recommended to visit mid-week and during the day, as CRAZY busy on a saturday night!
The Duke of York is highly recommended as a traditional Irish bar with live music and a friendly atmosphere. There are rooms full of memorabilia and every wall is busily decorated. The drinks on offer are mostly beers and whiskeys. Located in the busiest area in Belfast known as "Cathedral Quarter" so we knew it would be busy when we visited early one saturday night, however we were not prepared for how absolutely jam packed it was!! People were buying drinks and standing out in the alley/small street "Umbrella Street" it was that packed! So you couldn't even walk up Umbrella Street as too many people standing around with drinks, shoulder to shoulder! The Duke of York is notorious and high on the list for tourists to visit, but be warned we couldn't get anywhere near this pub on a weekend night. So we recommended to visit mid-week and during the day if you actually want to get a seat inside, have a drink and a look around and hear yourself think! (yes we are nearly 40 now and like to visit a pub to have a 'conversation' over drinks! haha)

Lovely traditional pub with a great atmosphere and nice drinks
Stopped in for a quick drink and stayed for an afternoon. It was a lovely atmosphere and the drinks were quality. Bit pricey but it is Belfast city centre. The staff were friendly enough and we sat in “the office” which was a lovely private space. Left before any music started but it looks like it would be fun

Amazing atmosphere but couldn’t get to the bar!
Recommended by another local party goer in a nearby bar about 9:30pm on a Saturday night. The street it’s in set the atmosphere - neon umbrellas hanging, neon rain sign arc, live music and people spilling out of the pub - punters dancing and laughing in the street outside of the pub. We attempted to enter the pub but it was jam packed so we chose not to get a drink and soak up the lively atmosphere. We stayed for a few dances in the street then made our way home. NB toilet block is in the building opposite the pub!

    A Belfast Must-Visit
A lively pub with a great atmosphere. We visited for a late afternoon drink, it was sunny and was nice to sit outside in the sunshine, then returned the next evening, which was much busier with live music and a buzzy atmosphere. Highly decorated pub, both inside and outside. Definitely worth a visit if you’re visiting Belfast.

This bar is located down a side street in central Belfast and had the feel very much of a tourist bar and much less of a locals place - while we were there virtually everyone who came in was a tourist. The interior decor is eclectic but also somewhat sterile and the staff, in particular one member, came across as being somewhat shallow. The beer here is certainly city centre prices and it can get very busy with a resulting increase in waiting time. There are a number of benches outside at the side of the street and thankfully a large awning which was very welcome when it started raining while we were sitting out there!

Maybe worth just the one drink to see it, but not really enough craic here for an all evening session.

Maybe my title isn't the fairest of perceptions, as we went on a Saturday evening, and it appeared more suited to a younger crowd.

Very packed, and we struggled to get a seat. Thankfully we eventually did. The pub has a traditional look inside and the array of old advertising mirrors is impressive.

You have the choice of sitting in, if you can get a seat, or going outside to the lit up lane. The bar staff will give you plastic tumblers if you choose to go outside. There is another pub directly facing the Duke, and it helps add to the atmosphere in the street.

There was a singer in the street providing entertainment, but when the sectarian add-ons were audible during Sweet Caroline it was time to depart.

Asked by staff to put on a make and then laughed at by him when you tell him that your mask extent. Then looks at you as if to say ya right when you say again you are extent. Then the mad thing looks at you knowing your looking a drink to turn his back on you and walk away. Not a nice member of staff to laugh at you and then walk away knowing you are looking service. I don't care who this guy is, the owner or just a member of staff he seriously lacked customer service. Ended up getting served by a female member of staff who had a bit more customer service. Sad as this is a bar I like I may not be in it ever night, but still enjoy the nights out here when I do. Will not be back in a here in a hurry or let any travelers know about it as I have done in the past.

Great pub in the heart of Belfast. Interior decor is fantastic. Had a Guinness - wonderful. Live music was playing with the whole pub joining in. We met folk from Australia and Liverpool. Great laugh, great booze and very friendly

First of all….fantastic environment and a great place to soak up some atmosphere and view the Guinness memorabilia. Staff couldn’t really give a toss though and we didn’t have the same experience and other reviews I’ve read. Lots of lovely friend pubs in NI but this ‘famous’ one I think is now just trading on that status. £5 a pint is harsh but I guess ok…but my wife wanted only a half pint and to be charged £3 is just wrong. Pop in for one if you must…but then find a place you can enjoy a longer stay.

A fantastic pub, great live music and super friendly staff. Special thanks to Michael the barman. He made my wife’s birthday celebration extra special by finding us a great table by the band. He also arranged for the band to make a special birthday dedication to my wife. The pub is in a lovely part of Belfast centre. Lots of character and a great crowd.

The range of mirrors and other advertising items from times past is quite breathtaking, but only forms the background to a grand pub, well stocked and featuring excellent and friendly service. The Guinness was good, as was the invite to carry our glasses over to the Dark Horse to view the quite remarkable murals. We'll be back.

Absolutely mint pub, so much history and so many decorations to keep you staring for ages. Great craic with the locals too who told us that Gerry Adams used to work there which may have been why it was once bombed. You wouldn't have known it had been rebuilt so recently, it has great character and charm. Great Guinness, too, of course. A must in Belfast.
