This cross is a tribute to Dean Ramsey and is located just outside St John's Church. It can be clearly seen from Princes Street and is very large.
It's a powerful tribute to a man of the cloth.

Dean Ramsay Memorial is a 8-metre high granite Celtic cross on three low steps in the graveyard of the Scottish Episcopal St John's Church on Princes Street. The cross is decorated with bronze relief panels , representing various stages of Christ's Passion, the Resurrection and the Ascension , plus six acts of charity . The Dean Ramsey Memorial is a Celtic Cross that is more impressive to me than the huge statues around Edinburgh and I don't even know who he was

This 8 metre high Celtic cross memorial outside St John's Church on West Princess Garden Street is a memorial to Dean Ramsey,. He was minister of St John's until his death in 1841 and was also Dean of the Diocese of Edinburgh. Chief founder of the Scottish Episcopalian Church Society, he also helped establish Trinity College, Glenalmond. He was a sociable and popular fellow, and was greatly mourned when he died. His congregation placed a commemorative tablet inside St. John's and this celtic cross was erected outside the church as a memorial to him.

Very much reminded me of a lot of the crosses in my nearby local Glasnevin cemetery, deedicated to the Dean of the attached church, with depictions of what looks like to me(no literture about depiction) the life of the Virgin Mary prior to the birth of Jesus. Worth a look at least.
