- Steve RBolton, United Kingdom600 contributionsI love anything nautical, especially the historical stuff, so I had to visit Brittania whilst in the area. It's interesting to see how our British representitives lived and entertained foreign dignitaries whilst onboard. Saying that I'm glad that my taxes aren't supporting this kind of excess any more. I was travelling by car and found access a bit of an annoyance as road works in the area weren't registered with online maps. If you too are travelling by car be aware of the city wide congestion and allow some extra time.It is great to read that The Royal Yacht Britannia was a fascinating experience, especially for someone with a passion for nautical history. We are pleased to read that you found learning about life on board for the Royal Family and Royal Yachtsmen was interesting. Visitors are able to view five decks, from the Bridge, Admiral’s Cabin, State Dining Room, as well as the gleaming Engine Room. For the information of others, there is free car parking at Ocean Terminal which is currently undergoing redevelopment, adding new leisure and retail businesses, as well as residential spaces. As part of this redevelopment, Britannia will gain an exciting new Visitor Centre and Gift Shop.Written September 25, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited September 2024Traveled soloWritten September 21, 2024
- Roger WLutterworth, United Kingdom17 contributionsFrom the warm welcome in the ticket office and audio guide collection we had a thoroughly enjoyable and informative visit. It was a privilege to be in the spaces used by the late Queen, members of the Royal family and associated dignitaries and VIPs. Also great to see 'behind the scenes' to learn how the ship and the crew worked - including the mess and bar areas where the Royals sometimes visited!!.. It was a treat to visit the tea rooms where we were greeted by the manageress who seated us in a splendid window table. We were served a wonderful afternoon tea by the lovely staff - especially Finnian who looked after us - even taking photos of / for us. Would not hesitate to recommend a visit to this iconic ship - one tip would be to allow plenty of time to thoroughly explore all the areas available (suggest 3 > 4 hours)We are delighted you enjoyed the visit to The Royal Yacht Britannia and felt privileged to explore the rooms that were used by the Royal Family. It is wonderful to learn of your pleasant time in the Royal Deck Tearoom and appreciated Finnian's service. - dexporterPoulton Le Fylde, United Kingdom244 contributionsWe visited around 10.15 on a Thursday and it was very quiet. The audio tour was extremely informative, and could be paused at any time to allow you to browse at your leisure. We took about 1 1/2 hours and really enjoyed it. The tram stops right in front of the attraction, very handy, and plenty of toilets were available on board. A few stairs to navigate, but not too onerous.Thank you for sharing your detailed five-star review. It sounds like you had a pleasant visit and it is great to read that you found the audio tour was informative and flexible, allowing you to explore at your own leisure. For the information of other visitors, there are lifts and ramps to each of the decks.Written February 5, 2025This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited January 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten January 23, 2025
- Steve HYorkshire, United Kingdom14 contributionsThe visit lasts about 2 hours including coffee & cake in the tea rooms. The yacht is a time capsule of maritime history of a bygone age. The exhibits are presented in such a way that you believe the yacht could set sail tomorrow. The well organised tour is on 4 levels starting at the top and working you way down to the engine room. The surrounding dock area is currently being redeveloped so there are some unsightly demolished buildings. We are thrilled to receive your five-star rating of The Royal Yacht Britannia. Whilst visitors are welcome to tour at their own pace with our complimentary audio guide, we do suggest you allow one and a half to two hours to tour Britannia, allowing extra time to visit the Royal Deck Tearoom and Gift Shop. It is wonderful to know that you found the Yacht to be a captivating time capsule. With 95% of the tour being original to Britannia, and kindly on loan from the Royal Collection Trust, coming on board does feel like you are transported back to the 1950s. As you mentioned, Ocean Terminal is undergoing redevelopment, adding new leisure and retail businesses, as well as residential spaces. As part of this redevelopment, Britannia will gain an exciting new Visitor Centre and Gift Shop. We hope to welcome you back for another memorable visit in the future!Written March 7, 2025This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten March 5, 2025
- Neil9877Strathaven, United Kingdom167 contributionsAnybody with an interest in British history should definitely have the Royal Yacht Britannia on their to visit list. There is much more of the yacht now accessible since we last visited a long time ago. Most areas are open for viewing, including the Royal apartments, officers quarters, sailors messing, the bridge and navigation area, finally the engine room. I would suggest trying to visit at quiet time as some areas of the yacht could become crowded at peak times. We are glad you found The Royal Yacht Britannia as a must-visit for anyone interested in British history. You can see how two hours could fly by with all there is to explore and discover. - Emma ALeicestershire, United Kingdom9 contributionsThis is my second time, my first was 16+yrs ago! Whether you love the royals or not the history behind this Yacht is just amazing! My boys 16 and 9 both had hand devices to listen in to and thoroughly enjoyed going around. OK some people go around quicker than others so in some areas it gets busy but it soon clears. We didn't rush, took photos and it took us 1.5hrs. There are no plaques to read as you go around, there on numbers on walls as you go you dial the number on the handheld and hold it to your ear so for very young children although there are children's versions they do find it hard and tiring! The Yacht is so beautifully conserved, ok old fashioned but it was built in 1953 so not the decor of today but to the style back then....so much detail little things, the clocks all set to 15.01pm the last time the late Queen set foot off the Yacht all very touching. Yes they are knocking buildings down and building a new shopping centre around the docks but it genuinely doesn't affect your trip we heard nothing! In my eyes if you're going to Edinburgh this is a must. If you use the tram from the centre it takes around 20mins to get there so easy! Have a wonderful time.Thank you for sharing your detailed five-star review. We are thrilled to read that you enjoyed your second visit after 16 years and found the history of The Royal Yacht Britannia amazing. It is wonderful to know your boys enjoyed using the complimentary audio guides and that you appreciated the beautifully conserved details. For the information of others, Ocean Terminal, where The Royal Yacht Britannia is permanently berthed, is undergoing redevelopment, adding new leisure and retail businesses, as well as residential spaces. - JRSpigot227 contributionsThe self guided audio tour works well except when you have people shuffling around with the volume on FULL and not holding the thing to their ear. After a while of listening to the entitlement and privilege and all the special things I got a little tired of it. There weren't a lot of people visiting when we were there but there were holdups in places and even a couple with a pushchair so perhaps they should apply some metered access. I thought they offerred concessionary tickets but in fact the majority of visitors were elderly when we were there. Good job we were able to use the stairs for the different levels otherwise using the lift would have been slow.We are sorry to read that a visit to The Royal Yacht Britannia was not your 'cup of tea'. As you mention, the complimentary audio guide allows visitors to explore the ship at their own leisure. Britannia is highly accessible with lifts and ramps to each of the five decks and tickets can be pre-booked from our website in timed slots to ensure a comfortable experience for visitors. For the information of others, visitors can apply for a complimentary Annual Pass, which allows visitors to return, free of charge, for a year after their visit. Britannia has again been named as Tripadvisor's No.1 UK Attraction 2023-24, and has retained its Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice Best of the Best Award, which is awarded to less than 1% of Tripadvisor's 8 million listings.Written October 16, 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten October 14, 2024
- Lancs22144 contributionsWell worth the £20 per person price. Get the unfortunate part done with first...massive building work taking place right next to the Britannia creating a lot of noise which affects the outside portion of the tour. Having said that its a minor irritation. The tour is self guided with a hand held device. Fascinating to see how the Royal family lived on board and how the crew lived their lives. Engine room is very interesting and you have to feel for the lowest of the low ratings living in that part of the ship. I have no hesitation recommending this attraction.Visited March 2025Traveled as a coupleWritten March 23, 2025
- Felicity GBuckingham, United Kingdom83 contributionsSecond time visiting and better this time as not so busy. (Very windy day in December!). We had tickets for 11am however were able to enter earlier and it was very quiet which was excellent as meant plenty of time to look at all the areas without feeling rushed. The audio tour is clear and informative and truly gives an insight into life on board the yacht. If you have an interest in the Royal Family and/or have watched The Crown a very good visit. It took us about 90 minutes. Highly recommend next door, a visit to the Leith Distillery. A vertical distillery, the only one in Scotland. The 90 minute tour takes you through the entire whisky distilling process in a working distillery - absolutely fascinating. The tasting experience was superb and highly recommend the bar/restaurant for a drink/lunch.What a pleasure to welcome you back aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia for a second time to create more memories. Indeed, visitors gain an insight into what it was like to live and work on the Yacht for the Royal Family and crew of Royal Yachtsmen, as they tour the five decks with our informative audio guide handset. As you mentioned, visitors may also wish to visit our neighbours, Port of Leith Distillery, while visiting Leith. We look forward to seeing you aboard again! - S W49 contributionsI enjoyed my experience visiting the RYB, I remember when it was decommissioned when I was a little girl. I always wanted to see it as a supporter of the Royal family. It was like getting a little glimpse into the Royal family's life and the lives of those in service on the ship. They give you a great handheld device that hives you an audio tour around the ship at prompt points. It is extremely useful as you can select your chosen language. Kids can use one as well and my 10 year old - who isn't a reading fan, could listen and learn. It was interesting. However I knocked off a star because it was very crowded with so many people turning up at the same time - it became a bit cramped and the pacing of visitors would have been beneficial. We didn't visit the cafe addition on the ship because it seemed everyone was heading there after the tour.We are delighted that you enjoyed your visit to The Royal Yacht Britannia and enjoyed getting a glimpse into life on board for the Royal Family and crew of the Royal Yachtsmen while it was in service for 44 years. It is fantastic to know that the audio guide was useful, especially for your 10-year-old. For the information of others, our complimentary audio guide is available in over 30 languages.Written February 25, 2025This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited February 2025Traveled with familyWritten February 21, 2025

We spent an excellent rainy day walking around the yacht at our leisure listening to the free audio guides and then had an excellent meal in the restaurant afterwards. The route around the various levels is well laid out and signposted but you can spend as much time as you want there and can go back and revisit areas if you want. The yacht is being carefully renovated by the charity that owns it and they are doing an excellent job.
The yacht is easily reached by the Edinburgh trams, you get off at Ocean Terminal and head for the second floor of the shopping centre, where you will find the entrance to the small information centre and ticket office. The Royal Yacht seemed very popular
but we were able to buy our tickets on site and enter immediately so I don’t think it is necessary to buy tickets in advance.
Make sure you visit the restaurant which has been created out of the to deck and offers table service including afternoon teas, sandwiches, cakes and drinks. Once again, after you are seated, you are not rushed at all.

Thank you for taking the time to share your five-star experience aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia. It is wonderful to know that you enjoyed exploring the Yacht at your own pace with our complimentary audio guide. Britannia is indeed an all-weather attraction. How lovely that you noticed how well maintained the Yacht is. Our hardworking Housekeeping and Maintenance teams will be thrilled to read your kind words. As you mentioned, Ocean Terminal, where Britannia is berthed, is easily reached by tram from Edinburgh’s city centre. A visit to our Royal Deck Tearoom to try our mouthwatering scones, cakes, sandwiches, and soups is always a great addition to a tour! A fabulous morning spent on this historic sailing yacht, the beauty of this yacht is to be seen, how it must have felt sailing along on royal visits in this extravagantly luxurious craft.
to see something with my own eyes that growing up I could only see on the television, but for a few hours I could understand why the late queen loved this yacht so much.
The entry price includes a talking guide and we felt very good value for money
We had food In the tea rooms, the service is exceptional and the food was of a very high standard

This time trip is right I don't know if it deserves the number one but it's a beautiful Attraction, both from the economic point of view £ 19.50, from the organizational point of view the audio guide and simple and exhaustive, inside you discover little gems if you want even just gossip, like the officers' game of pulling a stuffed animal against the fan blades, the rooms follow one another with logic and full of explanations even just of details
Luxury is ostentatious in a very British way
For two hours you will walk the same spaces used by the powerful of the world (Draghi also got on in 1992 at a somewhat controversial time in our economy)guests of the English monarchy

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are pleased you enjoyed the use of our complimentary audio guide to listen to the interesting stories about life on board during the 44 years of Royal service. It is great that you noticed the simple yet elegant furnishings chosen by Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip to create the feeling of a country home at sea. Had a lovely tour round!
You are given hand-held audio tour guides for free, & I would recommend those rather than using your own phone - which you can do, but I’d say headphones would be needed as if there is a group of you, it can be difficult to hear.
We got on the tram near the train station in Edinburgh City centre & the tram stops almost right outside at Ocean Terminal. The trams run regularly & are a brilliant way of getting there.
We were early compared to the time we’d booked our tickets for, but there were no issues & the staff were happy for us to go in early - which was really helpful.
The yacht itself is lovely, and very accessible for people with mobility issues.
We took about 2 hours to get round, going at a steady pace.
Highly recommend a visit!

Fantastic exhibition of a national treasure. The tour takes a couple of hours and enables one to visit a considerable amount of the vessel including Royal quarters, staff quarters as well as the royal Land Rover, Rolls Royce and motorised launch. A really interesting tour for couples and families alike. The official dining room is full of cabinets displaying many artifacts the Queen was gifted on the many visits she made aboard the Royal Yacht. A true must do if visiting Edinburgh as Leith where it is moored is only a short bus ride from the city centre.

It is a pleasure to read that you enjoyed the extensive tour of The Royal Yacht Britannia, including the State Apartments and Crew's Quarters, as well as the vehicles including the Land Rover and Rolls-Royce. Thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia to get a glimpse into the life of the royal family and learn about the capabilities of the ship and the life on board. The audio guide is included in the admission fee and available in several languages. Staff were friendly and helped many people to take photos onboard. It took 1 ¾ hours for the tour without stopping in the tearooms. For a Sunday afternoon it wasn’t too crowed despite there being 2 cruise ships in port.

Our second visit, first was fourteen years ago.
Both my teenage son and I really enjoyed the displays, the atmosphere and talking with helpful, knowledgeable staff. Everything ship-shape and Bristol fashion (unsurprisingly!) well-signposted and explained, making it a very positive experience overall. Well worth the admission fee.
As a former Royal Naval Reservist, found the maritime and Senior Service aspects of the exhibition especially interesting.
Had a very pleasant lunch in the tea room.

I came here with my partner, and we were very impressed, least not we bought our tickets in advance given we did not know how busy it would be. When we arrived we were greeted by one of your colleagues who was very welcoming and advised us before going on the Britannia there was a short exhibition which was very enjoyable as it was well laid out and plenty to see, look at and learn about and a reminder to all how much Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are missed but their duty both to the people of this country, the Commonwealth and the wider world.
Before boarding and we picked up our handsets we were met by another of your colleagues, sadly he did not engage with my partner and I but he did engage with a couple in front of us albeit with small talk and we felt this was a little rude. Once we picked up our handsets, we started our tour, and we noticed the weather had started to become a little inclement and some of the tour was outside as well as other people were also in a hurry to get inside which meant they were rushing around, and we could not always see what was being spoken about as at various points there were too many people.
As we made our way round the Yacht we learnt many things and felt a part of history and yet when we got to one point we saw one of your colleagues outside who I will be honest was not as receptive as the other people we met, I smiled at her, I said hello to her but she said nothing and if anything she looked a little bored and I think this let other people down as they also said hello and smiled but she said and did nothing in return.
At the end of the tour my partner and I went into the shop and didn’t buy anything, but we did find many of the items very expensive given what they were, and this is not the place for cheap memorabilia.
All in all we were impressed as the staff team looked very smart and we would visit again even if the area of Leith is a little undesirable and some of the shops inside the shopping centre look a little outdated and yet is served well by public transport, so much so my partner and I caught the tram from the centre of Edinburgh and this takes about 20 minutes in both directions.

After the noise and packed nature of the city centre, the Royal Yacht Britannia was a breath of fresh air (both figuratively and literally). Easy to find and access, I was greeted by friendly staff who were always available if needed. The audio tour balanced both interest with time. I was on the yacht for around 2.5 hours, including a visit to the tea room. It was a lovely way to spend an afternoon.
There was always plenty of space. At no point was there a backlog of people. I was also able to get a table in the tea room straight away. The food and drinks on offer were fresh and delicious.
The yacht being moored next to the newly developed Ocean Terminal is also very convenient for other activities such as the cinema and restaurants.
The weather was spectacular, which helped me enjoy the day even more so, but it was just a lovely trip. I fully recommend this to anyone interested in the Royal Family or in yachts in general. It is very much worth the money.

Thank you for visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia and for sharing your detailed five-star review. Your visit sounds absolutely delightful. It is great to read that you had such a positive experience, especially after the hustle and bustle of the city centre. The combination of friendly staff, a well-paced tour, and the serene atmosphere made for a perfect afternoon. Your visit to the Royal Deck Tearoom sounds a particular highlight, with both savoury and sweet treats available and made on board. It is always a lovely time when you can enjoy good food and drinks in a relaxed setting. For the information of others, Ocean Terminal, where Britannia is berthed, is undergoing redevelopment, adding new leisure and retail businesses, as well as residential spaces. As part of this redevelopment, Britannia will gain an exciting new Visitor Centre and Gift Shop.

Spent several hours aboard the Royal Yacht . Firstly the staff are so helpful and friendly, the audio guide handsets are easy to use and full of information. We visited first thing on a Wednesday morning and it wasn’t crowded , very pleasant and took our time looking at all the rooms , was really interesting seeing the different ranks of sleeping quarters- don’t know how the lower ranks managed to sleep in those beds ! Stopped at the restaurant halfway round the tour and had the most delicious fruit scone with clotted cream and jam with a pot of tea and a cappuccino, with a sea view to top it off . The scone had been freshly baked onboard and the best I have ever tasted . Again the staff in the restaurant were friendly, sociable and professional. The engine room was quite magnificent. A really enjoyable tour and well worth a visit .

How wonderful to learn that you had a great tour of The Royal Yacht Britannia. It is fantastic that you enjoyed using our complimentary audio guide handset to learn more about the Yacht's interesting Royal history. Our team takes great pride in providing a helpful and friendly experience to all our visitors; they will be delighted to know that you found them to be so. It is indeed fascinating to see the different sleeping quarters and imagine life on the Yacht for the crew of Royal Yachtsmen. Whenever the former Royal Yachtsmen return for their annual Yotties’ Week, they do speak so fondly of their time on board. A visit to the stunning Royal Deck Tearoom during your tour to delight in our delicious food and drinks while admiring the views over the Firth of Forth is a great way to re-energize while on board. Our mouthwatering fruit scones are indeed most delicious! Our Galley team will be thrilled to read your compliments. Thank you for your five-star rating and for letting others know that a visit to Britannia is worthwhile.

Thank you for your question. There are no dedicated parking spaces for motor homes at Ocean Terminal, where Britannia is berthed. The multi-story carpark has a height clearance of around 2m. If you are staying at any of the motorhome sites in or around Edinburgh, there are very good public transport links through Lothian Buses.

Bookings for the Yacht can be made online, just type in Royal Yacht in your browser. However you cannot book afternoon tea online it is on a first come first serve basis. We had a short wait but it wasn’t an issue

Can I use either Blue Light Card or Reward For Forces Veterans card to get discounted entry to Royal Yacht?
Written February 5, 2024
Hello and thank you for your question. While we do not have a discount for Blue Light Card holders, we do offer discounted tickets for the Armed Forces and veterans. The tickets cost £9.25 each and can only be purchased from our Visitor Centre upon arrival.

Hi there, I noted that serving members of HM Armed forces and veterans get discount on production of an ID card, however veterans are not issued with an ID card when they leave the forces. I would like to visit next week, but as a veteran of 24 years service in the Army only have my discharge papers which as I am coming from Suffolk I will not be carrying.

Hi, I read in a previous post that there are concessions for older visitors. Looking today at your website there doesn’t appear to be any?
Written April 11, 2023
Hello and thank you for your question. We do not offer a concession for over 60s. All tickets include the use of an audio guide and an application for an Annual Pass which provides 12 months free admission to return to visit Britannia.

Not sure that I will have time for a tour during the day on my next visit. Is it possible to view from the pier during the evening hours? Would we be able to walk alongside the dock for close viewing?
Written March 13, 2023
Hello and thank you for your question. For those wishing to view the exterior of the Royal Yacht, a great view of Britannia can be found at the Viewing Terrace within Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre.

What is best way to get to Yacht from where Oceania cruise ship docks?
Written February 25, 2023
Hello,
Thank you for your question. There are a number of cruise ship docking/tender locations on Edinburgh's coast therefore it would depend on where your ship is coming in.
