A470 Llandudno to Cardiff
Oct 2021 • Couples
The A470 should be experienced when you have time on your hands mainly outside of rush hour and holiday periods. What you get is a fantastic tour of rural Wales and beautiful scenery. There are many places to stop and enjoy but please remember this is a working road and people have to use it. If you see traffic building up behind you and nothing in front of you pull over to let others get on with their day.

Another holiday in Wales driving on the A470
Aug 2020
Good North-South central Wales road from Cardiff to Conwy.
Drover on several sections of the road on our Welsh holiday - again!!!
Well maintained - though very few overtaking places once into the mountains - so you can be stuck behind tractors and motorhomes for a while!
Gets you to where you are going!

Gets me away from DIY
Jul 2020 • Friends
I like this road a lot. Every Sunday me and an old school friend, Kev, make our way to the Brecon Beacons on our motorcycles. He doesn’t like it, he’s a bit of a fart at times as he says “we always go there”.

Personally I think it’s a marvellous piece of road. There’s a mix of dual carriage way and some country road with lots of twists and turns. There’s even a burger bar just after that Penny van mountain place.

You can follow it right up to North wales apparently, though I’ve yet to make it that far.

Usually I’ve to turn back half way because the wife will phone and inform me that the dog needs walking or that one of the kids has smashed their phone screen again. Seriously, the amount of times I’ve had to fix them bloody things recently is getting beyond a joke.

One day I’ll smash my phone before leaving and explore more of this magnificent example of civil engineering!

A Good Road, To Be Avoided At Rush Hours
Feb 2020
The 'fast' road north out of Cardiff. It's very good at normal times of the day, but during the morning and evening rush hour, don't expect to get anywhere quickly. A lot of the towns to the north of Cardiff are now basically dormitory towns, with the people working in Cardiff and returning to Pontypridd, or elsewhere in the evening. If you're a tourist and want to get to the M4 motorway, or the area north of the city, it's good, as long as you avoid the rush hours.

Excellent tarmac
Feb 2020 • Solo
I recently had the pleasure of driving on the A470, what an amazing road! I was looking forward to it all day and as I approached this epic road the excitement almost got too much. As I turned left from Whitchurch and headed up towards Pontypridd the jubilation finally hit, throws of joys came down on me and I burst into tears, I had finally made it. Everything I had dreamt about was finally beneath me, the tarmac, the straight white lines, the 50 mile an hour speed limit and to top it all off I saw a dead hedgehog in the hard shoulder.
Will be returning again next year for a family holiday.

Nightmare
Feb 2020 • Couples
The early morning ride to my son's house in Cardiff to babysit is always a nightmare ride with cars nose to tail most of the way from Abercynon roundabout down and I noticed most cars just have one occupant who I'm sure would take the train if the rail service was better with more carriages, cheaper fares and more frequent train times.

Good main road

As a road its in good order and is a link between southern Wales and parts of North Wales. We used it to get into Cardiff from Monmouth.

It’s a road

Use this every time we visit Cardiff. Generally a clear run. Busy at rush hour as expected. But a good road.

A470 every time
Aug 2017 • Family
We use this road to go to Cardiff, rather than using the M4 motorway. It's quieter, and less stressful.
We join the A470 in Libanus and go over the Brecon Beacons towards Merthyr Tydfil where the road becomes a dual carriageway to the capital city.

Long journey from Cardiff to Llandudno.
Jul 2017
Easy to navigate, plenty places to stop for a break, would be a bit slow when busy but was ok in the afternoon when we travelled. A bit curvy in places but being from Scotland it was pretty good to us.
