- kwagmeisterNewburgh, Indiana1,657 contributionsOur group of 20 enjoyed it!We were a group of 20 for dinner on a Sunday evening…..and that is a daunting number of people to serve! Two long tables in a room just off the dining room were set for our party, and one server did a yeoman’s job taking orders and managing the serving of all the starters, mains and desserts…..and did so without seeming at all flustered. That’s impressive! The seafood chowder is outstanding and worth ordering. Full of fresh fish, shrimp and lovely potatoes with a light cream broth, it is not only visually appealing but also delicious. Our vegetarian friend really enjoyed her dish, a vegetable curry. Several had fish and chips (a lovely generous piece of thick fish beautifully battered and fried), the salmon, chicken, etc…. Presentation was lovely, servers did not leave anyone waiting as plates all came out together, and flavors were really nice. The desserts are beautiful and wow the daily cheesecake is worth trying. Our only quibble was that the room seemed a bit warm and the wine was not chilled. Otherwise, it was a lovely meal. As guests of the Slieve Donard it was an easy two minute walk.Visited August 2022Written August 7, 2022
- Cazpf1Castlewellan, United Kingdom52 contributionsPrice highPopular weekend sun out and plenty about Newcastle so we’d decided to grab a bite to eat enjoy the views and atmosphere and a few we drinks. We arrived and was not really please with the new decor did not seam to have to many changes apart from the booths which is not ideal in this day and age and right beside the kitchen. Menu not amazingly great not a lot of options. But we walked out after we orders fish and chips to be then told they had none and then to be told a burger and chip was £21. Not surprised they was room for us to walk in and not have to reserve. ViewsVisited September 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten September 4, 2023
- kate055212 contributionsImpressedWe had dinner here on two nights as on a package deal with the hotel. The food was really good the lovely James and his staff made us very welcome. Big shout out to Ria and Anne who looked after us so well these are difficult times for hospitality and with a lot of new inexperienced staff they did a Sterling job having only been opened few days and had a busy night will definitely return.Visited May 2021Traveled as a coupleWritten May 28, 2021
- Anthony MBangor, United Kingdom2 contributionsSo so bad!!!No other way to say it. Late lunch visit for a wedding anniversary. Party of 9. First of, forgot one of the starters. Nobody came to make sure we got everything. Then it took nearly an hour to get main courses. One of the waiters came over to let us know that the food would be out shortly and said that they took their time preparing the food to make sure it was right with such a large party. 9 people. That didn't happen either. One of the party ordered a burger without the cheese. Some one was clearly not listening. We had clear view on the kitchen. It was made, set in the window, then taken away and the cheese scraped off the burger and the same meat pattie was put back on the bun and sent to our table. The burger was for someone with a dietary requirement. No one came over to check on our food. One of the kids mains was also forgot about and we had to wait on this as well. Disappointed would be an understatement. Never be back!!!Visited May 2021Traveled with familyWritten May 30, 2021
- WelikeHouse79 contributionsPoor serviceWe came here for early dinner without a booking and there were plenty of tables. The young waitress showed us to a table directly within next to the kitchen. When we asked for another table, we were told that is the only one (clearly not). We had a clear view of the kitchen and could see that our food was ready but it was just sitting there. All the waiting staff were just wondering around and no one checked that the food was ready to be served. One of our main course was steak and no steak knife was offered. When asked for it, we were greeted with amazement. On the whole, food was average and service was poor.Visited July 2021Written July 31, 2021
- Deborah TDunmurry, United Kingdom1 contributionRoom for improvement. Before I start, let me just say that without Amy's first class service and professionalism, this would be a one star review. My partner ( himself a chef )had the burger which was dry and tough, his fries tasted awful. My salmon was nice but nothing to get excited about, the green beans that accompanied it were barely cooked, I had to fight to get my knife through them, the smashed potatoes were visually unappetising and a quick taste confirmed their blandness. The hollandaise sauce tasted like it came out of a carton and it really let the dish down. We expected better from this renowned establishment. Listen to your regulars and put the food they like back on the menu . Start with the fishcakes that people travelled from all over to enjoy. And for goodness sake make your own hollandaise. That said, if I hear of the Percy French getting back on track, I will definitely be willing to give them a try, but for now it's a no from us .Visited January 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten January 1, 2022
- Davy M3 contributionsNot greatOnline menu did not reflect the menu when got there. We stood at the door and waited for an age, ignored by the staff until they were ready to seat us. Staff were not rude, but had no personality. We both had fish and chips and it was not great. Would we go back? NoVisited February 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten February 26, 2023
- Karen M14 contributionsDelicious and Dog FriendlyOur food was delicious. My beef was tender and tasty. My husband enjoyed his spicy chicken wings and cold Guinness. We had the cheese cake for dessert and it was also lovely. We were able to dine in the bar area with our little dog. Staff were kind and attentive and provided water for her. Overall, we enjoyed our visit.Visited June 2022Traveled as a coupleWritten June 12, 2022
- karenyvettec20179 contributionsLovely mealLovely meal. I had the steak and my husband had the burger after the garlic mushroom starter. I asked for my steak to be medium/rare but not too bloody and I have to say it was absolutely perfect. A lovely waitress called Ria looked after us. She was pleasant and very helpful about getting my steak right. ThanksVisited September 2020Traveled as a coupleWritten September 28, 2020
- Sam TBangor, United Kingdom87 contributionsDisappointing!!We left this restaurant till our last evening as my husband and I had been before and thoroughly enjoyed the food but we were very disappointed. My son is Coeliac and therefore has to eat gluten free food. We were advised to go for the steak as this was one of the few choices available for Coeliacs (he's only 11). We made the waitress aware that he needed gluten free food but when his meal was bought out there was a great big battered onion ring on the top!! We obviously sent it straight back and were then shocked to see the waiting staff take the onion ring off of his steak and dust the steak down with a view to giving it back to him!! Thankfully someone came to their senses and decided to give him another freshly cooked steak and all was well. We were shocked though when the bill arrived to find that his steak was £28 and we even had to pay for his side order of chips on top of that!! We were not impressed and won't bother coming back again.Visited October 2015Traveled with familyWritten December 18, 2015

£13 for chewy overcooked fish and old cardboard like chips would not encourage me to eat here again. Some quality control clearly required. The stars are for the view but unfortunately it is only for those who are eating.

The location is ideal. We went as a couple and both ordered steak. My wife had a starter and dessert, both of which were very good. One of the steaks I felt had quite a lot of fat and the other didn't. When the waiter asked was the meal ok, an honest answer was given. He said he would mention it to the chef.
I felt the food was overpriced for we got.

Its been a long time since I have been in Percy French, well nice surroundings, went into the restaurant brought to our table by pleasant imformative staff. The staff attentive friendly but not overbearing, we bith had steak and Guinness pie cream potatoes and veg, very tasty and the gravy topped it off. If you happen to be in Newcastle call in for a treat...
