Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Bill is the Real Deal
Mar 2020
I've been to Bill for custom tartan bow ties twice in the last five years, and he's always been helpful and kind! His discount for shipping overseas is generous, and even with the COVID-19 situation, we received our custom purchases to our home address in the USA in the normal time frame. My sash in the Scott tartan is gorgeous, and my father and grandfather enjoy wearing their bow ties, too. The quality is excellent, and the price point is much better than other shops I've been in when I've stayed in Edinburgh.
Bill's craftsmanship, attention to detail and pride in his Scottish-made wares is a refreshing change from the typical made-in-China extravaganza you find on the Royal Mile.

P.S. Must give a shout out to Bailey, the dog who gave us an enthusiastic greeting when my friend and I first entered the shop-- we felt right at home with that welcome!

Great!
Jun 2019
This place is so cool and the history of the building is fascinating. We ordered some items made using my husband's family tartan. They had to be shipped to us and they were beautiful. If I ever get to go back to Edinbugh I will go back.

Small shop tucked away down a lane off the Main Street. Lots of kilt material and clan stuff. Knowledgeable staff.

Most Knowledgeable Kiltmakers in Edinburgh
Jun 2019
We stumbled into this kilt shop on our visit to Edinburgh this summer, and we couldn't have been more happy that we did. We spoke with Rod and learned so much about Irish and Scottish clan Tartans and their historical timelines. My friend is Irish and was interested in learning about tracing her roots through the tartans. I am a seamstress and was shown the different types of fabrics and got to look in detail at one of the kilts they had made. They even showed us the tartans for different US States and even one for my Italian heritage! Later, when we asked other kilt shops on the questions on the Royal Mile they referred us to this shop.

Best Shop in Edinburgh for Authentic Scottish Kilts and other items
May 2018 • Couples
This place a hidden gem among many carbon copy tacky shops on the royal mile. The shop is really nice inside and was miles apart from the other shops i have been to.

I went in to buy a Sgian-dubh and the owner was very helpful, he ordered it in for me and contacted me when it arrived. At the same time my girlfriends mum who was visiting from Australia ordered a scarf in her family tartan which was shipped to Australia.

I'm planning on a purchasing replacement kilt outfit and i'll definitely go here for it

Helpful and attentive

Bought a kilt and accessories last year and then an additional jacket and waistcoat this. Both times received good advice and service with timely despatch of the finished goods- which were absolutely perfect.
Can happily recommend.

Best kilts in Edinburgh
Feb 2019 • Friends
I have bought a few kilts here so when my brother wanted one for his daughters wedding I didn't hesitate to recommend the Celtic Craft centre. He was delighted with the variety of tartan and the help and level of service he received. He is more than happy with his outfit and I am sure he will enjoy it for many years.

A good, honest, traditional tailor
Dec 2018 • Family
Having traveled half way across the world to visit Edinburgh, it was particular depressing to go into all the so called 'traditional kilt makers' on the Royal Mile and Old Town only to be met by pushy condescending sales staff, 'plastic Jocks' or friendly eastern European clueless sales people. I first saw Bill taking down his sign as he was shutting shop, but with a friendly smile he invited us in. Upon immediately entering his shop it was obvious that he was an artisan of the highest caliber. Realising the lateness of the hour we left him to go home, promising to return the next day. When we returned I immediately knew we had made the right choice as I was helped through the process of choosing the correct variant of our family tartan for the outfit I wanted. Overall it was a great experience and I feel incredibly happy with my choice and content with both the quality and cost of my purchase. I sincerely cannot rate the Celtic Craft Centre highly enough and implore anyone looking for genuinely honest, good quality, well tailored, reasonably priced clothing to make a bee line for this establishment!
