Loved The City Walls and Bastions
Apr 2019 • Solo
The Butchers Gate by the Maldron Hotel is one of the original four gates of the city, so-called as the butchers back in the day had their premises here.
The walls are magnificent, utterly beguiling, and all the gates and bastions are worth a visit. There are numerous plaques along the way giving plenty of Information. The views are superb from lots of points, the Butchers Gate is sonewhat overlooked by surrounding buildings to be amongst the best for views. Still well worth a stop though.

Butcher's Gate

This gate is one of the original four gates of the city walls. It's name comes from the types of shops located near it - butcher shops. It does not have a separate archway for pedestrians, just a narrow little footpath, so you have to be mindful if walking through this gate. There is a set of stairs that give you access to the top of the wall on one side of the wall and a ramp on the other. It is relatively plain with tall buildings on one side and brick town-homes and a hill on the other. I would not go out of my way to see this gate unless you want to complete your photo collection.

Interesting access point that offers some fascinating insights into the history of the city and the wars and damage. See it with all the other parts of the walled city

Handy.

This is the gate through Derry’s walls that is overlooked by the tall yellow Maldron Hotel. We found it handy to get back to the old town centre after seeing the murals in the Bogside. I was saddened to see that protective mesh fences had been put atop the nearby section of the historical walls. Where that ended some paint bomb lobbed from the grassy bank below had hit the back of the Walker's Memorial Plinth.

Most Heavily Damaged Gate During the 1689 Siege
Sep 2013 • Couples
My wife and I visited the Butcher's Gate in September 2013. This gate is one of the original four gates of Londonderry/Derry's city walls (in total there are seven gates). The Butcher's Gate was the most heavily damaged during the 1689 Siege by King James II's forces (this gate along with the Bishop's gate). This gate was rebuilt around 1790 and is named because the street inside was named Butcher Street (due to Derry's Butchers having shops on this street).

The gate has historical signs and markers explaining its history during the 1689 Siege. But do not come to this gate and expect you will spend more than a few minutes in awe and wonder -- combine visiting this gate with walking the entire Derry City Walls, and visiting the other six gates.
