About
Established in 2019, Holyrood Distillery is an exciting new attraction located in the centre of Edinburgh as the first working single malt distillery in the city for almost a century. We are delighted to have welcomed over 40,000 visitors over the last year. With the opportunity to revive Edinburgh’s rich distilling heritage, we do so with experimentation and innovation at the forefront of our vision, as well as a steadfast commitment to our local community. Unconstrained by tradition, we have set ourselves apart as a distinctly different venue, who seek to push the boundaries of what it means to be a modern producer of scotch whisky. Our distillery Brand Home consists of 4 key spaces which make up the experience. Our visitor route includes our welcome room, spirits lab, still room, and cask room - through which guests are guided through alongside a live guide. We also have a small indoor bar and tasting room, plus a destination gift and spirits shop.

Neighborhood: Southside & Holyrood
Many of Edinburgh’s student hangouts gather around university buildings in Southside, the sort of neighborhood that supports a long string of second-hand shops and eateries serving ethnic food for just a few pounds. In August the student population is replaced by vast numbers of boisterous visitors here for the Fringe, Edinburgh’s world-class comedy and arts festival which headquarters itself here. Flanking Southside are two great parks. The Meadows is a vast flat and sporty space where football, rugby, tennis, cricket, croquet, and golf often all take place side by side. Kids in its big playgrounds add to the joyful noise. Far bigger and much wilder, Holyrood Park extends to the east and provides a real hike up Arthur’s Seat, but the district is best known as the site of Scotland’s Parliament and its premier Royal Palace—and their steady stream of sightseers.

    Aussie girl is fantastic!
Had a fantastic tour by the Aussie girl (missed her name). She was so captivating and informative. Loved how you get to see both gin & whisky processes. Being that little smaller and more bespoke meant it was personal and the rooms were lovely too!

    Great Gin Tour & Tasking
We had a really great Gin Tour at Holyrood Distillery! First we got a cocktail and sat down listening to Bryce telling us all about the history of Gin which was interesting en greatly told. Then we went to the distillery, learned about the proces of making Gin and started the tasting, but also creating combinations and making a cocktail. Absolute recommendation!

    A Ginuine experience !
I did the Height of Arrows gin tasting experience, which was outstanding ! Our guide, Georgia, was really interested about Gin and gave us many information (and some funny stories as well) ! The tasting was really interesting, with Holyrood's gins being really different from mainstream gins you may taste ! Now looking forward to taste their whisky when it'll come out !
Hi there, Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review for your recent tour with us - we are delighted to hear that you enjoyed the Height of Arrows experience! We will be sure to pass on your lovely words to Georgia, and we hope that you enjoy the whisky when it comes! Kind regards Team HD

    Excellent tour with excellent tasting
We had the Distillery tour with Neil as our host. He was able to really bring to live the history of whisky and the current activities of the Holyrood Distillery. It was impressive to see the distillery. We tasted different products along the way, but the real first matured whisky will be presented in October (after 4 years). Afterwards, we had 4 drinks (included in the package we chose) with great view of the impressive hill behind the distillery

    Just went tasting
We didn't take the tour, because we have toured several distilleries around the Highlands before. But we did go for a taste of Whiskey and Gin. It was nice, well done, well served and explained. And respect to the staff who stayed so calm despite the family with small kids, who took stuff and threw it to the floor. The kids did, that is :-)

    A great Distillery in Edinburgh
Amazing Distillery tour with Stewart, very knowledgeable and funny. The new makes were new to me and I enjoyed all the different flavors. Learned lots of new things (like the variety of yeast and how it changes the flavor) which is always refreshing. Definitely a must if you love Whiskey and Gin!

    Information and amusing tour.
Stewart our guide was very informative and funny, easily capable of stand up comedy! Despite having been on many tours we still learned a lot and the passion for making whisky came across well. It was also great to see visitors from across the world. Oh, and it was great to taste the amazing whisky too.

We decided on picking Holyrood because it had the combination of whiskey and gin tour. It was a great price for a double tour and our tour guide was extremely lovely and we had the opportunity to meet the team as they were working on the premises that day. The tour included a whiskey tasting, gin tasting and gin liqueur which was great for £14. The distillery is extremely modern as it’s new and their smell testing room is very interactive and good for testing your sense of smell and memory. Would highly recommend visiting and giving the distillery a chance.

If your on a short break in Edinburgh this is the distillery to visit as very close to centre. Due to it being a new distillery it was very scripted throughout the tour. The samples of whiskey are still young so may not be to everyone’s taste.

If you want the proper distillery experience you will have to book a excursion further afield.

Only just opened and I have to say they really have done a great job, the shop is lovely the bar is great but what makes this place stand out is the tour. Douglas was absolutely brilliant, informative and interesting and really loving what he does which showed. This really is a must do in the best and most interesting city in the world.

Would throughly recommend this tour to others. Our tour guide Stuart (Piney) was fun and informative and very good at his job. We purchased an Itison voucher which we upgraded to include a gin or whisky flight at the end of the tour and it was great value. You can sit and relax and enjoy your drinks in the bar and there is a shop on the way out where you can purchase bottles and if you sign up to their website you receive 10% discount so a great deal.

Tours of any sort of alcohol product can always be really busy and kind of drag. However, this place makes it feel quite personal and the hour just disappears. The tour guides are full of knowledge and quirky personalities which makes it that little bit more enjoyable. The place is brand new so feels really modern and fresh. Great way to kill an hour or so and drink some freebies.

The tour was amazing! Neal was a great guide and had a wealth of knowledge regarding the process of creating different spirits. I highly recommend getting the enhanced tasting experience cause you’ll get a nice sample of their drinks at the end, which tasted amazing. Definitely stop by here if you’re visiting Edinburgh

If I could give 6 stars, I would! Stuart led the tour brilliantly, with just the right blend of drinks knowledge and personal anecdotes. We were celebrating my Dad's 90th birthday, and he loved it. Got the whole weekend off to a terrific start. Many thanks.

I booked the enhanced gin and Whisky tour at the last minute. Got there early and met Neal, tour guide, and started tasting some product and had a great conversation with Neal. He took us through the tour - lots of samples and very informational. I opted for the enhanced tour which consisted of a flight of four drinks they make with their spirits. Overall a great tour and a great time.

A work trip with colleagues gave us some new insights into the production of gin and whisky. Located in a refurbished engine shed, it showcases one of the many things that Edinburgh does well in repurposing historical buildings. Stuart Mr Piney our guide is clearly passionate about his work but kept things light with his sense of humour, even if he did over do the puns a bit. It is a good visitor experience for people who visit Scotland and would like an introduction to the process of making and producing whisky and gin.
