We were lucky enough to come across this fantastic sculpture as we were wandering in the old part of Aberdeen. Cast in bronze, it portrays one of Scotland's finest historic figures in all his battle finery and is a beautiful piece. Nice gardens nearby too along with another sculpture of Prince Albert.

This magnificent bronze statue of the Scottish national hero in classical garb was sculpted by William Grant Stevenson R.S.A. , and erected in 1888. It’s mounted on a plinth of rough-hewn pink granite boulders, and around the base are engraved his legendary words. With the recent upgrade of this area of Union Terrace the statue has also been given it’s own landscaped infinity pool/water feature.
This monument celebrates and commemorates the life of the brave Scottish landowner and freedom fighter , who is famed for his part in the defeat of the English army at Stirling Bridge during the Scottish Wars of Independence. This was considered treasonable - for which he was duly hung, drawn and quartered - and his narrative has passed down through the centuries. The 1995 award-winning film “Braveheart” was loosely based on his life.

The William Wallace Statue is a striking structure adjacent to His Majesty’s Theatre and is in a commanding position overlooking Union Terrace Gardens. The statue commemorates Sir William Wallace who was one of the main leaders during the First War of Scottish Independence. The statue is in a fairly secluded spot and got very little attention from passers-by when I visited but is definitely worth a look whilst in the area of Union Terrace Gardens.

One of many statues to the Scottish independence hero, William Wallace. This one depicts the great man wearing classical medieval chain armour and carrying a claymore in his right hand. The features of Wallace are handsome and pose suitably heroic. It’s a bit of a romantic interpretation of Wallace compared to the others found in Scotland, but we love the man. The statue of William Wallace on Rosemount Viaduct and if you get the angle just right, in the background of the photo will be the dome of St Mark's Church.

Eager to see this fabled gem of history and architecture, I sallied forth along Skene St. with a spring in my step and jaunty tune on my lips.

My whistle turned into a raspberry when to my dismay, this "thing to do" in Aberdeen turned out to be, well, a large statue beside a busy road. See the photos? Well, that's what it looks like.

...

That's all, folks.

This statue looks good, of one of Scotland’s hero’s, but it’s presently in the middle of a construction site. It didn’t look as messy in the Blitz as now. Horrendous, but notwithstanding a nice statue.

This dramatic statue is very much part of the city landscape in Aberdeen, in a fairly central location, and certainly worth seeking out for a photo opportunity - whether you are interested in the history of the man or not. Quite amusing when birds decide to use it for a perch.

If you want to peer inside the psyche of the average Scot then this statue really sums it all up - particularly take note of the wording inscribed in the foundation stone....and within the hearts of most Scots....
