There's something especially compulsive about this one. I think it's the dispassionate expressions on the faces of the two young women in the foreground of the shot.

Political expression takes many forms but the Republican Murals are especially powerful. Take your time to view them, and hopefully you have a city guide with you (we did) to explain each one.

Sad.

Political conflict is bad, period! Ask any of us who have experienced it. It is at its worst when it entangles non-combatants. Perhaps its only benefit is that it creates social and political activists like Bernadette Devlin. All too often it creates martyrs like 14 year old Annette McGavigan. These murals make you confront these and other realities, and make you think! Thankfully, the Irish don't hide their history.

Political art at its best

Another of the many murals in Bogside illustrating scenes during The troubles - this one depicts Bernadette Devlin who was leading civil rights leader and politician.
She is shown address the crowds at the Batle of the Bogside (for which she was gaoled) and behind are residents with bin lids, banging on them was to alert the neighbourhood if the authorities were raiding the area. Some of these lids are in the Free Derry Museum nearby.
She survived an assassination attempt by the Ulster Freedom Fighters at their home in 1981 where she was shot 14 times, in front of their children.

What a sad time for the Irish people. You have to feel for them as they seem to have a difficult time letting go.

Striking Memorial Mural
Apr 2019 • Solo
I loves this striking murals depicting a young Bernadete Devlin addressing the crowd during the bBattle of the Bogside with others women banging bin lids to alert her and others to the arrival of the authorities. She was the youngest MP in Britain and someone I've read a lot about in school History books.
It is a wonderful mural, I think the first one of the many in the area to be painted.

Having viewed the Bogside from the tour bus we decided to walk back to see more detail. It is difficult to come to terms with loss of innocent lives due to the actions of British troops who should never have been deployed.
