Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

- Monty K2 contributionsAuthentic Kilt-maker ExperienceDon’t wast your time trying to find another kilt maker on the Royal Mile. Mr. Bill was the most educated and knowledgeable craftsman that made an otherwise overwhelming experience incredibly streamlined and simple. The shop is the best kind of organized-cozy-chaos that made you feel like you were working with the master professional. Our order shipped internationally within a month, which was impressive considering the quality and steps involved. Doing business with them and our resulting purchase was the highlight of our trip.Visited September 2023Traveled with familyWritten November 12, 2023

This place is so cool and the history of the building is fascinating. We ordered some items made using my husband's family tartan. They had to be shipped to us and they were beautiful. If I ever get to go back to Edinbugh I will go back.

Looking for somewhere to get proper military trews made, and after stepping back in time when I stepped through Bill's door, I've found the right place! Bill (owner) and Kenny (one of his former Royal Scots staff) could not have been more welcoming. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble and they are both very knowledgeable. I and several colleagues will be getting trews and waistcoats made here. Cannot wait for the finished article.

I have bought a few kilts here so when my brother wanted one for his daughters wedding I didn't hesitate to recommend the Celtic Craft centre. He was delighted with the variety of tartan and the help and level of service he received. He is more than happy with his outfit and I am sure he will enjoy it for many years.

Having traveled half way across the world to visit Edinburgh, it was particular depressing to go into all the so called 'traditional kilt makers' on the Royal Mile and Old Town only to be met by pushy condescending sales staff, 'plastic Jocks' or friendly eastern European clueless sales people. I first saw Bill taking down his sign as he was shutting shop, but with a friendly smile he invited us in. Upon immediately entering his shop it was obvious that he was an artisan of the highest caliber. Realising the lateness of the hour we left him to go home, promising to return the next day. When we returned I immediately knew we had made the right choice as I was helped through the process of choosing the correct variant of our family tartan for the outfit I wanted. Overall it was a great experience and I feel incredibly happy with my choice and content with both the quality and cost of my purchase. I sincerely cannot rate the Celtic Craft Centre highly enough and implore anyone looking for genuinely honest, good quality, well tailored, reasonably priced clothing to make a bee line for this establishment!

Small shop tucked away down a lane off the Main Street. Lots of kilt material and clan stuff. Knowledgeable staff.

This place a hidden gem among many carbon copy tacky shops on the royal mile. The shop is really nice inside and was miles apart from the other shops i have been to.
I went in to buy a Sgian-dubh and the owner was very helpful, he ordered it in for me and contacted me when it arrived. At the same time my girlfriends mum who was visiting from Australia ordered a scarf in her family tartan which was shipped to Australia.
I'm planning on a purchasing replacement kilt outfit and i'll definitely go here for it

Bought a kilt and accessories last year and then an additional jacket and waistcoat this. Both times received good advice and service with timely despatch of the finished goods- which were absolutely perfect.
Can happily recommend.

Hi I purchased a serape at the beginning of August along with a scarf. I took the scarf with me but the serape was to be shipped. I have sent an email to the aol email account and just wondered if you had any tracking info or idea how long it takes to arrive in Canada? Best regards Tracy

Despatch times were not quick but as promised, if my experience was typical I would expect 6-8 weeks

Aloha...I am trying to reach someone at Celtic Craft Centre to see if they still have Hawai`I Tartan material. There are a number of people here in Hawai`I who desire kilts made from the Hawai`I tartan...thanks, Hardy Spoehr - hspoehr7@gmail.,com

We ordered a custom made cap from the Celtic Craft Center at 101 High Street in Edinburgh on July 8, 2017 and it still has not arrived. This is now the middle of Sept and we thought for sure it would have arrived by now. Does it normally take over 2 months for the cap to be made and mailed to us?

I'm trying to remember how long my item took to get to me. It took probably 3 weeks to a month. He may be having trouble getting the cap from the manufacturer. His phone number is on the receipt. I would give him a call remembering there is 9 hours difference.😊 The owner seemed to be an upstanding person so there must be a reason for the delay.
