What an amazing little fairytale castle this is! Magical, picturesque, quirky and full of atmosphere. There is nothing ordinary about Castell Coch, and it's easy to see why it's been chosen as a film set for series such as Merlin and Dr Who. There is plenty to enchant both adults and children inside the exquisitely ornate interior, with its murals, gorgeous ceilings, painted and gold furniture. It is truly a feat of the imagination. And from the outside, its conical turrets look certain to contain Sleeping Beauty or Rapunzel. It is set amid woodland and is not a big castle, but absolutely unmissable if you are in the area. There is a cafe - but my cheese and onion toasted sandwich was awful, so not recommended. Otherwise, Castell Coch is fabulous

Although it was written on the website, we were focused on the hours of operation so didn’t realize the castle was closed to visitors. The very narrow, winding road to the castle was eerily like a road you’d encounter in a fairy tale. We parked on the street and walked up the hill through the regular parking lots. We came because Doctor Who TV show shot some scenes here. The castle was marred by the construction equipment. See photos of the impressive outside. Walking trails fan out from the castle site. Maybe someday we’ll be in the neighborhood again...

Dear Dawn You have posted this review to the wrong address. The Castell Coch Tour is operated by a private enterprise which is nothing to do with the Government body operating Castell Coch but which hires the castle for tours offering a deeper insight into the building's history, art/architecture, and personal stories about the Bute family's experiences at the castle than you can get from a casual visit to the site (based on years of research). We were as frustrated as you were that for several weeks we could not get access to the castle because of the scaffolding. However, it is for a very good reason, that serious problems have been discovered with the level of water intrusion to the building. This is a very big project that will hopefully address the problems for the long term. If you make it back I will only be too happy to help you experience this building's story. Best wishes, James Cowan

The visit was a private, guided tour, a present from our daughter. James our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and also very passionate about the castle. He gave us a great deal of historical detail, and very cleverly linked this in with the features of the building itself, both inside and out. The tour seemed to go very quickly, but such was our involvement and interest we only realised at the end that it had taken nearly 2 hours!

We had an excellent (and very knowledgeable - thanks Jim) tour with some overseas visitors. It was fascinating with a colourful history, even for us locals. A very unique place, even in a country full of castles.

An excellent and informative tour given by Jim Cowan. Jim's expert and detailed knowledge of the castle, it's history and the stories of the families and individuals helped bring the whole experience to life. Besides the tour, Jim ensured that as first time visitors to the area, we were looked after in a very caring and practical way. He couldn't have done more to make the morning a very enjoyable experience. Thank you.
