Hard to find

Even though the map shows where it should be, it is hard to spot the site. Although it is the largest stone circle in mainland Scotland, I was a bit underwhelmed. Not the place to go when it has been raining hard and the field is all muddy.

large stone circle north of dumfries

Its NOT easy to find - we used the postcode and satnav. But well worth visiting if youre nearby, very atmospheric. Because its so big the stones seem small in the photos.
I tried to use my compass to identify the orientation, as the day was overcast, but it didnt give a clear indication - seems to be a magnetic anomaly. Interesting.

GPS lies, you need to exit A76 on to Glasgow Road and take your second left (right over the bridge) ... where that road intersects B729, park right there on the corner. You'll see a gate in the southeast, that's your field of stones.

The largest stone circle in Scotland, I wanted more info but only found a small plaque. Close the gate behind you. Nice walk. Great vista.

I had no problem finding it. Apple maps had no idea where it was but Google Maps got me right there. Nowhere but road to park (I squeezed on left side farm entrance and walked back to path). Circle easy to see and interesting in N understated way but more info would enhance the experience for sure .

Worth the drive by.

We barely found the place. It is in the middle of a field with a tiny little sign on the fence next to our road. I think there might be another entrance, but we didn't find it. There wasn't anything explaining what you were looking at.....just big stones in a field.

Undiscovered Ancient Places
Sep 2017 • Friends
Just north of Dumfries, the modern road follows the path of an ancient way. This passes between the site if a Holy Wood and the 12 apostles.

Whilst this is a modern name for a much more ancient site, if you bring your imagination as well you will be fascinated.

No facilities, but now one to bother you other than the sheep.

took forever to find

It took myeslf and my daughter a long time to find this place. It is not sign posted until you are there and then only on a footpath sign. Considering it is supposed to be of importance it's a pity that it's hidden away (it is in a farmers field so he probably doesn't want tourists there). We did walk around the circle but it was a little disappointing.
