About
The Glynn Vivian Art Gallery reopened in October 2016, following its major redevelopment generously supported by the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government, CADW, HLF and Swansea Council. The project has transformed the Gallery’s original 1911 Grade II* listed building while conserving and celebrating its original character, providing a welcoming, new and refreshed 21st century visitor experience. Following the redevelopment, with additional resources, the Glynn Vivian is aiming to become a centre of excellence for the visual arts a world class gallery for Wales. The Gallery is a vibrant and inspiring free art space for everyone and provides spaces for historical, modern and contemporary art exhibitions, talks, lectures and conferences, live music, performance events and a comfortable and bright café and craft shop area in the heart of Swansea’s bustling artistic quarter.

Visited the Carlos Bunga Exhibition when the artist was present. Beautiful experience!

This gallery is a terrible wast of public money and let's Swansea down.
Sep 2021
The entrance of this publicly funded building was a disgrace to the people of Swansea, weeds and rubbish greet you on the ramp up to the front door. After a year of being closed no one has bothered to even remove the old builders bag of rubbish or pull out the two foot high weeds.
The whole of the ground floor was a joke with a yellow paint poured all over it virtually nothing on the walls .
Upstairs had another " instillation" in the large gallery boxes and a room made of cardboard painted white, this is not art its someone making a lot of money and a fool of the people prepared to pay for it .
There were only 4 people in the whole place at mid day today says it all.

Disappointed that so little of the permanent collection is on show
Jul 2021
I know that this gallery has a fabulous collection and came to view in particular works by Kyffin Williams whose work I discovered during lockdown and Josef Herman, whose massive painting of Miners I wanted to see. I also hoped to see works by Augustus and Gwen John. I only struck lucky with the latter - and found the selection of works on show very disappointing. There were a few things I would have liked to learn more about but the labels for the most part just include name of artist, title, date and medium. The ceramics looked interesting but there was so little information on what each piece was. The only really successful part of this museum was the section on the founder. My kids could not believe it when I got round everything in 45 mins, a record for me.

You have to book in advance at present but the place was practically empty so I am sure you would be allowed in if you had not booked in advance.

Thank you so much for your comments. The Gallery has a Collection of over 11,000 artworks, with ceramics, works and paper and paintings from the original bequest of Richard Glynn Vivian, 20th Century Welsh and contemporary art. We currently deliver over 15 changing exhibitions every year, from originated shows with contemporary artists, touring shows from large international and UK galleries and our own changing collection displays. There are many works that visitors love to see when they visit, but unfortunately, due to conservation and care of these works, they cannot be on display permanently. We do agree that we would like to have much more of the collection on display for visitors to enjoy - during our recent ‘Swansea Stories’ exhibition we had over 300 works on display – and we are looking at ways we can do this in the future. At the time of your visit I do believe that the gallery was in a changeover period, when many of the galleries were being prepared for our current exhibition by international artist Carlos Bunga. We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused you. We do offer a request service, so if there is anything you wish to see in particular, we can arrange this, by appointment only. Please do get in touch with us prior to your visit if this is of interest to you. We also can offer a short guided tour of the ceramics and collection displays if you wish, which can be arranged prior to your visit by contacting the gallery. You can find information on our website about selected works from the collection, but we do know we have some work to do with providing more information to those who wish to find out more about particular works. Visit www.glynnvivian.co.uk/collections/collection-highlights Finally, it is always worth giving us a call before you visit to check what works are on display from the collection, as small parts of these displays change quite frequently depending on the current temporary exhibition. We do hope despite your disappointments, that you enjoyed your visit to Glynn Vivian and you will return again in the future.

The Mary Rose artifacts
Jan 2020
We visited today especially to see the Mary Rose exhibition, what a disappointment, there were 4 cabinets with a few unexciting peices with very poor information .
We viwed the Swansea open exhibition which was very good with some excellent art on display, we then went to look at the people of Swansea paintings which were wonderful pictures by some famous artists such a great chance to see the art that's often hidden

Soaking up some Culture
Oct 2019
This was my first visit and I wasn't disappointed. My friend is much more knowledgable than I am but I was surprised how much I remembered about some of the artists as we oohed and ahed our way round the exhibits. This is a brilliantly varied collection, encompassing different styles and methods. It's a feast of colour and very impressive. Gallery staff are lovely. There's a small shop with great gift ideas. And the cafe offers a variety of meals and snacks. The staff are very sympathetic re dietary requirements and my gluten-free panini was delicious.

Glynn Vivian at Night
May 2019 • Couples
A lovely art gallery and venue in the city centre with a variety of artwork on display for the public. Visited during a 'Glynn Vivian at night' event, which is where the gallery is open in the evening, first time ever, had a great time.
