A well considered set of exhibits. Worked hard to keep COVID safe. Welcoming staff. Kids enjoyed it. Easy way to spend a couple of hours.

Excellent Cafe
Jul 2021 • Couples
Stopped for the cafe as it was near Dunstaffnage Castle car park.
Excellent cafe with view of the bay, great home cooked soup and cake, friendly staff and low prices!
Highly recommended

Informative and interesting. Worth the drive for the cafe alone.

Really interesting and informative displays designed to get you thinking. Hands on for the kids. If you don't go for the science go for the cafe. Feed the family lunch for half the price of most places in Oban. Quality service and presentation. Good selection of family friendly menu options. 10 minute drive from town. Try the cakes!

A Little Dissapointing
Aug 2019 • Couples
Firstly, it is easy to find the Ocean Explorer Centre as it is well sign posted off the main road (A85) near Dunbeg. When you turn off the A85 just follow the road until you come to the car park, which was free. We also visited Dunstaffnage Castle and Chapel, which was really good, well worth a visit whilst you are here.

Anyway we entered the Ocean Explorer Centre - now I am not sure really what I was expecting, but I think I was expecting something moderately substantial given the the name Ocean Explorer Centre. Well, we walked into the room by the reception and found that this was it. Now at this point I was disappointed as I was expecting a little more.

Do not get me wrong what was in display was informative. There was a small cinema and a few activities for children, but considering how big our oceans are and the many diverse things that is happening to them I think this Centre only touched the surface.

There is a small cafe at the rear of the centre which is as big as the Ocean Explorer Centre itself - need I say anymore.

It is appreciated that you make donations when you enter; however, I would more than willing to have a standard entrance fee if it meant there could be more exhibits or information.

At the moment the oceans are a focal point of our inability to manage our everyday things that somehow enter our oceans - perhaps there could have been more visual displays (although there is the small cinema) and information about this that would educate current and future generations about the impact of our actions.

In summary it is a well managed facility, but just not what I expected. The member of staff was really helpful. The coffee was really nice in the cafe.

A lovely place to visit.
Very interesting and interactive.
The lady staff member was lovely and very welcoming.
My son now wants to be a marine biologist and study with them (he's 7 atm).
The shop was lovely. Shame the cafe was closed but we did visit late on in the day.
Would really recommend.

Entertaining the kids
Jul 2019 • Family
Well today after many years of passing as a family we have just spent a lovely few hours getting to know about the oceans and all that is going on under the seas all around us. We popped in because every other time we have been in Oban this excellent little place is closed because it is only open Monday to Friday and closed weekends. We were met by a lovely lady Helen who gave us a wonderful welcome and told my girls that there was little fact sheets that would entertain them and they certainly did. They were sent searching for atoms and molecules. They searched everywhere and eventually found everyone to Helens amazement. We had a wonderful time looking and interacting with all the stations and learnt so much from the information. We then did exploring on the beach looking for different things on the list we were given. We completed this also and my girls were praised yet again by Helen. A lovely lady who made our visit all the more special. I would definitely recommend visiting here and we will be back in the future. I am posting a few photos and hopefully the research staff can help me with the names of the creatures from the beach. One is a strange beetle that was on some seaweed and the other was a blob or egg or something else. Great time had by us all.

Good for your mini scientists
Jul 2019 • Family
We enjoyed the visit and our 8yr old who’s into science loved the samples and having a go on the microscope the best! Some things were not working so that was a shame, 8yr old took part in the micro/atom quiz/hunt and loved it , staff on hand we’re friendly and helpful, though cafe was a massive disappointment, no food at 2pm even though said open till 3:30 , good job we didn’t want to eat anyway as all that would have been available were instant noodles or instant pasta?! That’s hardly quantity food , lady said she’s not ‘cooking’ anything now , I hardly call that cooking! All fridges were empty and lady was quite unhelpful , cafe could be much better with tea , cakes snacks if nothing else.

Our B&B host suggested this centre to us. Friendly welcome, lots of information. Donation was asked for. Shop sells original, high end goods if you are looking for something special.
Nice Walk around coast towards Dunstaffnage castle.
Would be interested to know the reasoning in using takeaway cups in the cafe.

Only been open about a year but an excellent place to spend a couple of hours with young children. The staff take a real interest and want to stop and talk to you. Would certainly go back again next time we are up that way.
