Visited on a damper August day - plenty of car parking charged at £3 which felt reasonable as hoping to spend a few hours, I have to say I haven’t visited anywhere quite less dog friendly for a long time.
Dogs can only use one main path which for the first half is just under pylons / industrial view which was awful and although it gets better, the “no entry to dog” signs everywhere else on the paths are just quite off putting.
No poo bins on site, there are signs asking you to take them home with you (I don’t know anyone who would take their poo bags in the car with them) so it means poo being left on the path or people leaving poo bags as not to carry them all the way around and then forgetting them. Dogs not allowed near cafe etc etc.
May as well just refuse dog entries to be honest, the view near the lighthouse was nice but not particularly worth our time with our baby and dog - wouldn’t visit again .

To start with you will be lucky to find this place as the signage from the M4 is not good. It is miles to get there down narrow roads. There is four pounds for parking and two stalls trying to sell you rspb membership between the car park and the cafe. I expected the cafe to be on the river Severn, but it is about 3\4 mile away so only view there is of a small pond and reeds. The coffee and staff were very nice. You have to walk quite a long way to the river and not much to see on the way, heard a wren and saw coots. Better off going down the road to Seawall near Goldcliff and Redwick where there is free parking and a walk on the Severn way on the river bank itself.

Stop harassing visitors on the way in to start a direct debit payment to RSPB. Told lady on the stand we would think about it and she repeated.
Allow dogs to walk in all areas with lead on. After paying parking fee we discovered that dogs are only allowed on a specific dog walk. The way we were told didn’t help at all. We were walking through the centre and we were called out by two people. When the man approached us he sent us off to dog walk with no apology or explanation. When I asked why dogs weren’t allowed he said because of the wildlife. If we were given full explanation and apology we may have felt differently but after the hard sell of RSPB on arrival and then being called out to by multiple people with no proper explanation made us feel unwelcome. Surely dogs on leads should be permitted. Won’t return.

Really disappointed with our visit yesterday. Arrived nice and early with our pooch for what we thought would be a nice stroll finished with a nice coffee stop in the cafe. Asked advice in the visitor centre on arrival for the best dog route although they are far more interested in flogging the RSPB membership. Took the route to the left of the visitor centre which was a complete mud-fest and boring walk until you each the seawall where the views open up and the path is easier to navigate. No dog bins (or any bins) along the 6k walk so we carried our poop bags with us on the route expecting a bin to be at the visitor centre or carpark but nothing to be found. Unable to take dog into visitor centre for cafe facilities and nowhere to sit, the 1 table at the entrance was taken. When paying for parking before we left we pointed out the lack of dog friendly facilities but again not interested, their advice as per the Forestry Commission and Natural Resource Wales was to adopt the "stick and flick" method and not to pick up poop🤢

Beautiful rspb reserve with wonderful cafe and walks… however we signed up to the rspb recently because this reserve is close by and were told it was dog friendly. It really isn’t. There’s one walk that dogs can go on which is 4 miles around the reserve and dogs aren’t allowed in the cafe or shop. There are two tables outside facing the wall where you can have a coffee with the dog but no use if the weathers not great or your are on your own. Really disappointed. I understand some paths being off limits for breeding birds etc but these days with so many cafes dog friendly it seems unreasonable to have no dogs in the cafe. My husbands gutted he’d have liked to take our son and the dog when I work weekends but would be impossible to take them both. Seems like the manager might not be a diff person

Where shall I start.
1) sister and I chatted to 2 girls on entry to check if ok to take dog in cafe, both not sure but thought it would be ok since our dog was in dog pram. We paid £3 for car park which I thought was very good price, the girl was very pleasant and chatty but forgot to give me car park token to leave.
2) asked lad at cafe he said all ok to bring dog in, so we pushed my mum in wheelchair and dog in pram by nearest seating by window, sister and I went back to counter to buy sandwiches/crisps/drinks/cakes, so we spent a bit of money, while doing this saw a lady trying to talk to my mum (who has dementia and cannot talk) she was right in my mums face, so I quickly started walking over, she came to me very quickly and started shouting "you Cannot bring dogs in here", I tried to explain we already asked and was told ok, this women was in mid to late 60's shoulder length wiry greyish hair, I assume was the manager, I was taken aback by the way she spoke to me and can assume she spoke to my mum that way. She said you can sit outside, only seat was a bench by entrance, why don't they have outdoor
seating area!!! We sat on bench and put tray of food on top of dog pram.
3) as we were finishing our food wiry haired women came back out, said not sure if dog walking area will be suitable for wheelchair as steep incline, (sounded as though she wanted us out of the place) we said we would try anyway, we were very polite to her, even though she never once apologised for the way she
spoke to us.
4) felt like wiry haired women was following us because as we walked down ramp she was chatting to the girl who took money for parking. I did notice sign for token to get out of car park, I asked the girl for token, she asked for £3 which I already paid as we entered, told her that, she apologised and gave me token. As we walked away I could see them chatting and both
staring at us. Absolutely terrible way to treat customers. I noticed quite a few reviews about customers being shouted at by staff in cafe.
5) walked around dog friendly area, Absolutely no steep inclines, if we listened to the women we would have gone home. Tut tut. We did enjoy our walk on such a lovely sunny day.
6) serious staff training on how to treat customers, especially the manager!!!

Went there yesterday with two dogs, most unfriendly place. First the car park is £4 after you have driven through the barrier and it is 500 yards each way to get a token to get out. There are no bins, you have to take a dog pooh bag home, they "may attract rats" - what a surprise there may be rats in a nature reserve! Dogs are only allowed on some paths and not in or through the shop/centre. So £4 for a 1000 yard walk to get a token to leave after 15 minutes.

Lovely , peaceful place to wander as far as you want with really good paths everywhere and seating available. Good views over the channel with loads of walk options. They have just built a new kids are with climbing frames etc and it is just brilliant with benches and tables for the adults to chill and watch their kids having a ball.
The staff here are just so friendly and helpful and the cafe is a 'must' to visit, good food and very reasonable prices.
Two gripes, if you have a dog, take their 'deposits' bags home, they don't make good ornaments hanging off trees etc !!
It is £4 to park here which helps with the running etc so why do so many cheapskates park outside on road???? You would pay a lot more than £4 for such a lovely few hours out. Shame on you.

Well, what a waste of time.
I needed a couple of days away from the dazzling delights of Wolverhampton and so, armed with 3 batteries for my camera I grabbed a train. As it happened, there was an incident on the line. No trains running. After having made it to Shrewsbury I then ended up being sent back through Wolves, to Birmingham, then down to Bristol and finally to Newport. 4 hours late.
The RSPB and Newport wetlands site at that you can get to the reserve/estuary/wetlands via the 63 bus I think it was.
What they don't say is, you have to book it a day in advance. They also don't say its pointless ringing for info as assistance is never available. Reception is busy. x20
Come 7am the next day.. I'm thinking .. I can circumnavigate this, I grab the two buses that another website recommended in order to get there. Nope! It then requires an hour plus walk with obviously no way to know if there will be a way to get back come 5pm when the place closes, and the prospect of another 5 mile walk on top of the initial 5 mile walk and the 6 hours walking around the attraction.. no. Not happening.
So.. Return train tickets and two nights in a hotel to photograph bearded tits.. wasted.
I guess I could've just taken a selfie on Newport but.. I'd actually had a shave!
So.. unless you drive or book in advance you can't get there. And the info simply doesn't tell you this on their website. Which means, if you travel here ignorant of these things.. you're not going to be able to get there. And you're going to be really angry about it if it's the only reason you came to Newport!

Nice place to visit if its been dry for a few days. Plenty of parking spaces at £3.00 per day, unless a member. GPS NP182BZ will take you to the correct place but will be a few hundred yards down the same road. . They do have a height restriction over the car park entry , however this can be removed if you call them first. Free parking on side of road outside if space. Dogs welcome on some of the pathways but not all due to the birds. Also no bins in the area so bring your own rubbish bags to take home. Bar with a small selection of cakes but not very big . Lots of sitting space within the restaurant area. Staff helpful but worried about not having a mask even if you are exempt. Little bit of training needed on that. Lighthouse is the main point of the walk. No noise at all but its a shame that its near a huge industrial area .

They do not allow dogs around the reserve for obvious reasons but theres a estuary walk where dogs are allowed a short walk through.

Would you cycle from Newport Station to the Wetlands is it a safe route for a woman to do alone.

Safe yes but quite a long ride! I would guess about 5 miles. You could get a bus from the bus station which is about a 5 min walk from the train station!
