Description:

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4...

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away from the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you'll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape. It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn - a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all. Penllergare Valley Woods are run and maintained by Penllergare Trust, a small, local charity set-up specifically for this purpose. All the income from our coffee shop and car park goes back into the Trust to help us to maintain and further improve the woods. We also rely on donations, grants and our team of volunteers to continue our work. Coffee Shop Open 10am-4pm daily (except Xmas day) Car Park Open 9am-5pm daily (except Xmas day) - Pay & Display

This is an old garden undergoing refurbishment. There are excellent walks through woodland and open spaces, a lake, Take the dog walking here and both of you will enjoy.

Natural woods, streams, two lakes, waterfalls all lead to hours of meandering in the woods. Follow up with tea and cake at the volunteer-run cafe. Treats for dogs free to canine friends.

lovely to experience a forest environment on my doorstep, apart from the doggers it's a lovely walk in the daytime, clean paths and well preserved ruins.

Thank you for your review, Mark. I'm not sure if you mean doggers or dog walkers, but we don't have any doggers here! Our car park is locked at 5pm each night and the area is covered by CCTV and regularly patrolled by the local police. We do our best to make Penllergare Valley Woods a safe and welcoming place... I had just visited a very sick friend and found this place a place of real tranquillity. children and animals were so welcomed there, dishes of cool water placed for the dogs. You couldn't wish for a better place to visit which wasn't too far out from the city.

Visited here on a sunny!!! day with my husband and 2 sons, we had taken a picnic and after walking around the woods we at by the waterfall and ate our food. Lovely place and safe enough for children on bikes as no vehicles are inside the wood.

So surprised to find this beautiful wooded valley just off jct 47 of the M4! Waterfalls, ponds and riverside walks made for a really enjoyable few hours. There is a lot we didn't get to see as it's huge! There are gentler slopes for those not so able. Wear stout footwear as some places are muddy even after dry weather.... More

We had the most amazing afternoon here - beautiful walk through the woodland. The waterfall was stunning and so tranquil. Followed the river route on the way back - great adventure and got very muddy after an elegant slip in a boggy area. Pride injured only - and was all part of the fun. Lovely cafe was a most welcome... More

Visited the woods with family for the firs time recently and it was lovely. You need a bit of spare change for parking but nothing that breaks the bank. There are lots of different routes and bridges and the waterfall is a must to visit whilst there.
