Build back in the late 1800s ,in honour of the duke of Northumberland, this 113 foot Obelisk stands proud ,upon a hill overlooking the city of Armagh ,Northern Ireland......

My review in August 2012 referred to the monument close to the Retreat. It is not on a Golf Course and is situated at the end of a short though steep and uneven walk from a country lane - hence my reference to car parking. It may be necessary to obtain the permission of the landowner to enter their property.... More

This obelisk is unfortunately nothing special, it is situated on Armagh golf course and is basically not officially accessible to the public.

This Obelisk is built on land which is now the golf course. Members of the public are not permitted for insurance purposes. this is something the New Council should look at

Previous reviews refer to obelisk at the Retreat, Hockley near Richhill - different from the one at Knox's Hill in the Demesne

We live in Portadown but only became aware of this monument through reading "On a Clear Day" by Anne Doughty. It is worthy of adequate signposting and a stoned pathway through the field. The owner of the field would surely agree to this. Somewhere to park the car would also be an advantage. Perhaps "The Retreat " would facilitate that.... More
