Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- Joanne SNewcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom191 contributionsSpontaneous PotterMy husband likes to visit comedy clubs and Edinburgh has a good comedy scene. He booked tickets to the Spontaneous Potter show on a Thursday evening. Unlike other venues, this has seating for all and was not overcrowded. The bar is easily accessible although the queue sometimes long on intervals. My husband had seen some Harry Potter films but 'had lost interest after number 3' (his own words). He was dubious about his ability to get some of the comedy if any at all. Well, the show was great. Yes, he freely admitted that he didn't get every reference but had a fab time anyway. It's definitely worth trying to see a show.Visited February 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten February 22, 2020
- Giant_RamblerGlasgow, United Kingdom640 contributionsWell Needed Laugh With Extended Family .....We attended this venue after a day of celebratory drinks for a Birthday. I had not long since decided to 'call it quits' and pass on the comedy night - thankfully I changed my mind at the very last minute. Situated in Edinburgh's 'Old Town' and just a stone throw away from a flat I previously lived in, the club was a small but atmospheric venue that must have seemed daunting to any performing Comedian. In total there were four Comedians divided into a two hour timeframe (with a couple of drinks breaks thrown in the mixer). Three of them were great and one unfortunately didn't have their best night! The night wasn't far off being a five-star rating - the queues for the toilet facilities couldn't be overlooked however. Overall, a pleasant experience that won't be forgotten!Visited March 2020Traveled with friendsWritten July 2, 2020

- Kevin CCramlington, United Kingdom132 contributionsVery funny acts!!Me and my partner visited here after googling comedy shows in Edinburgh, we needed a earlier show as we where travelling home that night. We come across this place, as it was the only comedy place that had a 5pm show. It was £20 for the two of us, which i thought was good value, you can also add drink packages on to your tickets. When you arrive you get shown to your seat where you can order food and drinks via a app. The show was on for 90 mins with no break, this was Probably because there was no need to queue at the bar half way threw for a drink. There was 5 acts (including the main host) and they where all hilarious in different ways. My personal favourite was a man called Steve Bugeja, who mentioned he had a solo show in Edinburgh the next night, if we where there until then, we would of defo went to see him. It was the first time i got picked out from the audience and involved in one of the comedians jokes, and it was all in good fun, there not mean with it. Such a lovely little venue, i highly recommend!.Visited July 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten July 2, 2022
- Heiddis14 contributionsGreat show! Rachel was the best :)Great fun 2 hours! The host joked around with the audience a lot, was very funny. There were 4 acts and Rachel was definetly the best one, she hosts the podcast all killa no filla! Would highly recommend, the room was PACKED. I got moved seats twice due to lack of space. But ended in the best seat. The only tiny thing is the mojito I had was horrible, burned my throat with fake lime, don't order that and you will be fine.Visited January 2020Traveled with friendsWritten January 18, 2020

The host George was fab, really got everyone involved and created a great atmosphere. We then had 4 other comedians come on to do a set. Each of them brought something different to the stage. We were all in fits of laughter to each of them. Special mention to Amanda Hurst who’s was new to the club and was great, such a good set! You could order drinks with an QR code so it made everything easy and safe. Great night - thank you!Visited November 2021Traveled with friendsWritten November 8, 2021

We paid 3 pounds for a ticket and since we were a bit early we were seated right at the front, which made me a bit nervous at first to be honest. It was an event where new stand up comedians could show there sets and where established stand up comedians could try out new stuff. Itm was a great mix of comedians and I laughed a lot. - Bburrows78Manchester, United Kingdom69 contributionsA great night out!We had a great couple of days in Edinburgh but it can be pretty pricey. It was our last night and we were looking for something we could do with our teenagers, 16 & 18. We’d passed by Monkey Barrel Comedy and a quick google search showed they had a student comedy competition night on. Tickets were only £3 each so wasn’t really expecting much but thought for that price, it’s worth a try. Well….we bloody loved it. You start off in the bar area above and they let you know when it’s time to go down for the show. Each party are escorted to the seats so there’s no scrambling for the best seats. They have an app which you can download and then be brought drinks and snacks all night. This feature was super and all the staff were so brilliant and it was well organised. The toilets were clean and easily accessible. It doesn’t look much from the outside but it had such a nice vibe to it. I’m from Manchester and I would say it had a Northern Quarter feel to it. The student comedians were really entertaining and my teenagers loved the night too! Bonus, us parents were able to enjoy an alcoholic beverage. It was hard to find a watering hole where we could take the kids and be entertained. It was so worth the £3.00. I’d have happily paid more. I’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Edinburgh and want a relaxed, entertaining and funny night.Visited February 2023Traveled with familyWritten February 22, 2023

With it being a new material night and the comedians having been out of action for so long, we were prepared for it to be a bit hit and miss, but everyone was great!! Our host did a fantastic job of warming up the crowd and putting everyone at ease, and every single one of the four comedians we saw had us laughing until our cheeks ached. Great vibes and great value for money - would highly recommend and we hope to return.Visited July 2021Written August 4, 2021

We visited here on Friday 8 th July for the 9pm show.
We arrived at approx 8.20 , checked in and enjoyed a couple of drinks in the quirky bar downstairs.2 pints of beer £11.
Just before 9 we was then asked to go down another floor to we’re the show was .
The compare and the 4 acts were all really good.
Of course if you sit in the first rows you’re very likely to get picked on.
A fantastic night .

Cute little venue but we must have missed the comedy. Drinks were well priced. It felt like sitting in someones living room it's so tiny, in a nice way. We wouldn't return sadly.

Spontaneously booked a ticket for a Sneak Peak night whilst in Edinburgh for a couple of days, and it ended up being one of the highlights of my trip! Venue staff were so friendly and welcoming, the space felt covid safe and the table service was so convenient. The entertainment itself was excellent I’m still baffled that the tickets are so cheap. It was a really warm and intimate environment with incredibly funny comedians and so much talent on display. If you’re looking for an evening activity in Edinburgh, whether as a group or just on your own. Monkey Barrel comedy club is a must.

Hi there. I am coming to Edinburgh to celebrate my 40th birthday in June with my husband and three children who are 19, 18 and 13. Is my 13 year old allowed to attend Monkey Barrel with us all? Kind regards.
Do they sell gift tokens/cards?
Hi there - you can purchase gift vouchers. This reply feature does not allow me to post website links so I have posted it in sections - apologies for this!

Hi , does the Venue allowed 6 year old , any show , gig allowed 6 year old ?
Hi, so all under 18s must be accompanied by an adult, and we have a 16 and over guideline, with the ultimate judgement call left in the hands of the under 18's guardian. 6 could be a bit too young, as all of our shows feature adult content. We do not have a children's show on our program.

Hi is the venue near other nightlife? I'm trying to plan our weekend in Edinburgh & wondered if I should book tickets for the Friday night then we could go for drinks afterwards if there are pubs/bars nearby..Many thanks
Hi, thanks for getting in touch - it certainly is. We are right in the middle of the Edinburgh Old Town, which is the hub of the capital's nightlife scene.

Yes. There are a couple of small steps but we have a movable ramp which the team would be very happy to get out for you. Just let us know in advance and we can be ready for you.

If I book for 11 people for a Saturday evening, do we get allocated seats or is it first come first served on seating? If so, any advice on how soon after doors open we would need to be there to sit together. Thanks!
Hello!
You will have allocated seats. Our doors open at 7pm and we ask if you can be prompt for arrival as we do not allow people enter once the show starts at half 8.

We went about 20 mins before and got a great seat st the front but as it's not that big anyway there aren't any really bad seats.
