Neighborhood: Princes Street and Gardens
Glaswegians tease Edinburghers that their High Street is only half one, since buildings only line one side. But what they don’t say is how extraordinary the views are from Princes Street as a result. From here you look onto expansive and decorative public gardens beneath the mighty basalt cliffs on which Edinburgh’s Castle stands proud above the rest of the dramatic old town skyline. Yet many of those on Princes Street look the other way, as they’re concerned with chain store shopping or catching the tram or a train at main train station Waverley. But it’s not all utility here; the Scottish National Gallery rewards purposeless wandering, and December’s huge winter market in the gardens begins a season of revelry which ends with Hogmanay, Britain’s largest New Year’s street party.

- Fiona5 contributionsAmazing Experience and Staff! My friends and I pre-booked and this was a great experience. The staff were very friendly and informative, made us feel comfortable during our visit. They also kindly made sure everyone got a turn with the various chihuahuas, would recommend this experience to everyone and would go again. Also very COVID secure, hand gels and staff wore masks so I felt safe during my visit.Visited August 2020Written August 25, 2020
- ClÃona Deeds10 contributionsA must-do for animal lovers in EdinburghThe chihuahua cafe was our highlight of our trip to Edinburgh. The doggies are so well looked after and so happy to snuggle up to you. The cakes/drinks were a lovely added bonus too! We would definitely recommend this experience to any animal lovers and cant wait to come back and see the girls again. (Ps- i would really recommend the owners get this experience on Airbnb (where we found all our other Edi experiences), we only found the cafe by chance but definitely would have booked if we found this in advance!)Visited July 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten July 12, 2021
- Dream819972Greenock, United Kingdom46 contributionsA short activity you cannot leave out on your visit to Edinburgh! The Chihuahua cafe came up on my Instagram feed one day and I fell in love with the whole idea immediately! We booked a 2.30pm time slot online, and enjoyed having cake and coffee while the little dogs cosied up to everyone. The staff are so sweet and you can tell they care so so so much about the dogs. We got to pet almost all of them, and Elsa quickly picked us as her favourites and spent the entire session snuggled up on my boyfriends knee! As a huge animal lover, I really admire how much respect the staff give the dogs - the Chihuahuas get to choose who they cuddle and can leave you if they want to move on to something/someone else. I heard staff say they get plenty of breaks, too, which is great. I recommend for families, couples, friends, and anyone who likes a chill setting with some cute furry friends. Will definitely come back here!Visited April 2022Written April 8, 2022
- Aaron J1 contributionRefused entry despite being on time. Very poor service.Very poor experience with the Edinburgh Chihuahua Cafe this weekend. We arrived promptly at 12 on the dot to be told that we had missed our slot to enter the cafe. We called them at 3 minutes past 12 to ask about whether we could be allowed in, however we were refused entry. Our fee will not be refunded and I feel very let down. We had commuted quite far into Edinburgh to attend the cafe for a birthday and despite being on time, we were not allowed in. Complete waste of money and time and very poor service.Visited December 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten December 3, 2022
- Ethian W2 contributionsBrilliant experienceHaving never been to a cat cafe nevermind a chihuahua cafe I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but this was a great experience and we felt completely relaxed the entire time. The dogs themselves are adorable and looked after extremely well by the staff and you can tell they care so much about the dogs and enjoy what they do. The whole visit was very well organised and the coffee and cake was lovely as well. Would definitely recommend to anyone who loves dogsVisited July 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten July 31, 2021
- Ilana K5 contributionsHappy pupsI've been to a cat café before but a dog café was a first! Me and my boyfriend went here on a trip to Edinburgh and were very impressed. They give you some guidelines on how to behave within the café which I'm sure a lot of visitors need! They sit you down within the café and set you up with a blanket which the dogs recognise as safe to sit on. The dogs then come out and can pick where to sit and who to interact with. The staff do relocate the dogs occasionally if a group of people are getting all the love! However, the dogs were fine with this. There was one dog (the youngest and newest to the group) who was quite unsettled, and anxious, but they allowed her to do her own thing and didn't push her to interact with people. The staff seemed really clued up on the dogs and their behaviour which was nice to see. As someone who works in animal rescue with dogs and very clued up on dog behaviour, the dogs all seemed very happy and used to the routine they have. I was impressed with how well it was all run :) Gorgeous happy little dogs and I absolutely loved them all!Visited June 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten June 17, 2021
- Katherine B2 contributionsFun but a bit overpricedThis was a fun, unique experience that I enjoyed but I wouldn’t go again. £10 is a lot of money for less than an hour to spend here and on top of that you have to pay for overpriced drinks and cake. The dogs are lovely and it was great to have a chance to cuddle them, however the staff are very overprotective to the point of overbearing and patronising. I felt a bit like a school child having to ask to go to the toilet etc. It made me a bit uncomfortable as I felt we were going to get in trouble if we did anything wrong. It was an interesting experience and I’m glad I went, however I think the staff could be a bit more welcoming and the experience made cheaper.Visited February 2020Traveled with friendsWritten February 25, 2020
- ThomasUnited Kingdom1 contributionWonderfulWe were here on Saturday and had a wonderful time. We were greeted by Findlay at the front door and given a laminated card with some info on what to expect when we went inside. Lots of comfy places to choose from once we were inside and the dogs were absolutely adorable in their little halloween costumes. We got to feed the dogs little biscuits which made them sleepy - it was so cute watching them all curl up and nod off after their food. Overall it was a lovely experience. We would have stayed longer if we could have. We were very-well taken care of and I'd like to specifically thank Findlay for his hospitality and for checking in on us and sharing little bits of trivia about each of the dogs. It made the whole experience even more special.Visited October 2020Written November 1, 2020

I first visited the cafe as I was scared of dogs, however after a few visits, I can say they have helped me overcome my fear. The chihuahuas have lovely temperaments and are very sweet. The set up is great and very well organised. Loved every visit here.Visited August 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten October 2, 2020
- Isabella FGreater London, United Kingdom90 contributionsBeautiful dogsOn arrival, we left our bags in a cupboard so we didn't get any hairs on our belongings which is good for those who mind about that sort of thing. We were each given a different blanket to put on our legs to also protect our clothes. When the dogs came in, the dogs chose their places and they pretty much slept the whole time on peoples laps and didn't move around a lot. I would have liked to interact with a few of the other dogs too but they stuck in the same places the whole time. When the session was over, the dogs automatically just jumped and ran into another room which was actually quite freaky how trained they were. I had the most delicious biscoff latte - I would go again just to drink this! The paw shaped ice cubes were a really nice touch too.Visited August 2021Written August 5, 2021

This is a phenomenal little experience, great dogs and allergy options are surprisingly broad and delicious. Came with two friends who are gluten/dairy intolerant and there was no issue at all. You are clearly informed about the dogs as well so there's no risk of upsetting them, they are clearly incredibly comfortable and utterly adorable. At one point I was harbouring either 5 or 6 dogs on my lap in a state I can only call nirvana. Definitely recommend for dog lovers of all kinds

The Chihuahua Cafe is a lovely concept & the dogs are all lovely, clearly well cared for. The tea & brownie was great. Served in a teapot & cute china cup & saucer.
But I found 1 staff member to be quite rude, patronising & made me feel uncomfortable. The place has rules which you have to abide by which is understandable. Each guest is asked sit on a sofa upright, a blanket is put on your lap for the dogs. I was there with my 6 year old daughter who loves animals & we have 2 dogs ourselves. I felt 1 staff member was acting over protective towards the dogs & patronising guests telling them how to pet/feed treats. I went to pet a dog that jumped up on my lap as I would pet any other dog. I was told not to put my arm over her as it made her feel scared & enclosed. My daughter dropped a treat on the blanket. They give each group a cup of treats. The dog tried to retrieve it & she was accused of teasing the dog?!. I was then told to hurry up with the treats as I was holding up the session?! A man stood up to get his phone & was practically shouted at by a staff member. He was told he didn't follow the rules & needed to ask permission to get up, how the dogs are little creatures & easily scared?!
It reminded me of being back at school with a strict teacher barking orders. Too many do's & don'ts which meant it was not a relaxing atmosphere.
The dogs are absolutely brilliant but I think they'd be better being house pets than in a petting environment with an over protective owner.
I'm glad we experienced it but don't think I'd return again.
I fully understand any establishment with live animals needs rules in place for guests & animals but personally I felt the staff were going over the score to the point you were scared to breathe or move in case that upset the dog's.

Hi gizmo75luca
We are glad to hear you liked our concept but very sorry your experience was spoiled for you.
We do have rules in place to keep the dogs happy but these rules should never feel overbearing and this is not how we train staff.
I have identified the session you attended and your feedback has been helpful in highlighting behaviours and better ways of working going forward for the individual you have mentioned.
Thank you for your valuable insights in to our customer journey and once again apologies that your experience was spoilt. I hope the dogs were still fun to meet!

We visited the Chihuahua Café as a treat for my daughter's 5th birthday as she is dog daft. The staff were so friendly and accommodating, making sure to explain the importance of remaining calm so as not to startle the dogs. I liked that someone came to give this advice to everyone whilst we queued as it allowed us to spend our 50 minutes with the cute chihuahuas, and for us to make sure that our daughter was as calm and quiet as possible going in. The dogs are allowed to roam free but are very friendly and keen to come up for belly rubs and scratches. Our little girl was particularly taken with Cleopatra, who was content to sit between us and give her hand little kisses. The staff were fantastic and even asked my daughter which chihuahua was her favourite so that she could be brought over, although Faery was comfiest on my husband's lap! We paid for a birthday gift bag which contained a mug, magnet and card from the chihuahuas. My little girl loved it! It was such a lovely experience. All of the chihuahuas are adorable and the cakes, tea and coffee were delicious. Thank you for being so patient with a very excited 5-year-old. 💜
