JR picked me up and dropped me off by my hotel and then proceeded to take me on a 90' tour of the area made infamous by the troubles. All the place names I'd become familiar with as a boy in the 1970s and 1980s on TV and through the papers suddenly came to life. I'd barely been in the taxi 5 minutes when JR slowed and told me we were on the Shankhill Road and this is where the tour begins with the Protestant are to our right and the catholic Falls Road to the left.
JR was magnificent throughout - completely unbiased and willing to explain the history in so much detail.
I don't think I have ever finished a tour of anywhere in the parts of the world I have been to and needed to reflect so much on what I had seen and heard quite so much.
I still cannot believe that aside from there being a Peace Wall in Great Britain and Northern Ireland that there are still gates which need to be closed to separate the Shankhill Road from the Falls Road at 6pm every night to the next morning.
Most of the tour is spent in the taxi but there are a number of opportunities to get out and get closer to certain places. Don't be afraid to ask questions or even just ask for some time to be still in thought for a moment.
I will go back and do it again, to take in all the things I couldn't fully comprehend at the time.
So should you!

Gerard gave a brilliant insight to the history of the IRA, UFF, UVF and other groups formed in Northern Ireland throughout the 60’s,70,80’s and so on. He’s extremely passionate and informative and we came away with personal insights and information not heard before. A class tour from start to finish and wouldn’t hesitate to return. This is an absolute must for anyone travelling to Belfast!

Having previously done the bus tour decided to try the black taxi tour. We were not disappointed. £15 per person and worth every penny. Poddy was fabulous. He gave great commentary throughout and stopped to let us get out and get the feel of the area. Cannot recommend enough. This all happened in my lifetime and the stories I had heard and read about where brought to life. Try it out. You won’t be disappointed.

This tour gave a great insight into what the troubles is. It is a very complicated piece of history to try and grasp but this tour really helped. We were drove around the areas of conflict, shown pictures and props as well, so it was great and we learnt so much! Our guide was called paddy and he was very friendly and happy to answer any questions we had. Overall a very worthwhile experience and will certainly be doing it next time I have a visitor over to NI.

An amazing tour, thank you so much Sean for your excellent tour. We thought we had a wee bit of knowledge of the troubles but Sean was amazing and gave us so much information and his knowledge and expertise in explaining everything to us was five star plus. We would highly recommend Sean for the tour as he has amazing knowledge and is a genuinely lovely person.

The whole thing was absolutely amazing. Our guide Sean Mc was fantastic. He taught us so many interesting things while also incorporating his brilliant sense of humour, which brought a personal touch. We would highly recommend anyone to do this tour and of course ask for Sean as there's no better man!

We arrived in Belfast last Thursday for a long weekend. As it was raining and it seems to do a lot when we were there anyway. We wanted to visit the Shankill Road as most of us remembered the trouble at the time. We had a driver called Cedric and such knowledge he had and obviously had lived through it. Such a good couple of hours history, he took us everywhere and stopped to make we had pictures. What I thought was sad as I hadn’t realised it still went on in today’s era, and surprised the gates still closed early evening. Both religions very proud and patriotic. A must see and only £15 pp

We had our tour yesterday with Brendan, we thoroughly enjoyed every second and Brendan was an excellent guide. So knowledgeable, friendly and a gentleman. We would definelty recommend doing the tour. It took about 1.5 hours and we were picked up from our hotel in the city. The taxi was spotless and comfortable and we learned a lot. Thanks Brendan!

What a fabulous tour. We had never been to Belfast and what an eye opener and simply amazing tour Marty gave us. We would certainly recommend!! Ask for Marty! We will be back to Belfast. This is such a great way to see the history of the city. Thanks again Marty for the stop at Eileen Hickey museum. Everyone needs to stop at this museum!! Amazing!

We had Brian booked via our hotel. His knowledge and information that he gave us on the trip was astonishing. A lovely man who was happy to impart lots of personal stories. Gave us plenty of time to take photos when we stopped around the tour. We were in no rush to finish and the 2 and a quarter hours went so quickly. Sadly it’s difficult hearing that the troubles still continue in a small way. A must when in Belfast.

What are the hours available to book the Belfast political tour?

We went to the visitor's center. They booked it for us by calling the company's dispatch and waited for a return call. They were able to accommodate us at 4:30 pm. You will want to book it no later than that so the driver is able to show you the Peace Wall and the area where you can go through the gates that close in the evening.
Is the tour suitable for children aged 10,12 and 13?
