Address
Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Amazing shop
Dec 2019
Stopped in most of the shops along the street looking for items made in Scotland. Bought a scarf here and returned to purchase more gifts. Quality merchandise at reasonable prices.

VERY RUDE AND DISRESPECTFUL!
Oct 2020
I was curious to see what the shop sells as from the outside it appeared like there were many nice things on offer. However, as soon as I entered, the woman at the counter was extremely rude. She told me she had to close soon and that she needs to shut the door even though it was not close. She used hand gestures to show me the way out. I felt embarrassed and harassed. Will not visit again for sure and do not recommend this shop. It is a farse and there are much better shops along the Royal Mile and with much friendlier stuff.

True Scottish experience
Feb 2019
In 2018 I was in Edinburgh for the first time. I loved the Royal Mile and all of its little stores. it wasn't until I stopped at this little shop in Cannongate that I realized how unauthentic most of the other shops had been. They felt like tourist traps in comparison. The owner of Cannongate Jerseys and Crafts, who was there at the time I was, answered my questions and gave me my first real taste of what the people and culture of Scotland were like. I bought a necklace there that still reminds me of true Gaelic craftsmanship. The atmosphere was calm and quaint. I loved it and will definitely go there again.

Beautiful things!

Saw the shop on our last day in Edinburgh. Now that I am home, I realized that I should have followed my guidance and purchased many more items!

Best gift shop on Edinburgh's Royal Mile
May 2019 • Solo
Of the many, many gift shops on and near the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, Canongate Jerseys and Crafts was the best I found. Most shops in the area have the same nice but recycled kitsch. Some shops have similar items but of higher quality. Canongate Jerseys and Crafts is different. The textiles are exquisite, and the shop has a good variety of other affordable as well. After peeking into many shops, I ended up buying almost all of my gifts for the folks back home at this shop.

Best Scottish knitwear
Mar 2016 • Friends
Beautiful Scottish knitwear. Slightly more costly but well worth it. I now have a collection of jumpers and gloves which I wear constantly in wintertime. My friends and family have bought lots from here too. The owner is really friendly and is so helpful.

Genuine Scottish Artisan Crafts
Oct 2016 • Couples
We visited this Royal Mile shop recently while in Edinburgh.

We spoke at length to the owner of the store about the products on offer and found her a mine of information and history of her artisan suppliers of Harris Tweed.

She warned us of the danger in buying items marked Harris Tweed as she bemoaned the state of the number of cheap Chinese fake imports bearing dodgy labels available in other stores in the city.

For items to be marked Harris Tweed the cloth has to have been hand woven on the islands of Harris or Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, this being governed by the Harris Tweed Act 1993, and bearing the Orb trademark.

Anything else would be a fake, even the trademark Orb label is being faked, but can be spotted by genuine suppliers. The best advice is to ask anyone selling items purporting to be Harris Tweed for the provenance of the goods being supplied. This is a sad state of affairs in my view, buying fakes is endangering the craftsmen and craftswomen in those islands who rely on people buying their genuine cloth for their livelihood. I'm sure nobody would want to see these artisans dying out.

In this store are the genuine article, among them items woven by Anna Macneil and her family. Her products are stunning.

I have no association with this business apart from visiting it once recently but was moved by the real -v- fake battle that is ongoing within the Edinburgh Harris Tweed community.
