This statue is situated in Princes Street Gardens. It stands in tribute to Sir James Young Simpson. Doctor James Young Simpson was the discoverer of chloroform. Became Professor of Midwifery at Edinburgh University. He was principally responsible for the introduction of chloroform as an anaesthetic. Seated figure of Simpson looking to his left, holding an open book on his right knee. A worthy memorial to a great contributor to medicine and making childbirth safer.

The Sir James Young Simpson Monument is probably a fitting monument to a deserving individual. It is inside the Princes Street Gardens, but close to the street fence and can be viewed from the outside as long as you notice it's there. Sir James Young Simpson is most probably best known for being the one who discovered the usefulness of chloroform as an anaesthetic in surgery. There is no need for anyone to go out of their way to visit this statue, unless they really want to.

..... where there are many such statues effectively recognising and commemorating achievements of historic individuals who have achieved and have a strong connection with the city.

In this case a chloroform advocating medical physician who brought and proffered a good deal of relief from many of his patients and those of others in generations that followed.

Sir James Young Simpson was a famous obstetrician who was introduced the use of chloroform especially in childbirth. He lived and worked in Edinburgh.
I recently read the novel "The Way of All Flesh" by Ambrose Parry gives a fictional account of an apprentice to Sir James Simpson Young.
The statue can be found in Princes Street gardens

This statue stands in tribute to Sir James Young Simpson, the discoverer of the anaesthetic qualities of chloroform and his promotion of it's use in obstetrics. Among his many achievements in obstetric, he also introduced obstetric forceps which greatly aided birth.

The memorial depicts Simpson as a seated figure. He is looking to his left and is holding an open book, which rests on his right knee. A worthy memorial to a great contributor to medicine and making childbirth safer.

I am actually directly related to James - and have had the history of his deeds, and his words, told to me since I was young (no pun intended). Though seemingly mostly known for his introduction of the use of chloroform in childbirth (previously ether was the prevalent), he was also involved in other areas of obstetrics including the redesign of the 'forceps' and at one stage was also Queen Victoria's official mid-wife. I have many stories about him in a family history book that has been passed down to me... including information about him working with Boots (the Chemist), family life and tales of his dinner parties (where he would often invite people with opposing or just different beliefs i.e. a slave-owner and a freed-slave). I only hope that after people have viewed the statue, that they will look him up and read more about his interesting life and views.

This statue at the edge of Princes Street Garden is worth stopping and contemplating. Here is a man whose accomplishments in medicine genuinely lessened the suffering in the world and improved humanity.

Situated in West Princes Street Gardens, on a stone plinth, is this seated bronze figure of Sir James Young Simpson in academic robes.
Born in Bathgate, studied medicine at Edinburgh University, before becoming Professor of Midwifery at Edinburgh University, where he pioneered the use of 'chloroform' as an anaesthetic.
Simpsons Maternity Hospital in Edinburgh is named after him.
