Lovely Island
Jul 2021
We walked to the small ferry terminal and went to this Island, it was a gorgeous day and the views were amazing once you walked to the top. there is a little farm shop with an honesty box where you can get drinks, ice cream, even home baking and gifts....lovely! We also did a boat trip around the island where we could see seals, porpoise and the highland cows stood in the water as they ere too hot!

Fantastic

Great walk to the castle, well worth going to see. The views are stunning. Is not to a rough walk, lost to take in when walking along. The castle offers some fantastic views, there are a couple of walks you can take so don’t have to do the full walk. Castle is well sign posted and so is the amazing little coffee shop.

Great circular walk

Great circular walk and the beach under the castle was a great spot for a picnic lunch. Allow 3-4 hours for the trip. Castle in really good condition and wonderful views.

Worth the Diversion to visit
Sep 2020
Towards the end of our circular walk around Kerrera we came to Gylen Castle. The castle is a short diversion off the main route around the island but is well worth a visit. The castle itself is on the very edge of the rugged headland with commanding views out to sea, on the day we visited it was very windy and at times it was difficult to walk into the wind. There are a number of information boards giving a lot of detail about the castle. You can cross a small bridge to enter the building although there is not much to see inside. Worth a visit if you have time.

Picturesque castle and lovely walk on island of Kerrera
Oct 2020 • Couples
We chose this from the activity list on TA after a visit to the Oban distillery. So glad we did! To get to the island you travel by a small foot passenger ferry on a short 5 minute crossing. Lovely views of the island. Kerrera is a small island with a few farms and rental cottages. There is a circular walk around the island. Gylen castle is situated at one end, about a 2 hour walk from the ferry landing. The views of the castle are spectacular and it’s framed perfectly by the sea, cliffs and shoreline. We took lots of pictures!

Really enjoyed our walk and visit to Gylen. It’s most definitely worth a visit.

Stunning Location
Sep 2020
Definitely worth the trip if staying in Oban. We caught the small ferry boat (about 2 miles outside of Oban centre) across to Kerrera which only takes about 5 minutes to cross. Its then just over 5 miles to walk the coastal route to the castle and back. The setting for the castle is stunning on a cliff top over-looking a pebbled beach. Don't be fooled by the tea room signs all along the route though as it was closed when we finally got there!

Stunning views
Aug 2020 • Couples
We got the little foot passenger ferry over to the island which only took a few minutes to get to the island of kerrera. A beautiful little island populated mostly by sheep and wild goats no cars are allowed on the island apart from the few islanders who live there .this gave it a real natural feel the highlight was gylen castle which was looked over the Atlantic spectacular views and a real peace of scottish history. Well worth the visit and if you are up for it you can do the circular walk that takes you back to the ferry. Great day out

Worth the walk
Aug 2020
A glorious summers day spent ferrying over to Kerrera then walking to the castle, the tea room being shut! The walk isn’t strenuous with lovely views over Kerrera sound and of the island countryside. The castle itself is set on a rugged headland with beautiful views out to sea. In side is well preserved and has a real sense of the dramatic history it has withstood. Lots of well kept information boards also help to bring that history alive.

Perfect
Jul 2020 • Friends
Walked here this week after looking for things to do from Oban. The ferry is 5 minute crossing from a jetty that is 3 miles south of Oban itself.
We walked to the castle and had a mixture of weather's, the coffees shop was still shut so take a flask and food.
The island itself is beautiful, with every view being photo worthy. The castle was amazing, aside from no roof it is fairly well intact and had some really good information boards dotted around.
I would definitely revisit the island and castle, couldn't fault the day.
