We have driven past Castle Stalker and enjoyed the magnificent and very photogenic view many times, so when we were organising a reunion of friends and were wondering where to take them, we thought that a tour of this fascinating castle, not just for its colourful history, but also it's links with Monty Python's Holy Grail (as Castle Aaaagghh, would be just up our street.
And so it proved. Nine of us made a short and delightful trip by boat over to the island with the owner Alasdair as our guide.
After we climbed up to the castle entrance we were shown inside and met by a display of Monty Python memorabilia. Alasdair who had been at the castle on the day of filming, and secured a part in the film, regaled us with stories about the day John Cleese, Graham Chapman and the rest of the team spent what must have been a hilarious day at the castle.
From there we climbed to the grand hall where Alasdair explained how his father had come to buy the castle and how its renovation had been undertaken, a real labour of love.
Eventually we climbed via the other floors to the ramparts with Alasdair explaining a little more about the history at each stage. The views over Lorne and Appin are spectacular.
All too soon we had to descend back to the boat and take the short trip back to the shore.
This has to be the best excursion we have been on in the area and all of us felt privileged to have had the opportunity to take it. Trips out to the Castle are limited and advance booking is essential, so plan and book well ahead. Check the website for availability.

A picturesque castle sitting on it's very own island. For Monty Python fans, it is a must-see, but everyone will appreciate it, especially photographers who get stunning photos if the light is right. There is a parking lot and a nice beach to walk along. Worth the stop!

Castle Stalker is just a short walk from the cottage we rented in Appin. We reached it by a walking along the shoreline. It looks majestic, situated on its own small island in Loch Linnhe. The castle can be visited internally but not in 2020 due to COVID.

It’s so pretty with a beautiful setting! The water is so shallow and clear near the shoreline. Our doggy loved swimming here.

Definitely worth visiting.

We caught our first glimpse of Castle Stalker from the hillside cafe and the tide was fully in. However, by the time we managed to find a spot to park up and make our way nearer to the castle, luckily the tide had gone quite a way out so we were able to stand on the shore and get some great shots. We parked close to Jubilee Bridge, then walked across the bridge and along the shore. It was great to get up fairly close and quite magical as nobody else was around.

I stopped at the cafe and visitor centre here and admired the lovely view over some tea and cake. The sun was shining and the aspect amazing. The castle isn’t huge but it is perfectly formed and situated perfectly in its surroundings.

Alistair enjoys showing off his castle. He is a wealth of knowledge about it's history, the history of the area, and much more! This is a wonderful chance to see something unique from most castles you might visit. Highly recommended for Monty Python fans or people that just enjoy hearing the story of a castle and it's place in local history.

Travelling with two Monty Python fans, I was never going to get away with not seeing this place. However, it was definitely worth the slight detour so we could see this picturesque castle on a small offshore island. Great photo opportunities. There is a car park near so a short walk will let you see it in all its glory. Also a cafe.

This is Castle Stalker described as one of the most romantic castles in Scotland, well it might be more romantic when the tide is in but on the day we went it wasn’t it was just vast mud flats. Still quite nice to see so give it a visit. You can’t get into the castle without a prior appointment.

Definitely worth a stop if you're traveling through the area. I had planned on stopping at the near by cafe, but our timing was off. We found parking, though unsure it was an actual car park. It's a short walk up a path for a good view of the castle.

Out with our guide we stopped here for a short break. A two minute walk from the café carpark brings you out to over look the castle, where you can get an amazing view and a great place to take pictures. When we were there we couldn’t find the Holy Grail!!!!
