The fortress sprawls over a huge area making it the largest castle in Wales. Like the famous cheese, the castle has long been synonymous with Caerphilly. It dominates. Hogs the limelight. Think slumbering giant awaiting a call to arms. It's also a great backdrop for TV and film. It secured a starring role recently in the popular BBC TV series Merlin.

This is a great place to visit, plenty of things to see if you are an older person, and plenty of things to climb over if you have younger kids. Lots of information is available about this very old castle, and the people who built and lived in it.

We took the short train ride from Cardiff. 10 min walk from train station to Castle down the main street of the town. Castle is enormous. Loved that it was almost all open to view. You get a real feel of what it was like to live in a Castle. Good display of Medieval weapons that the children will enjoy.... More

Nice sunny day, we spent 2 hours in the castle and we visited all. We have a 5 year old with us. There was a sort of clue/hunt available for children, so we did it. It is a bit difficult to understand were the clues are located, looking at the map provided. However we managed to finish it. It would... More

This concentric castle, which was constructed in the 13th century, is remarkably well preserved. It is huge, the 2nd largest castle in Britain, and was constructed by Gilbert de Clare as part of this campaign to conquer the area. You can walk around the exterior of the castle and take photos for free or pay the small entrance fee to... More

A terrific day out - we went to see 'the dragon'. Good value entrance fee. We loved visit - very young children may not appreciate it though and want to leave before you're ready! I would suggest a visit on a sunny day and take a picnic to enjoy the beautiful grounds.

Just worth the visit to see the castle from any angle - we started with the rear viewing it from the island and then walked around to the town centre to see the leaning tower. It is graceful, dramatic and dynamic.

Lovely place to visit. The castle is very interesting and impressive. It is also very affordable at £6 for an adult. There is lots of cool things to read about and they have the dragon there at the moment. There is also a small town that you can buy lunch or have a nice cup of tea.

The castle is so great and in good condition, surronded by a moat. Beautiful view from the walls and romantic mediaeval atmospher. We were with our 14-month-old daughter but it was not ideal because we could not take the pram on the windig staircase to the walls...:)) ( this is not the fault of the staircase),,, but we like castles... We called in here after a visit to nearby Castell Coch. Caerphilly castle is very impressive, very large with surrounding lakes, it occupies a vast site in the centre of Caerphilly. It is well worth the entrance fee, but we were disappointed by the lack of information. You can go from room to room with very little or nothing to... More
