Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Whitehorse Close takes its name from the White Horse Inn, which was one of the best known coaching inns in Edinburgh, before it closed in the late 18th century.
Nowadays the close is home to a collection of beautiful domestic dwellings and is possibly the most attractive and most photographed close in the city. Although the immediate feeling is that you are stepping back in time here, the fact is that the houses here are a tad more modern than first glimpses suggest as the close was heavily restored in the 1960s, enhancing the typically Scottish features such as crow-stepped gables, forestairs and pantiled roofs.
Whereas the resulting effect was described by one architectural historian as “…so blatantly fake that it can be acquitted of any intention to deceive”, the fact is that to the ordinary punter, the close is very attractive indeed and, in my opinion, well worth a look.

Whitehouse close is a charming area. But looks like its private homes. But well worth a look around.

I spent four days at 9 Whitehorse Close. The flat is lovely, well situated, spacious, clean, and well maintained. The kitchen had a washer and the dryer was in the closet. The bathroom was well appointed too. I did have a frustrating time with the landlord.
Prior to booking (we were coming from overseas), I had a couple of questions and had to email him multiple times (like 3-4) to get a basic answer. He also told me that the flat included parking. He neglected to mention that the parking was off site, down the road. So, when we got there, we were driving round and round looking for the parking, which I wrongly assumed was at Whitehorse Close. He forgot to mention that Whitehorse is not accessible by car. We double parked at a location and got into the flat. Alas, still no parking instructions. I found a number and gave him a ring. Luckily it was a cell phone and he answered; he then gave me the instructions on where to go. It wasted a lot of our time trying to resolve the parking issue, when it would have been so simple for him to just communicate.
Upon leaving, we had a security deposit with him. Can't remember the exact number, but I think it was about 150 pounds we had paid through paypal. He assured me that the security deposit would be refunded to our account within 2-3 days after checkout. I was still visiting the country for a week or so more, so by the time I got back to the US, we had been gone from the Whitehorse flat for nearly 1 1/2 weeks. Upon checking my paypal, there was no credit.
I emailed the landlord a couple of times, and he assured me that he would credit it the next day. I heard this a couple of times through email, and finally, after 3 weeks of no credit, and no more communication from the landlord, I got fed up and filed a complaint through paypal. Paypal ended up suspending all the funds from him during the investigation (of 400 pounds or so). Of course, I got an email back from him that day and he was mad. I did not request for paypal to suspend all his funds; I just reported the lack of security deposit refund of $150. He apparently had to jump through some hoops. Of course the security deposit was quickly credited back to me.
I feel that this landlord, although nice, is not very professional in the way he runs his rental flat. At least in regards to the interactions he has with his tenants. I would rent from him again though, because I have a feeling he would refund me very quickly. He really needs to work on his communication skills with his tenants, which is ironic, because I believe he is a solicitor.

Tourists take this for the real thing, but its a tidy-up and mostly a reconstruction. Atmosphere lacking... better go to wynds behind City Museum/Huntly house

I wasn't looking for this place but as I was walking past it flashed up as a site on the TA app, so stuck my down there to have a look.
As closes go it is pretty wide and big, initally I was wondering what made this close more stand out than others...it was the Royal Mews apparently.

I almost didn't want to write a review for this because the people who live here must hate the tourists flocking into their tiny courtyard and I do not want to be the cause of more people coming to disturb their peace! It's just a cute , quiet courtyard - excellent for a picture and then quietly depart. If I lived in old town Edinburgh - this is where I'd want to be!

Bumped into this enclosed courtyard off the Canongate, at the foot of the Royal Mile. The small, white houses all around it, some with pretty, handmade decorations, the silence away from the madding tourist crowds... a piece of heaven.
