We visited this building on one of the annual 'Doors Open' days in late September. It is certainly in need lots of TLC and money being directed at it as we noted areas of flaking paint here and there including adjacent to the central roof window above the staircase.

While the majority of the building seemed to be currently used for various arts related activities we were pleased to talk with representatives of the Leith Local History Society and the SS Explorer Preservation Society who had set up stalls for the day.

Though it did appear empty and there was a 'to let' sign outside, you will go past this place if you are catching a bus from the city to the Britannia, so keep an eye out, a fine building.

Built in 1812 to designs by famous Robert Reid, Custom House is one of Leith's most prestigious historical buildings. It was constructed at the height of Leith's importance as a port town and it was here that ship's masters would declare their cargoes and pay any duties.
Having been closed to the public for several decades, Scottish Historic Buildings Trust (SHBT) is leading an initiative to restore the building and return it to public use.
We were invited in to see the fine stair case and one splendid room with fine ceiling and fire place. Not always open, it will take some restoration. But the outside is well worth visiting next to the old harbour.
