A beautiful (yet always closed) church.
Jul 2021
This is a beautiful church with a stunning exterior, located in a tranquil park in the university's campus.
Unfortunately, it was constantly closed throughout our 2-day visit to the area.

Stunning Exterior
Aug 2019 • Couples
We were unable to go inside due to a wedding. It is a lovely majestic building. There are open grassy areas where you can sit and relax and even have a picnic. It is the perfect place for a quick stop.

Lovely place to visit on a Sunday afternoon.

Used to visit Dumfries a lot when I was with my ex, it's truly a magnificent area to come and just relax. It's quiet and on the campus of the old hospital. There's a great path for jogging as well.

The Lewis Organ in Crichton Memorial Church
Feb 2019 • Solo
I visited the church about 10 years ago and the organ was then a delight to find and play. Only yesterday I was alerted to the fact the church was still functioning and thrilled to read the reviews already in trip advisor - every word the former hospital Chaplain says on here is absolutely true!
There is now a distinguished Lewis organ (1907) beautifully rebuilt recently in Newtownbutler Parish Church, N Ireland...sounds like the one in Crichton Memorial and is just as nice to play.

A very spacious internal with ampule sitting and well laid out. The organ in this church is well tuned and blends in well with the internal surrounds.

A Large and Perfectly Gothic Mini Cathedral set in Delightful Gounds
Nov 2017 • Solo
Well signposted and easy access with a hotel near by. Very impressive and well looked after with regular services and many other uses - weddings, graduation ceremonies, etc. It is unclear as to when it is open to the public however. Several information boards and a statue of Mrs Crichton (nee Grierson) stands close by - the Crichton's made their money through the East India Company and lived at Friars' Carse near Auldgirth. Mrs Crichton had intended to leave funds to establish a university however the existing ones objected and a mental hospital was built instead - but she got her wish in the end :-)

Impressive church built for a psychiatric hospital
May 2017 • Couples
This is essentially the chapel of one of the most famous psychiatric hospitals in Scotland. It was well ahead of its times with a more humane approach to the care of the mentally ill in the 19th century. The hospital is now closed but this church remains in the Crichton grounds which are stunningly beautiful parkland and gardens. The church shows some of its age and the damage that fine red sand stone sustains in over a century, but the grand windows are beautiful with black and white stained glass.

Rather massive but attractive.

This was part of the huge estate of hospital buildings. It sits well with the nearby hotel and reception hall. Plenty of parking.
