Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Bakehouse Close is one of 80 closes that fall off the Royal Mile. Bakehouse Close is located in Canongate, next to The Museum of Edinburgh and across the street from New Calton Burial Ground. The long tunnel archway that you walk through to reach the close was established in 1570 and was a joining of three houses.Huntly House, which was a mansion on the East Side of the close, is now the Museum of Edinburgh. In the 1830s Acheson House attracted the attention for the reason of The Cock and Trumpet Pub located just off Bakehouse Close. The Cock and Trumpet did their business during night, so like many of the closes on the Royal Mile, Bakehouse Close has an own interesting history. The old Acheson family crest can still be viewed above the doorway of the courtyard currently occupied by the Edinburgh World Heritage organization.Stepping inside the close, the courtyard containing the Cock and Trumpet is to your left. Bakehouse Close was named for the bakers that lived here. This historic close leads you to Holyrood Road, which leads onto the Holyrood Palace and Park. Bakehouse Close is one of the best-preserved examples of old Edinburgh. It is also one of the ''Outlander'' film locations in Edinburgh. Another very spectacular place of the Royal Mile. You must discover it.

A must for Outlander fans, this is where the print shop scene from season 3 was filmed. Bakehouse close is located next to the museum of Edinburgh, which makes it easy to find. You can walk up the stairs, lots of photo opportunities. You'll probably get to chat with other Outlander fans too.

This should be the exteriors for the printshop scene in Outlander, and you almost feel like being there....
It's a nice close, almost in the end of the Royal mile, in the Hollyrood end.
You have to know it's here, Edinburgh city does not use the force of the series to please the tourists and fans...So you still don't see anything related in the town.
But you will know when you see it!!

The archway to this close dates from 1570 and although there is nothing particularly spectacular about the buildings within, they provide a good feeling of a small residential and business community from times past. As you might expect from the name, a baker and his family once lived and traded here and there was also a pub called the Cock and Trumpet. More up to date, and on the visit list for avid Outlander fans, this close was used for filming Clare’s visit to a printer’s shop.

As an outlander fan, its a must whilst in the city. Easy to find, just off the Royal Mile / Cannongate end , its free. Amazing that the owners don't make more of it

I stumbled across the location where they filmed the scene where Claire goes into the print shop. There isn't much there but cool to see. Just steps from a main street with lots of shops. We walked to it after our tour of Holyrood Castle.

This was really fun, since I'm a huge Outlander Fan! Loved the history of the street. We stopped at a small cafe nearby to enjoy the beauty of the area.

Once you go through the archway and tunnel and enter Bakehouse Close off the Royal Mile, you feel as if you have stepped into the past. Although there are a couple modern signs, such as electric lights and concrete, you can easily imagine yourself here two hundred years ago. If you are an Outlander fan, you will recognize this close as the site of Jamie's A. Malcolm print shop. If you look closely on the steps that portrayed the stairs that Clair climbed up to the print shop, you will notice on the bottom stair, a little bit of the plaster that the Outlander crew used to cover the steps and make them look stone is still there..
