Located along Union Street is the Kirk of St Nicholas. The Mither Kirk - Mother Church dates back to the 12th Century with the present building dating back to the 18th and 19th Century. I visited the adjoining churchyard which is immersed in history and incredibly interesting and worth a visit in its own right. The churchyard is easy to find and close to Union Terrace Gardens.

This is a usually tranquil place to wander or sit a while ( plenty of benches) in the centre of Aberdeen, amidst the shade of leafy trees and “ The Mither Kirk.”( St. Nicholas church)
There are several interesting and ornate tombs and gravestones here of historical importance, belonging to long-gone eminent Aberdonians - some dating back to the 17th century, and inscribed in Latin. An info board on site gives you the details about them. Apparently one of the “residents” haunts the graveyard. Difficult place to eat a snack though, as the pesky pigeons descend in a flock, as they’re used to being fed crumbs etc.

A lovely little graveyard to visit. The older gravestones are especially nice with jobs on the stones. Nice benches to rest on but make sure it us light when you visit.

If you take a walk through the churchyard you become awake of the smell of marijuana - stinks. Lots of people with loutish behaviour.

Seems a bit frightening. Not the place to be.

Took a look at a few of the graves - that’s always interesting. Keep out.

This is in the grounds of St Nicholas Church on Union Street. It has a really interesting graveyard going back to 12th century with most from1700. Best visit in daylight.
Very interesting to read the family histories of those interred. So many of those here died in their 40s, 50s and 60s. Just shows how well we are looked after today.
Excavations have been undertaken and it has been agreed that skeletons will be interred in a new crypt on the floor of the East Crypt.
Good experience on Union Street.

Grave yard right in the centre of the town with old interesting grave stones of what would have been the cream of society of Aberdeen in the !18th/19th century. Interesting reading. Also take in the church with with the clock tower attached to it with it's original Georgian untouched interior.

Lovely place to rest in the town centre. I sat on one bench in the graveyard to look at the gravestones. It was busy on a Saturday afternoon but it's a good place to rest. Well kept, clean and green . Enjoyable stay.

I love grab a ice cream, coffee or a sandwich and spend some time thinking about life in this nice yard. As you can see, this yard is part of a church but is beautiful and full of peace.

This cemetery is right in the centre of the city. While is nothing particularly special it still has this special atmosphere because of its location.

Worth a short visit
