Nice castle in a nice town

In the centre of Kirkcudbright, so handy if you are visiting the town. There really isn't much to see inside, so unless you have a membership ticket, save you money and take a picture of the outside.

Kirkcudbright itself is a lovely town to visit but we were easily drawn to the castle which is in the centre near to the main car park. We enjoyed our visit to the castle. Its a nice castle but I was happier that we had English Heritage membership to get us in. It doesnt take long to look around but there are some interesting information plaques. The mini-shop was good and staff were great even helping us really efficiently with directions.

From outside the castle looks huge so when looking at the price of entry it appears like a good deal, however once inside you realise that only the ground floor and 1st floor are still intact. I went with my 5 year old daughter who enjoyed her trip and the information plaques on the wall were good and simply written... More

We were in Kirkcudbright whilst camping nearby and my 11 year old son wanted to go inside and have a look. We paid £14.40 for 2 adults and 2 children and were only inside for around 10 minutes. Its ok but not a lot to see, mostly just empty rooms. The kids loved the Rapunzel at the window with her... More

Large rooms, Maxwell's history in the heart of the city! Laird's spy hole too. Cellar is huge! Little Kelpies are near by too.

Located in the majestic town of Kirkcudbright, this was a gem of a castle. Great value for money. You must come and visit if you're in the area.

If you don't go inside, you miss the cool stairs, storage cellar, and the"laird's ear"spy hole. Go no matter what, decide IF you want to pay admission to go in. I thought it was worth it, even though the self guided tour(wandering about looking at some plaques) only took about 20 min

Two very interesting things in this place caught my attention. The first was the "Laird's Lug," a secret place to listen in on conversations going on in the great hall. Apparently it worked quite well! But the most interesting to me was the extensive ground floor that seemed to go on and on. I couldn't help imagining whole families living... More
