The area
Address
Neighborhood: New Town
Suits and shopping bags rule the streets of New Town, until after dark when strappy dresses come out to play. This is the city’s central business district with its smaller offices, clothes boutiques, and many of the city’s flashiest restaurants and ritziest clubs. The architecture along roads like George Street helps give it a swank and formal feel: it’s a planned Georgian development of regal townhouses, geometric squares, and self-important statues. But it’s also a very wanderable neighborhood, with a healthy bustle at almost any time of day and fine people-watching in places like St Andrew's Square which fills with picnickers around lunch. You’ll also find a series of cheerful basement bistros on Hanover Street, while dark Rose Street has something of the feel of an undiscovered back alley and is chock-full of characterful pubs and small independent shops.

wonderful brunch
May 2019 • Couples
We had a wonderful brunch in the newly refurbished indoor market area. Very good service, great plates and careful selection of food.
P.S. The hotel renamed to Kimpton Hotel (part of Intercontinental Hotels Group).

Mixed opinion of Kimpton Charlotte Square
I recently visited with my sister to treat her to a spa day.

We arrived early as directed, and filled in our spa sheets, and were shown to the locker rooms.

The locker rooms were clean enough, although only one toilet available.

We went to the relaxation room to await our treatments. The room was pretty chill, but strangely had a box of teabags with no tea making facilities. There was water and fruit though.

We both had our treatment in the same room, which was nice.

The therapists asked our preferences for the massage,

The only downside would be that the therapy room was road adjacent, so every car rev, every beep, went through me and jolted me out my relaxed state. Also, for the portion of the treatment on my back, we both commented that the treatment would have benefited from an eye pillow, which is standard in any other spa, and with the amount of light coming through the window, we would have liked this to be part of it.

We then visited the Garden for lunch - major disappointment. See my other review for details.

We used the facilities following our lunch. We were saddened that there was no jacuzzi on site. The steam room and sauna were nice. The swimming pool was freezing and had weird things in it (hair ties, plasters) so we didn't spend long in there once we saw that.

Overall....I'm not sure we'd come back.

What a disappointment
Nov 2017 • Friends
We oldies from Schooldays have been going to the Roxburgh for years to have coffee and lunch every month
Today we went as usual
First they did not know where to put us at 10.30...for coffee????
Oh they do not serve coffee till 11.00......
Eventually 2 flasks were put on the table
5 mins later cups and saucers
No biscuits available ...sorry....
Then milk came
When eventually we poured out coffee it was cold weak and distinctly just instant
We asked for hot water ..got it !
It improved the liquid in the cups slightly
We left ...no lunch and certainly will not be returning
End of an era...sad..oh they only charged for the tea!!

Hard to find
Nov 2017 • Business
The Roxburgh hotel has had a refurb, very masculine. It's also changed its name to the Principal. Unfortunately no street sign to warn visitors who booked into the Rox. And gmaps take you to hoardings in rose street with no entrance. Refurb looks good at fisrt glance. Be aware that single rooms have single beds so cramped but comfy mattress. Need to upgrade the sound proofing as upset and crying baby either upstairs or next door was sleep disturbing and could hear everyone in hall outside bedroom door. Bathroom looking great until got in shower when trendy dark grouting proved to be black mould -and lots of it .
Not good value for price

Perfect position but...
Aug 2017 • Couples
The hotel has been undergoing extensive renovations and our suite was a capacious first floor room overlooking charlotte square. The designers probably need to have their fees slashed but it was comfortable bed and people don't go to Edinburgh at festival time to spend it in their rooms.
Breakfast service ranged from chaotic to OK. As there is a BIG American guest contingent early breakfast period is very busy and by and large poor. If you like to breakfast lateyou could be OK.
Sausages could double as something you point the building with and waiting for a proper coffee on the last morning was more than a challenge. The waiting staff themselves with one notable exception were helpful and apologetic. Shame they have to be the latter.

Fantastic spa day
Jun 2017 • Friends
Three colleagues and I went for a lovely spa day at the Roxburghe. Started off with glass of prossecco and trays of cut fruit, us lying on the day beds in a relaxing atmosphere. Swim, sauna and steam, then full body massage. I have had many massages and can honestly say that Therapist Jenna, gave the best massage I have ever had. Another relaxing lay down then afternoon tea (fine wee sandwiches, scones with cream and jam and fine pieces) with another glass of prossecco. Extremely good value

Relax Spa Day
Jan 2017 • Couples
Overall good day. All the staff in the 'Spa part' of the Roxburghe Hotel were very friendly and helpful. Particularly Jenna, who could not be better at what she does. Amazing massage and perfect manner. That said, the staff we encountered upstairs in the main hotel were far from helpful or friendly. Upon arrival at the hotel we asked where we could get a coffee at the hotel at 10am, seemed like a fair request. Staff looked at us like we were asking for a fancy dress outfit. Obviously they did not want to serve us coffee and also were very unaware of what the Spa offers, no sooner were we down the stairs into the spa, coffee and tea were offered to us by Jenna. Like other reviews, we found the spa facilities dated and the changing rooms not up to the standard we expect, regards age and cleanliness.

Beautiful hotel
Dec 2016 • Couples
We stayed here for 2 nights and we were so glad we did. The location is perfect, right next to Rose Street and a 5 minute walk from all the main city attractions. The room itself was beautifully decorated and the bathroom was fantastic.
The staff were very friendly and helpful, which always makes any stay better. Would definitely recommend to couples.

Beautiful room, great location
Aug 2016
I spent one night in what was apparently a newly refurbished Superior Double room, and it was indeed very tastefully done, and plenty of plug sockets - one of my bugbears! Bathroom was also very nicely decorated and suitably equipped (toothpaste and brush available from reception). Staff were all very pleasant and helpful. Great location just across from Charlotte Sq and just off Princes Street. I wasn't paying the bill, but I know the prices are on the higher side of what I'd normally pay - however, given the location and the quality of the room, I'd say it was worth the money if you're after a higher-end experience.
