself.

We pre-booked a ticket for myself and my wife (who works for the NHS) purchased a discounted ticket at the desk .
The tour starts by going through the museum and onto the top deck . You can get an audio handset or download it onto your phone.
It was fascinating and informative , seeing all aspects of life on board from the crew to the royal Family. We absolutely loved it

Also liked the Royal Tea rooms where we had Scones and Tea - delscious . We would thoroughly recommend if you are in Edinburgh , buses go to the ocean Terminal for the tour.

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia and for providing such a great review. As you say, our audio guides give a wonderful insight into what life was like on board for the Royal Family and those who served on board as Royal Yachtsmen. The freshly baked scones in the Royal Deck Tea Room are indeed delicious. For the benefit of future visitors, local buses 11, 22 and 35 travel regularly from the city centre to Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.

This is a very well organised attraction. The display before boarding the yacht gives you a taste of the history of the Royal Yachts.
The hand held guide is an excellent idea. It gives you the information about the yacht at the relevant points instead of everyone crowded around reading a small information board.
The yacht is very well maintained and surprisingly small for a Royal Yacht. The Royal cabins are fantastic to see. The State Drawing Room is magnificent.
This is one of these attractions that I learned an incredible lot. The entire tour takes approximately 2hrs. The staff are all very friendly and professional. Don’t miss out on taking lunch in the Tea Room. The Tea Room maintains an air of elegance and the food is very good.
Overall a great unmissable attraction. Just a word of advice, there are a lot of roadworks going on in the city and around the attraction so give yourself plenty of time to get there as some roads that are open one day, suddenly are closed the next.

A must do if visiting Leith!

So interesting and informative, quite a lot of 'hands on' things which was a lovely surprise.

We used the audio sets provided, which I would definitely recommend, the information is delivered in small, easy to absorb chunks.

Being self guided you can spend as much time as you wish to wandering around.

We followed our visit with a trip to the tea room which again is lovely

Could not get a ticket to the Zoo, so decided this would be an alternative, we were based in Edinburgh so at the moment it's a bus ride to the Yacht, absolutely no issue there, in future the tram will operate to the ocean terminal and this can only be good news for the Yacht and its trust.
Now to the visit, it was absolutely superb, the supplied audio guides were excellent and the tour is well laid out, some superb gems are on-board and it's an insight to the Royal Family's life on board....
Definitely recommend this...and would visit again...
Admission fee very reasonable considering what you get to see

Thanks

Phil

We caught the bus from Princes Street to Ocean Terminal. Short walk through the shopping centre to get to the Yacht. You were offered a handset to listen to information about the yacht or could listen through a QR code on your phone, no extra charge for this. Lots of information and history. Corgi dog spotting for the children. On the deck there is a cafe with lovely cakes and afternoon tea's, all made on board. It can get busy so may have to wait. Staff are around to answer any questions. It's a beautiful yacht and you can imagine the Queen and family enjoying their time on board. We arrived at around 10.30 and it wasn't too busy but by the time we left (around 2 hours) it was alot busier and people had to wait to enter certain parts because of crowding. The gift shop was well stocked, helpful staff and lots to choose from, varying prices. Over all a great visit for anyone who likes things royal.

For those who are interested in the British royal family or yachts, I think this is a must-see while in Edinburgh. The ship is surprisingly small (at least to me) but the rooms inside are very elegant and well preserved and there is lots of information to learn about royal history, which my parents very much enjoyed discovering. However, my children, who aren't as interested in the royal family, got a little bored so I would really only recommend to those who are interested in the royal family or yachts. The yacht is in an area of Edinburgh I don't think we would have visited otherwise but we went for a walk along the water afterwards and found there were lots of nice cafes and restaurants which was an added bonus.

Our younger visitors can enjoy a special children’s audio guide, and our cuddly corgi treasure hunt is popular with all ages.
