Great introduction to an incredible city! Greg's tour was interesting, informative and really entertaining. Greg brought a genuine Scottish flare and friendly attitude. He made point to be exceptionally approachable. Consistently went the extra mile -- even helped us find a great place to eat for dinner. We were so enthralled with his tour, we barely noticed the rain. Tip... More

I did 3 tours. Free Tour and Palace Tour with Borja and DarkSide Tour with Pascual. Both guys were well prepared and each one had a very personal funny way to tell the stories of Edinburgh. Money and time well spent.

We did the free tour with Paula and was NOT disappointed! She was amazing! Super informative, kept the whole tour interesting (seriously it went by so quick), kept us laughing through the whole thing, and was so knowledgeable. I would recommend the tour to anyone, and hope you get Paula! 😊

I've been in many free guided tours all over Europe and I can say this tour with Pascual has been one of my favourites so far. He's a very engaging guide and makes you fall in love with Edinburgh's history and streets. Definitely would recommend!

We used Sandemans Free Walking in Copenhagen a year ago and it was such a good experience that we had no problem booking a morning tour with them for our stop in Edinburgh. Our group of 30 was led by David (not Australian) and he might have been the best guide we have ever had. We do a lot of... More

Thank you Greg for a fantastic and fun tour of Edinburgh! We enjoyed your sense of humor, voice that could boom above the city noise, and personal interest that you took in your group members. Well done!!

We had Jen for the free walking tour around Edinburgh and liked her so much, we payed for the Castle Tour through Sandeman later that day. She was very knowledgeable and gave us a ton of historical stories about the places we were seeing. She was funny and interesting. While the tour lasted 2.5 hours, there was not actually that... We did the free walking tour with Australian Dave and the castle tour with Jen (not a free tour). Both guides were amazing, entertaining, and patient. We highly recommend both tours. The check-in experience and start of the tours are chaotic -- a bunch of people standing on the street trying to understand the process. The people checking in guests... More

We had Greg (the ginger one) as our tour guide and he was funny, informative, and entertaining plus the tour was free (although we did tip)! Definitely recommend.

Staying in Old Town

Neighborhood Profile
Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.
