Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

One of the quaintest shops on the Royal Mile
Aug 2019
We had been by this shop several time during previous trips to Edinburgh in the last three year, but we were always there when the shop was closed. Just looking at the window display makes you want to go in. In August of 2019 we found the shop open, and what a treat. The shop deals in historical British and world maps, and original antique prints. It is one of the quaintest shops on the Royal Mile. We bought several antique whisky prints, and could not be happier with our purchase.

Fantastic Map/Print Shop
Oct 2019
This shop is a cornucopia of antique prints and maps, and you could spend hours in here exploring. I found a couple of treasures — especially the antique map of Malta! This will definitely be a destination for every visit to Edinburgh. The owner was very helpful and the shop, while small, is charming. I found the pieces to be very reasonably priced as well. It’s easy to find on the Royal Mile — it’s toward the Holyrood Palace end! Stop in and see what you can find!

Great selection of prints for framing and gift giving at reasonable prices

A great place to explore prints and images of artistic and historical interest. I purchased a print by Louis Wain of a cat dressed in Scottish highland garb. Adorable and reasonably priced.

Great old place for Edinburgh art work!
May 2019 • Couples
We stopped in to the Royal Mile Gallery during our recent visit, located on the Royal Mile. A quaint old shop, with narrow walking room and tons of old engravings and art work, featuring Edinburgh and other areas of Scotland. we spoke to the owner, looking for an original engraving of familiar scenes in Edinburgh. He said original ones flew off the shelf so were hard to find any more, although he had originals from outside the city. We found a great engraving featuring the Grassmarket with the Castle in the background to remind us of our visit, and while a reproduction it was a great piece from our trip. The owner is very helpful, the shop is quaint, and it is easy to spend an hour or more going through the stacks of Scottish art finding that one special piece!

Excellent print and map shopping experience!
May 2018 • Couples
We purchased an antique map from this shop and had the best possible experience. James and his team are extremely knowledgable, friendly, and helpful in assisting customers. They have a lovely selection of prints and also genuine original and rare/antique items that are very reasonably priced. Excellent quality and excellent all around experience. Would highly recommend!!!

Lose Track of Time

If old prints and maps are your thing, The Royal Mile Gallery is the perfect spot to spend an hour or two. The selection of items is terrific and it's all quality stuff - not a typical souvenir in sight. The gallery offers a wide range of beautiful maps and there are prints for most any taste or interest. I left with several items and I'm regretful about the maps I left behind.

Art - Maps - Not a Tourist Trap
May 2016 • Friends
This is a small shop that sells prints and maps. Some maps are reproductions and some are actual antique maps taken from old atlas. It is a hobby of mine to collect antique maps from places I visit. I figured there would be a large number of these vendors in Edinburgh but this is the only shop I could find.

No problem. The Royal Mile Gallery is quite up to the task. This is not a tourist trap but a real antique/art shop. I found a large number of interesting European maps both real and reproductions. They also have a lot of art prints mostly of sites in Edinburgh. It was a lot of fun to roam through the collection. The guy manning the store was friendly and helpful...and honest.

Prices are on the high side. 90 pounds for the 1840 map I wanted. But there are lots of attractive prints and reproduction maps for much less. If you are looking for a nice keepsake or reminder of your trip this is a good, and apparently unique, source.
