The tour was free, but at the end I gave a big fat tip because I loved it so much! David was an exceptionally good tour guide, keeping a manageable pace yet moving our big group along nicely, and giving us all sorts of fascinating tidbits as we wound our way through the city. I'm so happy I discovered Sandemans... More

Not my first time using sandemans and for sure won't be my last. Did all 4 of their tours , free walking, castle, haunted tour and pub crawl. My favorite way to learn and make fiends whenever I travel alone. All 4 tour guides were funny and informative. Highly recommend Hamlin, Greg, Colin, and Luca for all your touring needs.

Luca made the tour fun and engaging- his knowledge and love for the city was clearly demonstrated in how he delivered the tales about Edinburgh. His clearly masters the art of story-telling!

I've done an Edinburgh Sandemans walking tour in the past and so was worried this might be rehashing the same stories, but I was wrong! Jen was great fun, getting everyone to chat with each other, paced the tour fabulously - and charismatic to boot. Her stories and sense of fun helped ward off the icy numbness of February edinburgh... More

We went on the Sandemans Free Walking Tour on Saturday 13 February. Our Guide Greg produced a magnificent performance telling the tales of old Edinburgh. The weather was awful (heavy snow, freezing wind) and we lost a few of our party at the half way coffee but we stuck with it due to our Leader. He gave it his all;... More

A fantastic 2 1/2 hour walk around historic sites in Edinburgh with a super enthusiastic tour guide, Euan, who made it so much more worthwhile, even in the blistering cold! Definitely recommend and remember to bring cash! These tour guides do it voluntarily which I couldn't believe- wish I had brought some with me to tip!!

This tour was brilliant and would highly recommend to anyone. Greg, our tour guide, was funny, informative and clearly demonstrated his passion for the city. The tour was 2.5 hours long but felt much shorter as so much to do, see and listen too. Perfect blend of sight seeing and history portrayed in a fun, engaging way. Thank you Greg!

I was in Edinburgh over New Years and booked to do a walking tour. Luckily I was put into Jen's group (on NYE-sorry for the late review!) and that's where the fun began! Not only was Jen's knowledge outstounding, she was truly one of the funniest and most engaging people I've ever met. It was really clear that she loves... More

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
