Visit this charming rustic beauty of a forerunner to the Industrial revolution. The rural corn mill, still run today by the gentle flow of Barry Burn, was the ancestor to today's food preparation processes and a myriad of complex technologies that sprung from simple water-wheels, gears, pulleys and belts.

Enjoy the tranquility of this renewable and sustainable approach to work & food in bygone days. Listen to the splash of the wheel and the rumble of the mechanics as the building shakes itself into life. Tours explaining the significance of these mills and telling some of the tales and stories of those that worked in and around these hubs of community are offered and bookings can be made to see flour being ground.

We visited Barry Mill late on a weekday afternoon. The satnav wanted to take us down a farm track but we followed the signs through the very pretty village of Barry. The entrance leads to ample parking. It is a short walk via steps or a winding trail from the car park to the gift shop/ticket office and to the... More

Barry Mill is an old working oatmeal mill owned by the National Trust for Scotland. It is a category B listed building and has been carefully restored. It was a really pleasant place to pass an afternoon. The tour of the mill itself took about 1 hour and the guide, Caroline, was interesting, knowledgeable and helpful. The grounds surrounding the... While we arrived just before closing time, the NT staff were wonderfull, they kept the Mill open and gave us a very fast but comprehensive walk through the Mill, explaing all of its varied operations, the staff certainly went beyond the norm to ensure we enjoyed our visit. We will be back to enjoy a much longer visit.

Really interesting visit to this mill. Initially looked around myself and then had a tour with Sandra who put the mill into working motion! Amazing to see such old water powered machinery in action. Sandra was very knowledgable as she explained the process. Definitely worth a visit. There are walks too but too muddy today.

The hypnotic rotation and the rumbling of the millstones will bring together yester years as the Barry Mill comes to life!!! This is yet another NTS gem. The story of the mill is told by the chains and teeth of the wheals as they mesh together in a pattern of engineering typical of the great Industrial Revolution. Suitable for all... More

Splendidly low-key, friendly place with a smashing, fun and knowledgeable lady on the reception. Lovely walkies along the river with the hound and plenty of leafy parking spots for said hound. Bowl of water and doggie treats box too! What more can I say - über friendly. Take your picnics!

Fascinating functioning traditional water-mill. Warm welcome, enthusiastic well-informed guides, and an opportunity to watch and even assist the milling process. The mill has a lovely situation and there are some short walks around the site

Was greeted onto the premises by a very helpful and enthusiastic gentleman who explained the whole process of what happens at the mill and even let a couple of kids turn the mill on. A fantastic piece of history and an impressive piece of engineering. My 4 year old had an extra job of finding all the mice hidden around... More
