Neighborhood: Old Town
Few Edinburghers live in the Old Town, but its labyrinth of dank alleys and steep streets suggests this was not always the case. Today, it’s mostly visitors, tartan-flavored souvenir shops, and pipers that you’ll find on its cobbled streets. This is the place to get a feel for Auld Reekie (Old Smelly), as the town was once nicknamed, and stroll the Royal Mile, the thoroughfare that links the castle with the royal palace – two of Edinburgh’s great set-piece attractions. But there’s lots more exploring to do here down dozens of little alleys, or wynds, while at night the city’s busiest clubs erupt along the Cowgate which is closed to traffic for this purpose.

Iconic
Dec 2019 • Family
An iconic royal mile building. Notable clock tower located right in the heart of the city. The design of the building incorporated an effective blend of Gothic and Classical Styles.

Fairytale experience
Dec 2019 • Friends
Majestic medieval interior. Many of the products are semi-antiques and collectors would love them. There are also retro 80s and 90s objects which remind these romantic and pure years. You can wander inside for several hours, everyday!

When I came a few years ago it was full of stalls now sadly only two. Still worth going in for the stained glass windows of the church

Lovely, old Kirk
Mar 2019
The Tron Kirk has stood in the heart of Edinburgh’s Old Town for almost 400 years. Its towering spire can be seen across the city.
Now the building is in a poor state of repair and is included on the Historic Environment Scotland Buildings at Risk Register. Edinburgh World Heritage hopes to save the Tron from further deterioration and secure the future of this beautiful building. In this pretty church there is an exhibition about the Scottish World Heritage Sites next to the tourist information. There is also a nice shop, which specialising in products made in Scotland. But this is so much more then a tourism information an a shop. Beautiful old Kirk in the process of being restored. Its free. Just walk right in. It's really worth it.

Lovely old church
Oct 2019
No market now, Several permanent stalls inside church which were interesting and worth a look if you are passing. As is building itself. But dissappointed to be told that the market which is still advertised is now defunct. Website needs updating!

Very interesting
Jan 2019 • Couples
Very interesting market with lots of different items of nostalgia and unique design items on sale.
Spent a good bit of time browsing the items and various craft stalls.
Interesting building too, right in the heart of the mile.

Market of things
Sep 2018
The Royal Mile Market is a rather nice area. We visited once, after our visit to Edinburgh Castle, further up the road. There are many shops and shop fronts selling all kinds of things, too many to mention. If you are looking for something, anything, you are likely to find it here! The price, however, might be another matter. Worth a stroll.

Needs to promote itself more
Aug 2019
I must have walked past this several times in recent years without realising it was there, even htis time I only wandered in by accident. There are a few stall and a tourist info desk but it was all very quiet, a pity because the inside of the building is worth a visit alone.
