The dragon tale
Sep 2021 • Solo
This is my least favourite statue in Dundee’s city centre, I find it ugly but I suppose Dragons are ugly. The dragon is found on the Dundee coat of arms but there is also and old folks tale surrounding the Dundee dragon when a farmer from Pitempton lived with his nine daughters. One day, he asked the eldest to go and get some water from the well. When she didn’t return, he sent another and as each daughter left and never returned, he traced their steps and reached the well where he met an enormous dragon sleeping surrounded by remains of his nine daughters.
Devastated, the farmer fled back to the village where he told his youngest daughter’s lover, Martin, what had happened. Martin raised a mob of villagers to kill the dragon and when they finally came close the villagers shouted, “Strike, Martin!”, which is said to be the root of the name ‘Strathmartine’.
Martin’s strike severely wounded the dragon and he slew the beast in a field at the foot of what is now Craigowl Hill. A surviving rhyme details the dying words of the dragon:

‘Tempted at Pitempton

Draigled at Baldragon

Stricken at Strathmartine

And killed at Martin’s Stane’

Situated a short walk from the Desperate Dan statue in a pedestrian area of the city centre it is easy to find and worth a look if you’re close by.

We loved seeing the dragon statue. Even my teenagers wanted a picture with the dragon! Great addition to the High street.

Didn't know what to expect from the much advertised statues around Dundee centre.
Yes this is a dragon statue and it is very beautiful.
Something to discover on the general statues of Dundee trail. Not sure if there is an official trail but you come across the statues incidentally anyway.
Maybe it would have been a good idea to find out why it is there while visiting - but am saving this pleasure for another visit.

🐉 Legendary Beast Of Dundee 🐉
Apr 2021 • Solo
Not only does Dundee have 2 🐉 on the city’s heraldic flag, but also this fantastic bronze verdigris statue by Tony Morrow. It has been guarding the east end of the High Street since 1994, and is a wondrous tribute to a local legend.
The story goes that there was a farmer with 9 beautiful daughters. He sent his youngest to draw water 🪣 💦 from a nearby well. She never came back, so he sent the next daughter to fetch her, then the next & so on, until they’d all gone off searching & none had returned. Puzzled, the farmer went off to look for them all, and at the well came upon the gory sight of the remains 🦴 of his daughters, and a sleeping sated 🐉. To avenge their deaths he raises an army of villagers to attack the beast, and a heroic lad called Martin, manages to 🗡 slaughter the 🐉. Hence the nearby village of Strathmartine is believed to be named thus after ; Strike Martin.

After seeing all the Beano/Dandy character statues.

We then came across this wonderful statue of a dragon. It seems rather incongruous compared to the comic strip statues.

It really does stand out and worth taking photos.

Love this dragon statue. Good shape and size. You need to look out for other arty bits as you walk round Dundee centre as there is also a little squirrel and naughty monkey not far from this dragon.

A bit of a surprise

Not quite sure what to make of this one. I think it would be more suited to the children but perhaps it might frighten them!
