Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- angela m32 contributionsNormally a great station for disabled people.Only fave a 5 star due to the lovely Laura from the travel desk. Normally this is a brilliant station for disabled people but after a traumatic journey yet again on the aweful avanti west coast line, no one was there to meet me with a wheelchair. I walked a little way with my son and then my crutches slipped on an oily concourse amd almost went over but my son caught me, unfortunatelyi twisted my amkle amd ita like a balloon today. I had booked passenger assist and this wouldn't have happened had they been there. So, Laura from the travel desk, you were my actual hero yesterday, thank you 10 times over.Visited October 2023Traveled with familyWritten October 23, 2023
- spc354593 contributionsDon't count on storing luggage at Edinburgh Waverly StationSigns were not very helpful and late announcement of departure platform for the train to Aberdeen, and another last minute change on top of that caused quite a scramble. Apparently reservations mean nothing on Scotrail!! However the biggest surprise, and an expensive one, was the fact that the left luggage (bag storage) at the station only accepted small carry-on size items and would not take our large bags. Resulted in us having to store our bags at the "Luggage Store" selling luggage in the adjacent Waverly Mall for UKP 12 /per bag/2 hours. That was one time that I did not smile at the "pun."Visited November 2023Traveled soloWritten November 30, 2023
- Irene R2 contributionsNot the day out plannedTook a trip to Edinburgh and planned a trip to the Xmas market. However market was mobbed (thats another story) Then went to Camera Obscura which was amazing. Kids loved it. Had something to eat and headed back to station. Ten minutes before train due there was an announcement to say we had to evacuate and make our way to nearest exit. We came out on Princes Street. However no one from the station was at the exit and people were still heading in.Decided to take my grandchidren home on the bus.Cannot find anything online to say why there was an evacuationVisited December 2023Traveled with familyWritten December 17, 2023

- alibatty🦇Dundee, United Kingdom19,317 contributionsBritain’s 2nd Largest Train Station.Haven’t been here for years - so obviously noticed a lot of changes. Much modernisation and streamlining has taken place in Britain’s 2nd largest station ( 25 acres) but somehow it seems to have lost a bit of its traditional character ( or maybe I’m just being nostalgic) . It can seem slightly overwhelming as it’s so big and busy - with 18 platforms in use , and apparently approximately 30,000 people passing through each day - but it’s airy, clean and efficient , with a varied section of shops and cafes .Visited March 2024Traveled soloWritten March 2, 2024
- GlennA946Whitehaven, United Kingdom264 contributionsScotland's biggest railway stationEdinburgh Waverley is Scotland's biggest railway station, if not one of the biggest in Britain, and has 20 platforms that serve most major destinations across the country. What I do like is it's more than a railway station, with a shopping mall above that contains clothes, souvenit and music shops, a range of food outlets and a pub. Also the main ticket hall with its restored Victorain atrium is quite grand. Only gripes I had was having to pass through very crowded ticket barriers, my ticket had been checked on the train, so why have the barriers, and there were queues for the toilets, which were too small for such a big station. Otherwise Waverley is a credit to Scotland's capital city and is worth a visit not just to catch a train.Visited July 2024Traveled soloWritten July 8, 2024

We have traveled from this station, but on this day we used it as a place to walk through from the lower old city up to Princes Street. Lots of elevators and escalators to help one out. Lots of stores and cafes where you can buy things for your trip. Lots of passengers headed somewhere.Visited July 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten July 22, 2024

I was on the fence trying to give this a Terrible rating instead of Poor but since it is a nice station I gave it a Poor.
There are no lockers available and you are stuck with a company that rips you off at rates hard to find anywhere else...not even in London where you pay about 6 pounds for up to 24 hours storage.
Here you will be paying £7.50 per item (not per locker) for the first 3 hours, then 12.50 for up to 24 hours and increasing 7.50 after 24 hours on top of that. So if you want to store 2 pieces for 4 hours like was they take £25.00...yes you are reading correctly.
Plan or negotiate with your hotel/Airbnb to leave luggage there instead of coming here. This should be your last choice.

Be warned the station facilities are very poor & staff in my experience were not helpful. I think done of this is due to building work/refurbishment which hopefully may result in improvements.
Most important thing to be aware of is that if you are catching the sleeper train back to London, there is absolutely nothing open at all. Bring water, food, drinks as you can’t buy anything - there is not even a drinks vending machine. I found this unbelievable - not really sure how it functions as a station on this basis.
Our experience was already made worse by the fact the first class lounge had shut for refurbishment. Again, unclear really why this could not be reprovided. It’s closed for six weeks from 5/9/21 apparently.
Temporary toilets were actually fine & well signposted - gentleman supervising entry to them was friendly and assume he also ensures they stay clean as they were in good condition.
Signage otherwise appalling and very hard to navigate unless you know where you are going.
Also you cannot board the sleeper train an hour before as you can in super organised London Euston so be warned the return experience is not great.

Big and busy. Plan ahead. Some of the platforms are not adjacent to the main central part of the station so have plenty of time. Info boards etc are excellent and there are lifts and escalators for mobility impaired folk. The toilets are now free you will be glad to hear.

I arrived at the platform 20 minutes early and there were 6 other people waiting for a train which never came. We went to the ‘helpdesk’ and ticket purchase area. The woman behind the desk offered no apology at any point and eventually found out it was because the train left from a different platform but the board hadn’t been changed. She insisted staff had been down there informing passengers but considering we were not the only ones and were 20 early this obviously hadn’t happened. Another woman had come over to suggest that maybe the train had been further down the platform and we hadn’t seen it... as if we were either blind or stupid. They then said their was nothing they could do (despite the fact their job is to give tickets) and said they could not print us one. We had to get a later train at the chance of a fine because staff hadn’t done their job and were not only unhelpful but rude and quite frankly insulting. I hope I never have to deal with those staff members again and something is done.

Awful signposting for the platforms. Despoite arriving at the station with plenty of time to spare, we came soooo close to missing our train from Paltform 6 due to incorrect then missing signposting. I have never had a train guard shout "RUN!" at me before now.
One sign tells you to go upstairs, there is no next sign until you see the platform below you. Down in the handy lift, only to be met by a barrier not allowing you through. Quickly realise that we have to double-back, to find the ticket barriers manned by a bored young lad who vaguely waves us in the right direction. The train guard has his whistle in his mouth when he sees us running!

Terrible experience at Waverley Station on 3 November 2021 after getting off the bus from the airport which had been delayed due to ridiculous road calming blockages. I could have missed my train due to poor signage and confused messaging - is this a railway station or a shopping mall? Luckily I made the right choices (ie, I followed the sign for trains to Glasgow (I was travelling to Newcastle) and at last found the concourse). I had also already found out which platform I was leaving from on the Internet as there were no obvious info boards at any part of my horrendous journey through the mall/station. I saw no staff until I was actually on the platform even though my journey was around 3.30pm on a midweek day. I have travelled frequently to and from this station in the past and am baffled as to why I was unable to find the actual station in amongst all the retail outlets

This review is about the fantastic journey we had from Edinburgh to Durham with. What a difference in service since going back into state ownership. Plenty of staff and fast efficient service. We traveled from Oban to Edinburgh with Scotrail which has deteriorated so much that one hopes that the return to Scottish Gov control will lead to better times. They used to tell us that private companies are better at running these services, present evidence strongly refutes this.
Maybe, we will return to the golden age of British Rail!!😂🇬🇧

Arriving from Glasgow last Thursday, I saw on the destination display that all trains to Kings Cross from 3pm were delayed except my 4.30 which was still showing as being on time. Suspicious, I went to the information kiosk to politely ask what the problem was. The guy was useless and obnoxious. He glared at me and asked what train I was on. Told him and he said it’s up on the display as on time, so it’s on time. I was told that I knew as much as he did. No explanation as to the cause of the problem.
Gave up at that point and decided to have a walk round the corner where an Azuma train was waiting and the representative said that it was the 4.00pm to Kings Cross and I was welcome to get on board as it was leaving in 5 minutes, which It did.
Very few people on the train since passengers were obviously still hanging around the station waiting for information. I subsequently found out that there had been an incident near Darlington and the line was temporarily closed with nothing getting through to Scotland until early evening.
I also subsequently found out that my 16.30 was indeed cancelled. Hopeless.

This is a really nice train station. The station is always clean, it's both modern and historic at the same time. A large station with surprisingly beautiful architecture. A great hub ideally situated in the city centre with easy access for buses and trams going around the wider environments. The service at the checkout was very nice and helpful. It is impossible to get lost there, the platforms are very well marked. A big plus is the small shopping center near the station.

We will be take the airport train from London to the wave fly train station.Howe do we connect with the fast express train to Edinburgh ? Is it close to walk to this fast speed train or is it in a different location
Also we will be going in 2023 May ,and wondering if we can buy tickets to Edinburg on fast train when we arrive from airport in the morning or should we book online?
Sincerely
Marilyn

From Heathrow there are two main rail routes to central London, Elizabeth line (cheaper) and Heathrow Express (cheaper if booked on line). You then need to take the tube to King's Cross for Edinburgh trains. Lumo are the cheaper option, LNER are more expensive. Both should be booked in advance for the best prices. Both have their own web sites.

Hi I'm travelling from Fort William to Peterborough on 2 May 2021, I have 12 minutes to get off the Glasgow train at Edinburgh, find the right platform at Edinburgh for the London train, I
heard Edinburgh Waveley is a massive station, will I be able in 12 minutes to find the right platform? Also scotrail is having industrial action that day and there doing rail track works, so I'm wondering if its too risky that I might not be in time to catch my connection? Be grateful for any advise.

Does this railway station have left luggage facility at this present time?
We wish to leave luggage to explore before heading home. The hotels do not offer this facility under covid restrictions. Many thanks

Is Edinburgh Waverley Station referring to Edinburgh Gateway Station or Edinburgh Park Station or just Edinburgh Station ( names are from Trainline Apps.
Written March 11, 2019
I completely understand your confusion. The central station in Edinburgh is called "Edinburgh". It is something referred to as Edinburgh Waverley in tribute to a novel by Sir Walter Scott. Edinburgh Gateway is out near the airport and Edinburgh Haymarket is to the west of the city centre. So, Edinburgh station is the main central station. Hope that helps and enjoy the city. It is truly beautiful.

Written June 23, 2018
Sorry It’s, Princess St, Edinburgh, EH1 1BB. There are other entrances and exits, via others streets, roads etc, but Princess St is the main one.
Written June 23, 2018
The information should be in the electronic board where all the departures and arrivals are announced/posted in the station. it should come up an hour and a half before your travel time.
