Small venue with good sound
Feb 2020
A very good venue for a small show of a couple of hundred people or so. I saw the Monochrome Set here with a couple of supports.
The decor is album sleeves and posters of previous shows. This is so much better than merely being dark, dirty and untidy as so many small venues are. The toilets are clean and working, too.
You can get a decent view and have a decent beer from a reasonable selection. There are no quiet hideaway place, but that's OK. The band is the focus.
There are steep stairs to get there. So beware, most likely on the way back down.

What can I say,,drove up to Dundee for purpose of work, checked into my hotel and bumped straight into Marco and Kyle in the lobby, last place I ever expected to see a guy I’ve followed with different bands over the years. After a personal invite from the big fella seemed rude to have an early night so went down to this great little venue, reminded me of many a cracking little London venue I used to visit now sadly gone. Stage is close to the crowd, drinks are sensibly priced and the sound man for a change knew his onions!! Thanks Dundee for a cracking night and thanks beat generator for making it happen!!

I GOT ATTACKED HERE!!!!!
Jul 2018 • Family
NOW let me tell you. I went here for a nice little gig with my friendes but what I was not expecting was to be THROWNN down the stairs and touched very inappropriately!!!! At the time I was 17 and going to see a local band. The friends I was with were 18 at the time and were obviously going to be consuming alcohol. My friend went in her fannypack to get her purse out so obviuslyyyyy I held her drink for her whilst she did this.

THEN... I was grabbed.
no ID was asked for
the drink was snatched out my hand
and then

oh hell
i was thrrrrown down the stairs and touched inappropriately by atleast a 50 year old scabby bouncer.
i tried to make my way back up them stairs to find my friends when again i was pushed and told to get out

i was alone, afraid, cold and scared. I was hurt and couldnt get hold of any of my friends when suddenly another one of my friends had the same thing happen. her jacket was ripped and she was thrown down down the stairs.

when i asked another member of staff to help me she said she couldnt do anything.
i was scared and needed help however it wasnt given to me.

i was very disapointed and won't be returing everrrrr!!"!!!!!!! terrible place with terrible bouncers dont go!

Great wee music venue
Sep 2018 • Friends
Great evening of punkadelia with bands from 6pm to midnight. Showcasing some local bands like one from Crieff the highlight was of course XSLF with originals Henry Cluny and Jim Reilly and an excellent Ave Tsarion. Compact venue with scattered tables/seats with bar serving decent bottled beers. You are right up close to stage within touching distance. Very loud acoustics great atmosphere for concerts. Love all the walls decked out in front covers of bands and magazines-cool!

Great gig venue
Nov 2017 • Solo
As a frequent gig goer I've recently moved to the Dundee area and have been to Beat Generator twice now to see Wire - one of my all-time favourite post-punk bands - and The Filthy Tongues who I've seen many times in Edinburgh and Glasgow venues.

The walls are decorated with album covers which gives you something to do while your waiting for the bands to come on, as well as listening to the very eclectic mix of music played by DJ Andy Woods.

It's a relatively small venue, but I like the intimacy and it was easy to talk to some of the musicians I knew. The Wire gig was spoiled a bit by the distorted and deafening sound, but I assume the guy on the sound desk was part of their crew so can't blame the venue. The Filthies sound guy was spot on and was an excellent gig.

I've seen some comments on FB and here that the venue is too hot. Solution? Dress accordingly! Nothing quite like a small sweaty venue to see bands. Drinks were cheap.

This venue deserves to be supported and I will certainly back. It was a real coup to get Wire and The Filthy Tongues there and as much as cover bands can be good, I would prefer to see original artists.

You can often get tickets on the door or in advance from Groucho's Record Store or online agencies.

Good Venue

First time here and would definitely go back, great space, good crowd, loads of memorabilia, thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. As with the other comments listed it does get very hot and the ladies toilet only has 2 cubicles which if you're bursting can become very leg crossing!

Fast and loud!

This is possibly our favourite gig venue in Dundee. We go hear on a regular basis mostly to see our fav punk bands. I prefer to see the original line ups but they do a lot of good covers bands here too. They are really good at supporting all our local bands - there's always one or two supporting the main event. It's quite an intimate wee venue -great to see old favourites close up and personal. Great atmosphere, good sound, easy to get to in the centre of town. Seen the Rezillos here more times than I can remember and The Damned, The Ruts, The Cockney Rejects and The Skids tomorrow!. If you like live music you'll love this venue.
