The area
Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

A big area next to the castle.

The Edinburgh castle esplanade is a big square-like shaped area outside the castle, at the end of the Royal Mile.
It features some monuments and a lovely view.
It's often packed with tourists and locals.

It is free of charge to walk up to the front of the castle, which makes for a good photo op. Also gives you good views of Edinburgh.

Too noisy
May 2021 • Family
There are people who are using amplification device on their mics to shout out history and give tour commentary. This makes this place noisiest, like parts of Asia, we have been to. Utter chaos. We did not enjoy here.

Excellent views over the city
Jan 2020
Situated at the end of the Royal Mile, at the entrance to Edinburgh Castle, the Castle Esplanade is the setting for the annual Military Tattoo. However, even if you’re not going to the Tattoo or visiting the Castle, the Esplanade is worth a visit for the views over the city. Good photo opportunity.

The Esplanade is the sloping forecourt in front of the castle..such a cute ice cream cart here ..what a relief ..annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands, and artistic performance teams on the esplanade of Edinburgh..

Beautiful views of the city
Jan 2019
Located just outside the walls of Edinburgh Castle in front of the Gate House and castle ticket office is the castle esplanade. It is the Large flat area built in 1753 as a parade ground for resident troops. The esplanade is used today as the annual outdoor showground for The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. With the Tattoo stands fully built, visitors to the castle cannot see the esplanade’s remarkable collection of 10 statues and monuments that date back almost 200 years. But in the other months whilst walking around, you can can take in the stunning views of the city that surround the castle and mentioned above monuments. You can see here for example the grave of Esign Ewart and statue to commemorate the Frederick Duke of York, monument to colonel Mackenzie and The India Cross. There is also a memorial called the Witches Well which remembers the large population of women that were burned at the stake for being suspected as witches in the 16th century. Really worth a visit.

Spot before the paid area

If you are not planning to visit the castle. This is an area that is free to anyone to visit and see. Also, this is the area where military demonstrations happen.

Military Tattoo
Sep 2019 • Couples
This is the outside of the castle where annually the military tattoo plays to 8500 people every evening for a season. When we visited the stands and other props were being re.oved. it's deceptively small compared to the view we see on TV.
