The area
Neighborhood: Broughton & Calton
Lying where grandiose New Town townhouses give way to malls and utilitarian housing, Broughton and Calton have long been transitional neighborhoods with a mixed identity. It’s here that Edinburgh’s gay village found a home in the 1980s. But gay culture is anything but overt along bustling epicenter Broughton Street; even if polished pubs, hip bistros, smart delis and art galleries all speak of affluent good taste. The top of Leith Walk is more ragged. This major thoroughfare boasts a famously gritty gay club, as well as a strip of good Indian restaurants. Regal Georgian and Victorian townhouses preside over largely deserted streets in Calton, where only the occasional restaurant or hotel brings much life. Even so, a steady trickle of idlers and picnickers pass by to climb Calton Hill for its wide-open lawns, wonderful city views, and curious monuments – an Athenian-style temple among them.

If the statue has been put away until the tram system is complete then none of us born in the last century will live long enough to see it restored. Even Sherlock Holmes would fail to solve the mystery of how a single line tram system in a showpiece capital city could run so spectacularly over-time and over-budget. It makes you wonder how they could manage independence if they can't even manage 12 miles of track.

Impossible to find this statue
Jun 2019 • Couples
After a lot of searching for this statue, I realized I wasn't going to find it on my own. I went to an iScotland Tourist center to get more information. I found out that the statue is in a city warehouse tucked away under a duvet. Apparently the statue was removed for the construction of their tram system. Once construction is completed city officials plan on putting the statue back on display.

Everyone loves Sherlock Holmes

It was hard to find. It is located not far from York Place. But well worth it once I found it. 5 stars and one of my favorites.

It was cool to take a picture with this statue of Sherlock Holmes. It makes me sad that more great stories and characters aren't in the public domain for reinterpretation. Sherlock Holmes has been foundational for modern mystery literature and fiction in general.

Had to act like Sherlock to locate the statue

I was determined to see this statue but had to act like Sherlock while trying to locate it. Even following the directions to the location, I found it a tad tricky to spot, however if you look for the Conan Doyle pub on York Place it is directly across the road from it.

Definitely worth a visit and photo opportunity for a fan.

If you go to look for the statue, you will be on the lookout of a bit....

Unfortunately, their doing a bit of road work and have either moved him or taken him down.

We were a little disappointed to not at least see the statue... but not a big deal to miss it. Wanted to pass along the information of him missing.

Great statue

Designed in the stereotypical fashion of a detective with deerskin outfit, pipe and magnifying glass. This statue is situated opposite the building were Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born, this statue is well worth a visit for Sherlock Holmes fans.

The statute gets lost among the parking lot and shrubbery so keep an eye out of it. It is a must see while in Edinburgh.
