No supervision
May 2017 • Family
Went skating with my family for the first time and we found it quite difficult as there were no hand rails to hold on to . Also there were no supervisors around to help if anyone fell . I had quite a nasty one and only one woman who was also a skater came to my aid and fortunately I was ok . There needs to be someone with first aid knowledge available at all times and I'm surprised in this day and age of safety requirements that this is not carried out !!! Also used the toilets and they were disgusting and hadn't been cleaned and complained straight away . They had been done later but these should have been cleaned before letting the public in !!! We did enjoy our time on the ice but feel these issues need to be addressed .

Planet Ice more interested in profits than customer satisfaction sadly.
Jan 2016 • Couples
I used to enjoy going ice skating in Cardiff, even though it is only a temporary set up.
The ice hockey games are also really good fun to watch...however...

On my recent visit last Sunday we genuinely wanted to leave after 10 minutes of arriving. Having paid full price (which includes hire of very poor skates, you might as well stick saucepans under your feet), we found out that 1/3 of the ice was cordoned off for private lessons. As busy as it was it felt like going around a hamster wheel, while being attacked by push penguins going the opposite direction.

Being a comfortable skater, I genuinely did not enjoy this experience. It felt like a rip off money and at the till none mentioned that only part of the ice is available (while the company is making double profit).

The worst, unfortunately, is the style of management. After the dissatisfaction of 10 minutes on what felt like a warfield, we spoke to the duty manager. Sadly his management skills are just as lacking as his people skills. The company does not operate on a refund policy (after we asked to leave with a refund) with the justification that it is not as busy as "usual". Also, apparently, legally they are only obliged to grant 2m2 of ice per person and the capacity of the ice rink is 700 people. Maths didn't seem his strong point...

We were promised that the ice was being resurfaced soon and that the whole area was made available. The ice did get done after 15 minutes, however, it was cordoned off again. One of the employees was trying to find out why, but the duty manager did not seem capable of managing his duties and remained unseen.

We decided to leave with great disappointment. The company under the management on the day were more concerned about profits than customer satisfaction. It was chaotic and not well managed on the whole.

I am aware that this review seems comical, but hopefully the frustration will shine through. I sincerely hope that the new ice arena, which looks great, will be run under better management.

Till then watching ice hockey it is...

Just ok
Jan 2016 • Family
Came here today with friends and family. First off it is an absolute nightmare to park. I thought I would save myself £1.50 by pre ordering an ice card online. When we got there, I collected my ice card and the tariff was reduced to £9.20 for skate and hire, however, the lady at the kiosk then told me there was a £1 charge to pay on card! I think that's ridiculous!
We went through to the ice rink and queued for our skates. I appreciate they are hire skates but they are in terrible condition!
We then skated until we could skate no more. It was really fun and we did have a good laugh.
The toilets were in an awful state and I didn't go much on the cafe but other than that it was an ok couple of hours.

Fun!

Decent sized rink, comfy skates, good price! You can skate for hours for one price. Not too busy - even on a Saturday and free parking!

Will return!

Great atmosphere for the ice hockey
Dec 2015 • Family
Have visited a few times to watch the Cardiff Devils play and have been struck by the great atmosphere there.

As some have said, it is a temporary structure but the new ice rink is due to open shortly

What is nice is that the ice is opened up for a period of public skating after the match with skat hire being only £2

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback on your visit to Planet Ice Cardiff. We replace at least 20% of our skate hire stock every year. All of our hire skates are routinely checked and repairs are made when faults occur. This includes sharpening blades, relining, fixing buckles and laces, all of which is recorded in a log. Hire skates do get used a lot, especially in a busy venue such as this, but we will always do our upmost to provide a comfortable skate. I hope my comments reassure you and we welcome you back to Planet Ice Cardiff soon.

Everything is average
Oct 2015 • Couples
I love ice skating, and the ice itself is okay, apart from when its overused and melted and and nothing is being done about it, so I would reccommend getting there early.
Quite a pricey rink, with £10 something per person including skate hire you would think they would provide higher iceskate maintainence, most of the skates are worn and ragged on the inside.
Food is pricey aswell and the staff member that served us in the cafè area was appaling.

She was called Sarah I think, dont call me out on that because I cant quite remember, but waiting at the bar for about 5 minutes, she comes and sees me but also sees someone she knows sat at one of the tables, she proceeds to speak to her friend for another 5 minutes before serving her before me, when its my turn she doesnt even say that she's sorry she kept me waiting.

Toilets stink.

Other than the fact the entire building and facilities could do with higher maintainence and/or possibly a revamp. The ice skating session was okay.

Thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback on your visit to Planet Ice Cardiff. Across Planet Ice we replace 20% of skates on an annual basis and carry regular repairs and grinding to ensure all of our skates are maintained to a high standard. All of this is logged so if we do have a pair of skates that break they can be replaced straight away. As you can imagine the hire skates do get used by a lot of people. What you experienced is not acceptable in any of the Planet Ice facilities and all staff members in question will be dealt with as per the company guidelines on such matters. Please be assured, higher management place a huge importance on customer service and following your review, procedures have been changed to ensure this does not happen again. The building is a temporary structure but has exceeded its expected lifespan by quite a few years. We have a regular maintenance program in place and are working to ensure the building is always fit for purpose. Thank you for bringing these issues to our attention and we hope to see you at Planet Ice Cardiff again soon.

T.he Verdict:

We loved it. Ice skating alone is so different. It's just that extra bit more enjoyable over other 'normal' sports.
But ice skating inside the Cardiff Devils stadium is that extra bit more enjoyable again!
It wasn't too crowded considering we visited during the summer holidays.
We rented a penguin stability helper for our little one. He loved that.
There's lots of seating around the rink so you can have a break now and again. All the doors/gates are open so you can sit on the subs benches.

R.ecommendations:

Renting a penguin stability helper, but only half an hour, not an hour. Our little one got fed up and wanted more freedom in front of him after half an hour.

Wear thick socks. You need to have the ice skates tight on your feet for a secure fit, but this results in the plastic digging into your ankles. Thicker socks helps with this pain.

Bring a warm jacket. You'll need it to start off, but as you skate more and more, the jacket will come off. You do get rather hot even though your surrounded by ice. It's also good to have on as it will cushion your fall.

I.mprovement:

Nothing.

P.rice:

We had a deal through Groupon. It was half price for adults and toddlers. So we paid around £12.00 for myself, my wife & my little one. That was for term time skating (unlimited time) with skate hire and a penguin stability helper for 1 hour. It would've been £24.00 altogether without the deal.

Great fun!!!

We came as a family with young children and hired a penguin too. Some of the skates have seen better days but it's all a bit of fun. We had a good couple of hours out of the house laughing and having fun.
