Of all the many gates in the nagnificent, enchanting city walls of Derry, this is one of the most interesting and surely the most historically significant.
It was built in 1865 on the site of one of the 4 original gates to the city- the very one that was closed by the Apprentice Boys in defiance against the advancing army, this beginning the famous Siege of Derry in 1688.

This is the entrance to the walled city closest to St. Columba's Cathedral and close to Artillery Street which brings you to the Center for Contemporary Art.

We came across this Gate when walking through Derry looking for another attraction. It is a very good structure but very busy with traffic at the time we were there. Not a must see but interesting to those interested in the history of Derry.

This gate probably led down to the ferry and at a later date the first city bridge. This was the gate that was closed by the 13 apprentices in December 1688 to prevent the Jacobite troops from entering the city. This ultimately led to the siege of 1689. The present gate was built later in 1866.

Worth a walk around the rampart wall to look at and go down the steps to road level and gaze up!

This gate was one of the easiest to walk through. Some of the others had only one opening and it was tricky with traffic. But this one is quite large and full of history.

Well we walk through the gate at least three times a week and rarely give it a thought our visitors could give us locals a history lesson, I am as guilty as any for taking what is around me for granted should try to find out more of our past history.
At last stopped to really look at this historic gate and try to relate to its part in the past of this great city, I hope I can change from looking but not seeing at least I have made a start.
