Description:

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4...

On the northern fringe of the city of Swansea, and within sight of the M4 motorway, lies the estate of Penllergare Valley Woods. Although the names are similar, the village of Penllergaer grew up as a separate entity from the Dillwyn Llewellyn Penllergare estate. Here, deep in the valley, away from the noise and fumes of the passing traffic and encroaching development, you'll find the overgrown but still discernable remnants of an important historic landscape. It is a secret and magical place. A place where you can enjoy the sound of birds, delight in the profusion of wild flowers, discover evidence of exotic plantings and uncover for yourself the hidden features of a grand design. The romantic and picturesque Penllergare was once created for the enjoyment of its creator John Dillwyn Llewelyn - a pioneering mover in science, nature, photography and astronomy in the 19th century. After over half a century of neglect, today it is a place that can be enjoyed and explored by everyone. It is a landscape that is gradually being revived, restored and regenerated by us all. Penllergare Valley Woods are run and maintained by Penllergare Trust, a small, local charity set-up specifically for this purpose. All the income from our coffee shop and car park goes back into the Trust to help us to maintain and further improve the woods. We also rely on donations, grants and our team of volunteers to continue our work. Coffee Shop Open 10am-4pm daily (except Xmas day) Car Park Open 9am-5pm daily (except Xmas day) - Pay & Display

Great place to walk the dog

Always take our dog to the woods, such a great place to spend a Sunday afternoon walking around the lake. Always clean, never seen rubbish around and easy parking

I regularly go to Penllergare Woods for a gentle walk, or sometimes for a few hours, as the woods are so big, you could spend a full day out there if you take a picnic, or there are also a few nearby coffee shops you could get sandwiches and cakes from. The woods are stunning, and are spotlessly clean -... More

Thank you very much for your review. We would recommend visiting our own Coffee Shop, next to the main car park, as it is mainly staffed by volunteers and all proceeds go back to The Penllergare Trust to help us to continue our work in the woods. It is thanks to our team of volunteers that the woods are kept... More

Penllergare Valley Woods is a big area with a network of paths - from the carpark directions are clearly signposted but as we found, it's a good idea to bring a map. I was lucky enough to go there on one of those sunny mid Autumn afternoons which showed the colours of the many trees off to their very best... More

We do have plans to expand our Coffee Shop so that there will be more indoor seating available. Our Coffee Shop and car park are also part of the Penllergare Trust, and all the... More

My wife and I are keen walkers and this area offers a range of walks through wonderful woodland and riverside trails. Not too strenuous but always invigorating. Can get extremely muddy after rain so stout boots recommended.

Thanks for your review, Ed. I am glad you enjoy your visits to Penllergare. We do have a number of surfaced paths for less adventurous walkers to avoid the worst of the mud, but we always recommend stout shoes due to the steep nature of the site. For those new to Penllergare, we have a walker's guide booklet with three... More

Just brought home a bag of PVW's new branded ground coffee and very nice it is too - good strong taste, smooth texture with just that little hint of bitterness that gives it its bite. And it helps a good cause at the same time - win, win; slurp slurp :)

I went to Penllergare Valley Woods with a playscheme this half term. We were welcomed by Lee, Dai and Hedley and were taken on a short tour of the woods with interesting facts. All the children (aged 8-12) were fascinated for a whole 45 minutes and any questions that were asked Dai and Hedley were able to give interesting facts,... More

Thank you very much for your lovely review. Our Estate Team are all very enthusiastic about Penllergare Valley Woods and they are able to pass on this enthusiasm in their talks. We are aiming to further develop the activities we can offer in the woods, but as always this relies on us raising enough funds. More
