About
Prehen House is one of the North West’s most historic buildings. Situated next to the famous woods, it commands stunning views of Derry, the river Foyle and the hills beyond.Prehen is intimately linked with the history of Derry. Records reveal that it was inhabited by 1640; in 1738 the Knox family began their great association with Prehen when Andrew Knox, the MP for Donegal married Honoria Tomkins, the Prehen heiress. In Victorian times the colourful Colonel George Knox was one of Derry’s most eminent figures. But with World War I looming his grandson Baron George Carl Otto Louis von Scheffler Knox was put under house arrest. Soon after the 3,641 acre estate was seized as ‘enemy property’.Happily, the house was brought back into another branch of the Knox family and today the North West has a wonderful heirloom forever linked with the history of the City

Not open to the public, but we got a private tour!

There's tons of history at the Prehen House. The story of half hung MacNaughton is one that is near to my family as he is in our family line. While in Northern Ireland, we decided on the fly to take a day trip up to the Prehen House just for some photo opportunities and then take the highway around the northern coast on the way back to our hotel. Boy, am I glad we did. When we arrived at Prehen, it looked unoccupied. We were taking some pictures and then saw 2 little boys come around from behind the house and were playing soccer in the front lawn. We asked them if the place was open for tours, and they said no, but their mum was in the cottage out back and we could go talk with her. We met Alison. She is a beautiful soul. We explained our connection and she offered to let us go into the house and she showed us around. The history there of not only the Knox family & the MacNaughton story but her own love story is just remarkable. I am so glad that we took a chance for a photo op that day.
Alison did say that they hope to one day get the house up and operating for tours, but they just aren't able to right now. Keep looking for when they open though!

A beautiful old house with an amazing past. The main claim to fame being, its past connection to the now legendry "half hung McNaughton"
Unfortunately due to the recent tragic death of the owner the house is not really open to the public, unless by private arrangement.

Went to Prehen House with work colleagues as a part of team day out. It was enjoyable; however, not overwhelming. Good time killer.

I was in Derry for my Daughters wedding on May 1 st 2016 .we booked into Prehen Cottage for 3 nights. I was staying with my daughter and her husband and 3 grandkids.it was a delightful old cottage with beautiful antique furniture, the cottage is very quaint and quirky. Lots of space for the kids to play. It was such a delight to stay there and I will definitely stay there again.

Fantastic Place...but be Cautious

Prehensile House has been at the Centre of the History, Heritage and Mythical History of Derry for many years. I have always wanted to visit to see what it looks like in the flesh (bricks and mortar) as opposed to in photographs. We drove up to the house and we're captured by its beauty. It's a large stately home in substantial grounds.

I think this is a family home as opposed to an attraction as such so maybe it would be a good idea to call the owners first if you plan to visit. I am sorry that I did not do this and I hope we didn't startle the occupants of the house on our drive up to it. Never the less I will give this place an excellent review.

Wonderful, absolutely Wonderful

My sister and I visited Prehen House and we were treated to an hour and a half of the history of this amazing listed building. It has been sympathetically restored to the year it was built in 1740.
This has been a labour of love for Colin Peck and his parents and the house is open for the public to see what life was like in the 18th Century. Colin is a mine of information regarding his ancestors stately home and he is so informative regarding the tragic history of the Knox family.
Please go and see it, you won't be disappointed.

Going back to good times

Visiting Prehen House is a must if you are heading Derry direction. It is most definitely a hidden treasure and a place with amazing history, atmosphere and even its own ghost. House is very well-maintained with its original furniture and art and it also has a charming cottage house at the back which can be rented in warm months. From time to time guests can enjoy a very special meal in the main Library where the atmosphere is really special. Every time I enter this building I am taken back to times when women were women, men were gentlemen and tradition and values were important. You can hear famous legends and all the stories connected to the house from its very hospitable owner. I've never met the ghost yet but one day who knows, I might be lucky :)
